Music Notes
For the first half of the year, all students will be working on
a Christmas performance "The Twelve Days of Joyous
Instruments". It's a twist to the original song "The Twelve
Days of Christmas". The students will learn to play a
variety of instruments that have interesting names such as
Crashee Klangers, Janglereenz, Chooka Chookas, and
nine others. I am looking forward to a great musical
year!!! Mrs. Jennifer

Personal Invitations
Please be conscientious when sending birthday
invitations with your student to academy. Including
the majority and excluding one, or a few, can cause
very big hurts to a little one’s heart. Let’s be kind,
compassionate, & loving to everyone; otherwise

September Ancient History
Additional Ancient History activities & reading for
1st-8th graders. Time doesn’t allow us to
accomplish all of this in class, but try them at home
if you’re interested! Mrs. Alina
Week 1
Introduction- How do we know what
happened?
This Week we will be learning what History and
Archaeology are. We will also be learning about how
we can piece together what may have happened in
the past by what people have left behind.
Home Connection:
Backyard Archaeology Dig:
http://www.education.com/activity/article/backyar
d-archaeology/
Week 2 Chapter 1 The Earliest People
This week we will be studying about the first nomads.
What food they ate, where they slept, and how they
became farmers. We will also be learning about the
Fertile Crescent, Mesopotamia, and the Tiger and
Euphrates rivers.
Home Connection:
Make a Cave Painting
Materials: Brown paper bag, Acrylic paints in black,
beige, and reddish brown, thick paint brush
Directions: Cut the paper bag open so that you have a
large surface area to paint on. Next crumble the
paper and then smooth it flat. This is to add
irregularities to the painting surface to simulate
painting on a cave wall. To simulate the charcoal used
by prehistoric man to draw pictures, use the black
paint and draw a simple outline of an animal. Draw
the animal’s most obvious feature (tusk, antlers etc.)
in an exaggerated way. You can also add several stick
figures carrying spears to depict a hunt. After the
animal outlines have dried, use the beige paint to fill
in the design. Next use the reddish brown paint to
add highlights. This color represents the red-ochre
used by early man. Let the entire piece dry
completely.
Week 3
Chapter 2- Egyptians Live On
the Nile River
This week we will be learning
about Egypt and the Nile River
and where they are located. We
will also be learning about the
Egyptian people, how they ruled
and some of their beliefs.
Home Connection:
Make a Model of the Nile River
Materials: Grass seed, potting soil, rocks and pebbles,
large waterproof pan(like an aluminum roasting
pan), tin foil and water
Directions: 1. Fill the container 2/3 full with soil. 2.
Push the soil away from the area of the Nile River to
make a riverbed. Look at a map to see what the shape
of the Nile River should be. It should run through the
center of the container, just as the Nile River runs
through the center of Egypt. Don’t forget to make
your triangle or Y shape at one end, where the delta
is located. 3. Using a double layer of aluminum foil,
line the riverbed. Ensure the foil is long enough to
reach over the top of the container at each end,
otherwise your river might drain into the
surrounding soil. To make the Y shape of the delta,
just cut the foil into the same shape and mold into the
riverbed you created in step two. 4. Spread some
pebbles into the river to weigh down the foil. 5.
Sprinkle grass seed along the bank of the Nile. 6.
Place some larger rocks along the right side of the
container, to imitate the mountains in ancient Egypt.
7. Fill the river with water, letting it flood over the
banks to water the seeds. This is the first method of
watering crops. 8. Each week, water your model by
flooding the Nile. 9. For added realism, you can add
clay replicas of the pyramids and place them on your
model. Get creative... you could add grass, boats, and
animals as well.
