ST MICHAEL'S CHURCH RENDHAM CHURCHWARDENS' REPORT
We are awaiting a firm date from the contractors for work to begin on the Church Path.
We would be very grateful for volunteers to help with cleaning the church on a regular basis.
If you can help, please ring 664021.
Songs of Spring was the title of a truly unforgettable concert which took place in St Michael’s
Church on the afternoon of 23rd April. It was given in memory of Bonnie May, the infant daughter of
James and Emma Strachan, and they welcomed their many friends with their children, who completely
filled the church. From the first song ‘Somewhere over the Rainbow’ to the concluding ‘Flower Duet’,
the singers, the guitarist and the accompanist gave of their very best, and the storms of applause
showed how much the audience appreciated their skill. Karen Burgess spoke about the work of the
Petals Charity, which provides support for those undergoing a similar trauma or loss, and generous
donations were made at the conclusion of the event.
We would like to thank you for your support and donations at Songs of Spring
in memory of Bonnie May, a delightful day, raising £1000.75 for Petals Charity.
An event we hope to continue, Emma, James and Percy Strachan.
OBITUARY
Roy Tilbrook 1925 – 2016
The funeral of Roy Tilbrook, one of the longest residents of Rendham,
took place on 11 April 2016. Roy’s father and grandfather had been
gamekeepers and Roy shared their enthusiasm. He was never happier
than being out with his father and rarely missed a good shot. This early
field craft stood him in good stead for what he was about to encounter
in the war. Prospects for work on the land were poor, so Roy joined
the army at 14. He enlisted in the 2nd Paras and at the age of 18 was
fighting in France. Whilst on patrol in the French village of Escoville,
a German soldier came out of a house with a white flag - but was
followed by more behind with machine guns. He named his house after the village from
which he said he should never have returned. After the war, Roy worked as a carpenter
and eventually set up his own business as a builder. He was responsible for the
construction of the Control Tower at Bentwaters and was very proud to have constructed
the roof of Snape concert hall not once but twice, after a fire destroyed the original. In
1947, Roy married Joan, an ex-Land Girl, and they had 5 children, Sandra, Michael,
Christopher, Linda and Robin, moving to Rendham with their growing family in 1951.
Roy was very active in the village: he was Parish Council chairman, a Founder Member
of the ACC, and he was instrumental in the Village Hall restoration some 40 years ago.
For many years he presented the wreath at the annual Remembrance service. He was
a keen cribbage player and continued his interest in game-keeping. He loved his
Labradors, his garden and his koi carp pond. After losing his lifetime soulmate and
beloved wife, Joan, and as he became frailer, Roy coped pretty well on his own, but
was greatly helped by Pat and Dave Barker towards the end of his life. He is buried next
to Joan in Rendham churchyard. At the funeral, the Royal British Legion lowered the
flag over the coffin and played the Last Post.
(With thanks to Jonathan Olanczuk)
A WARM WELCOME
to Alex & Heather Ward and family who will
soon be moving into Grove House Farm,
and FAREWELL after many years, first
in Sweffling and then in Rendham, to
David and Tricia Gaunt.

RENDHAM PARISH COUNCIL NEWSLETTER
LOCK UP YOUR HOUSES & OUTBUILDINGS WHEN YOU’RE NOT AT HOME, especially on Fete day!
Parish Meeting
Every year a meeting for the Parish is held where reports are received from the various
bodies within the village. Updates for activities or progress are given. Reports received from
the Village Hall, ACC, PCC, Town Charity, PARK, Rendham Website & Suffolk County Councillor
Stephen Burroughes.
Parish Council Chairman Matthew Greenburgh reported that there were 5 meetings of the
council during the year. In future, as decided at the January Council meeting, there will only be
4 meetings a year, January, May, September & November. John Carrington was thanked for
carrying out the independent review of the accounts before being sent to the External Auditors.
Again the precept was held at £2,200.
A full copy of the reports is in the Minutes & posted on the Village website. The Annual
Parish & the 4-monthly meetings are for everyone to come to hear what is happening in the
village & are an opportunity for them to have their voice heard on matters of local interest – it
would be great if more Rendhamites were to attend future meetings….
Next Parish Council meetings 7.30pm RVH

Parish Council Meeting
New Parish Councillor Richard Field was co-opted to the Parish Council. This means that

as a through route by many in the Village.

RENDHAM ENTERTAINMENTS: Comedy Evening in Rendham
There was a completely full house for the delightful evening in April, when the Comedians
Stephen Bayfield and Peter Holloway performed a series of extremely funny sketches,
mainly as the classic Suffolk couple,' Ted and Lil'. They are a real joy, and not only are
they amusing, they are spot on as observers of domestic life in all its quirkiness! Everyone
had a really good time, with the added bonus of a delicious hot dinner, cooked by the
brilliant Frances and Anne and served by the Rendham Entertainments team and their
spouses. Thanks to all those involved with organising such a successful event - especially
Albert Lain, whose work contacting guests is invaluable, as is his supervising the new
sound system - a huge bonus on such occasions - the whole act being completely audible
to all. Thanks to all who came and supported us - we made a healthy profit towards the
hearing loop of £360.
Rendham Entertainments are looking for another volunteer to join their informal committee
-someone with secretarial ability would be very welcome!
Please make a note that the next effort by the group will be a Breakfast Walk in September,
the exact date to be announced later in the Summer.
The preparation for this year’s fete is well underway. The arena attractions
include Sheep Dog Display, Children’s entertainer, Shire Horses, old and new
tractors, Classic Cars, Formula One car, Mummers Play, Children's races and a
Tug of War competition.
We have BBQ, Beer and Tea tents, Ice Cream,
Jazz music, Fairground Organ and lots of other stalls.
We are always looking for new ideas and villagers to
join in the day and for more information please contact
Malcolm Coulson on 663434.
Please support this important annual village event
which provides a vital source of income for the Church
and Village Hall and allocates 15% of the money raised
to the Village Amenity Fund.

RINGING NEWS
It has been said that there are only ever winners and losers. At striking competitions though,
I feel all the contestants are winners, with the pursuit of perfection leading to the event raising
everyone’s game. Historically, ringing competitions were a little raucous with betting and
drinking and…well it wasn’t like that at Wissett for the District Competition (although there were
meringues for tea), it was companionable though and our band brought home two trophies.
We won the call changes and were next best in method, after Halesworth. The Guild contest
at Reydon was more of a challenge and we didn’t come home with any silver. We did enjoy
meeting old friends though and hearing some superb ringing as well, so our time was well
spent.
The competitions are over in Suffolk, but there is a National Youth contest, in London this
year on July 2; our own Richard has been selected for the Suffolk team. Wish him (and Suffolk)
well, and think of us whilst enjoying Rendham Fete.

RENDHAM VILLAGE HALL 2015 - 2016 - CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Rendham Village Hall has continued to be used by its regular users for Pilates, Bingo, Art
Classes & various village meetings & fundraising events. The “Soup & Pud” lunches have continued
to be very popular, providing not only a good value meal but an opportunity for the community to
socialise. The hall has also been hired for a range of private family events & celebrations.
Damp rectification work was completed in late autumn by clearing soil from the north &
east walls and fitting air bricks to improve the air flow under the floor. The VHMC are keen to see
the progression of the new church path, as the path has become very uneven which makes
wheelchair access difficult. The committee agreed a donation towards the path for which the PCC
were most appreciative. Rendham Entertainments have been raising funds for sound & vision
equipment. Audio equipment has been purchased & used successfully for recent events.
Discussions are now underway about a much-needed hearing loop. The VHMC are most grateful
for the fund raising events organised by RE.
During the year we welcomed Geoffrey Boult and Jenny Thomas to the committee. We
were also delighted when Jean Palmer agreed to take over the Treasurer’s role.
THE CAR PARK Although notices have been sent around the village raising the awareness
of the car parking issues in the hall there are still a number of cars using the car park outside of
hall events. This is causing concerns for the regular hirers. As previously stated, the regular hirers’
income is of critical importance to the continued viability of the hall so it is hoped people will be
understanding and park elsewhere. We must emphasise that hall is not only used by the regular
hirers but is the only public space in the village for meetings, Church and Fete events as well as
providing a place for our polling station. As a thriving village we really do not want to lose this
important asset through lack of income.
The Village Hall received a very welcome contribution from the proceeds of the 2015
Rendham Fete; every year this helps to ensure that the hall remains financially stable.
