Aurora - Fire in the Sky on Wednesday, February 1, at 10:00 p.m., examines legends about the origins and meaning of the colorful glow that often brightens the night sky in Earth’s polar regions. One of the most incredible natural phenomena in the world, the array of colors of the aurora is a source of endless theory and wonder. What creates such beauty and spectacle? Finland’s Saami, Alaska’s Inuit, Canada’s Native Americans and New Zealand’s Maori, each have legends of their own. The film blends scientific research and myth to share the aweinspiring mystery of the aurora. (Photo: Stephen Voss.) City in the Sky, airing Wednesdays, February 8-22, at 10:00 p.m., explores a unique metropolis, a midair “city” composed of nearly a million people on flights that crisscross the world daily. The series examines just what it takes to keep the “city in the sky” functioning and safe between take-off and landing. It covers the building of the world’s biggest passenger plane and controlling the flow of passengers through the busiest airport on the planet. It also reveals the hidden army of people, complex global networks and astonishing technology that control 100,000 flights a day and why flying has become safer than ever. Ruby Ridge on Tuesday, February 14, at 9:00 p.m., examines the 1992 FBI siege that helped launch the modern militia movement. The film provides a riveting account of the deadly confrontation at Randy Weaver’s secluded home in Idaho 25 years ago. “Ruby Ridge explores the longstanding debate over individual rights and the responsibilities of government,” said Mark Samels, American Experience executive producer. “What is the relationship between a citizen and the government? When does the government perceive a threat, and when do they overreach? What are the limits of personal freedom? These fundamental questions are at the heart of the events that happened at Ruby Ridge and are still being asked today.” (Photo: Dave Hunt.) Our Super Thursday one-day radio membership campaign returns on Thursday, February 9, and we are counting on all of our listeners (and viewers!) to help Maine Public reach our fundraising goals that keep all the programming you enjoy coming to you 24/7. In the past, we would fundraise for an entire week or more at a time – not so anymore! Not only are there fewer schedule interruptions, but shorter campaigns also mean lower overhead expenses, so we are using your pledge dollars even more effectively. Please call 1-800-866-1475 or visit mainepublic.org on Thursday, February 9, and make a pledge to show your radio and Maine Public a little love. Thank You! I Morning Classical’s February As You Like It! As winter’s chill holds New England in its icy grip, a little musical warmth comes to mind. Sergei Prokofiev’s Winter Bonfire is about a group of children from Moscow on an outing in the snow. Conni Ellisor’s Blackberry Winter is a concerto for Tennessee music box and mountain dulcimer. To share your opinion on these selections, e-mail us at [email protected] or leave a message at 207-330-4551. Tune in on February 3 during Morning Classical Music to hear the winning piece! I We are ready to take the wheel! If that dear car that has survived blizzards and searing heat, excited dogs and crazy cats, kids perhaps, and maybe a move or two just doesn’t have any more to give you, then perhaps it’s time to give your old love to your other loves – Maine Public Radio and Maine Public Television! You can turn your old love into programs that make your heart sing like Morning Classical Music, Masterpiece, Fresh Air or Charlie Rose… Please call 1-855-277-2346 to see if your vehicle qualifies. We’ll tow your car at no cost, and you’ll receive a tax receipt, a Maine Public MemberCard with discounted benefits and access to Passport, the PBS online streaming library. What a great deal for you and for your other love – Maine Public! I THANK YOU Jessica of Sebec again for donating your 2006 Subaru Outback to Maine Public! Your generosity is very much appreciated. To make a vehicle donation, please call 1-855-277-2346. Maine Public is bringing you more of the great kids’ programs and educational content that your family loves! Now you can catch all your favorite kids’ shows like Wild Kratts, Arthur and Bob the Builder all day, every day, 24/7 on the new PBS Kids channel on Maine Public. We believe that the educational value of PBS Kids’ programming and providing greater accessibility to it, is incredibly important given the viewing options available to families from other media. PBS Kids’ programming is programming you can trust! The PBS Kids channel joins our main channel (Maine Public Television), the Create channel and the World channel for free over-the-air reception by antenna across Maine. The new channel is also available over many cable partners. Look at the viewing grid on Page 4 of this issue of Experience. For those of you set in a routine of watching PBS Kids on our main channel, that schedule and lineup remains the same. I Appalachia n Trail Hikers Wanted! Income you can count on Maine Public is starting a search across Maine for two individuals planning to hike the Appalachian Trail together from Georgia to Maine in 2017. We are calling the initiative “Here to There and Back.” Along their journey, the hikers will remain connected and engaged with all that is Maine using our crazy-good Maine Public App. This is not a test of the app itself, but rather an opportunity to integrate this amazing outdoor experience with our newest digital offering. The selected hikers will report on their experiences and, in small part, how the Maine Public App has helped them remain connected to Maine, providing blog posts, audio diaries and other content back to the state. While officially on their own, our intrepid hikers will be provided with gear and resources from folks like Garmin to help defray the costs of their experience. So how does one get chosen? Selection criteria will be based largely on how the aspiring Maine Public hikers believe their trek can be leveraged to improve or contribute in some way to the greater Maine community. It’s a big journey that requires an equally large purpose. The sponsor of “Here to There and Back,” Goodwin Motor Group and their Land Rover lineup, will help in the selection of the winning team. Interested? Know someone planning to take on the AT in 2017? More information is available on mainepublic.org under our Events tab. I A moose, a hero, and a viral sensation! Over the past holiday, our own Jeff Mahaney, a transmission manager here at Maine Public, spied a large bull moose on a camera feed that was monitoring one of the station’s many towers. Animal life around our remote facilities is not unusual, but this time the moose appeared on camera over multiple days. Jeff knew that something was wrong. He drove two hours to the location, donned his snowshoes and walked off-road to the tower site and discovered that the moose was tangled in abandoned telephone lines. A call to the state wildlife agency resulted in the moose being tranquilized and freed from the wires. Jeff, pictured here with the moose, reports that the moose woke up and “groggily looks at us and wanders off.” A video of the rescue has been heavily shared over social media and has enjoyed some incredible viewing numbers. Great job, Jeff! I and support for the programs you love. Enjoy great returns with a charitable gift annuity. The Millennial Dream Thursday, February 23, 10:00 pm; Saturday, February 25, 11:00 am What should our audience be on the lookout for when watching? Continue to ask yourself as you watch this film, how does this relate to me, my community, my career, my buying habits and my education? How do we stay relevant in the new economy? Is there anything I can do to help my community make the transition into the new economy? What were some of the challenges of the film’s production? The biggest challenge, hands down, was deciding on the topics. The American Dream is such a huge topic, and the values that are replacing the American Dream are incredibly complex. We boiled it down to five topics, but it took us many months to figure out that this film should not present answers, but rather inspire and empower people to make the transition gracefully into the new economy. Experience caught up with the team behind this month’s featured Maine Public Community Film, The Millennial Dream. What was the inspiration for undertaking the film? We (the filmmakers) live in, and operate out of, a small industrial corner of Canada called New Brunswick. The province is experiencing a serious out-migration of young people which has resulted in a sort of “brain drain” of young talent and energy from the region. We wanted to produce a film that helped New Brunswickers (and the world) think differently about the assets and the liabilities their region has in today’s rapidly changing world. We love our home, we understand the changing world view and value set as we enter the new economy. We want to help people think differently about what their communities, educational institutions, companies and market look like as we create the new American Dream... the Millennial Dream. 8 Experience February 2017 What surprised you about the film that you hadn’t anticipated? The biggest surprise for us was revealed when we toured it across Canada and the USA. We thought New Brunswick was unique in its challenges vs. pride of place... but it is everywhere. People care about home, they care about the sustainability of their communities, they care about a healthy future for their kids and grandkids. The surprise to us is that the film was not the strongest tool of impact, it was the dialogue that came out after every screening. What projects lie ahead? Our latest project that we are starting to pitch is called “Grey Wave.” We want to look at the positive angle of the aging Baby Boomer demographic! I Airing This Month! .
