Dear Friends, Once again, we are delighted to invite you, along with other long-time friends and supporters of Asolo Rep, to spend seven luxurious days and nights aboard the award-winning Crystal Symphony. J oin Asolo Rep on this extraordinary adventure to travel in the footsteps of history, from Berlin to Amsterdam, where you will explore some of Europe’s most influential cities, along with medieval castles and quaint towns, all as you experience six-star luxury aboard the Crystal Symphony. Together with Asolo Rep’s like-minded theatre buffs, we’ll travel Northern Europe through the North Sea, from Berlin to Amsterdam, all while sailing on the cruise line heralded as the “World’s Best Large-Ship Cruise Line” by the readers of Travel + Leisure magazine for 21 consecutive years. Our ports of call are among the most beautiful and influential cities in the world: from Hamburg, with its stately parks, gardens, and streets imbued with WWII history, we gain access to Berlin, situated to the southeast, and offering important sites such as the Brandenburg Gate and remnants of the Berlin Wall. From there, we travel to Kristiansund on the southern tip of Norway, a top vacationers’ destination. We’ll then visit Scotland’s celebrated capital of Edinburgh, dominated by a medieval castle, other architectural masterpieces, and boasting a thousand years of history. In Newcastle upon Tyne, we will see some of England’s loveliest scenery, the ruins of Hadrian’s Wall, and Grainger Town, the beautiful and historic heart of the city. We end our journey together in Amsterdam, with its quaint architectural styles, priceless art treasures, and a wealth of fascinating sightseeing opportunities. Just prior to the journey, we’ll offer a pre-cruise tour option in Berlin and Hamburg to enjoy unique experiences, specially designed for our group. And during our voyage we’ll set aside time to hear from our distinguished speakers, who will lead us through stimulating discussions about the world of theatre and the arts, and share their vision of Asolo Rep’s future. These sessions will be a collective, collaborative experience, where your presence and participation will complete the picture. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit extraordinary places, expand our minds, and build and deepen lifelong bonds with our fellow Asolo Rep friends. Please read on and do plan to join us for a fun and relaxing journey in July 2016. Michael Donald Edwards Producing Artistic Director BERLIN/HAMBURG, GERMANY KRISTIANSUND, NORWAY SATURDAY-SUNDAY, JULY 2-3 MONDAY, JULY 4 Docking in Hamburg, you will be introduced to Germany’s second-largest city and biggest port, with all the confidence and vivacity to match. A key player in the Hanseatic League and perpetual magnet for maritime activities, Hamburg is one of Europe’s most affluent cities, drawing media, publishing and financial enterprises to its waterside locale. Significant architecture, waterways crisscrossed by myriad bridges (more than London, Amsterdam and Venice combined), stately parks and gardens, and streets imbued with WWII history make Hamburg a fine destination for art and history buffs. Hamburg also lives up to its moniker, “Gateway to the World,” especially as it relates to Berlin, situated 180 miles to the southeast. Decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the German capital is vibrant with a sense of purpose and packed with important sights. The Reichstag Parliament, Checkpoint Charlie, the Brandenburg Gate and remnants of the disassembled Wall are highlights of any Berlin experience. Kristiansund’s water-surrounded setting, many parks and museums, family-friendly zoo and vibrant shopping scene bring culture-minded visitors and outdoors enthusiasts together in happy coexistence. A walk in Posebyen, Kristiansund’s old town, offers a look at one of Northern Europe’s largest collections of characteristic wooden buildings, while the fish quay presents one of Norway’s best fish markets and great dining options. Enjoy EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND TUESDAY-WEDNESDAY, JULY 5-6 Dominated by a medieval castle on a towering crag, Edinburgh is the celebrated capital of Scotland and boasts more than a thousand years of vibrant historical heritage. The Exchange Building, the famous Royal Mile featuring St. Giles Cathedral, and the John Knox House, as well as the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the Queen’s official residence, are only a few of the architectural masterpieces found in this delightful Scottish city. MYRIAD OPPORTUNITIES TO MINGLE WITH SPEAKERS AND NETWORK WITH FRIENDS OF ASOLO REP SEMINARS-AT-SEA WELCOME ABOARD RECEPTION Join your distinguished roster of speakers and other like-minded Asolo Rep cruisers for cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and stimulating conversation as our incredible journey begins. In addition to enjoying countless shipboard activities and amenities, we’ll take time to hear from our hand-picked group of theatrical experts, who will lead us through thought-provoking seminars about the inner workings of world-class theatre. You will gain insights from some of theatre’s renowned artists, and exchange ideas and experiences with your fellow cruisers, who all share a passion for Asolo Rep and the arts. NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE, ENGLAND AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS THURSDAY, JULY 7 FRIDAY-SATURDAY, JULY 8-9 Formerly a coal town, Newcastle Upon Tyne is today a hip and trendy destination, reinventing itself after the heady days of full-steam-ahead industrialization screeched to the near standstill of recession. “Geordies,” as the locals are known, give Newcastle a distinct character—and a practically indecipherable dialect. The tough life of the Geordies has imbued in them, somewhat surprisingly, the gift of optimism, and one they share willingly and generously. The people are one wonderful draw of the area; another is the Northumberland coast and the Pennine Hills, home to some of England’s loveliest scenery and the ruins of Hadrian’s Wall. For all the appeal of the land, you may find it hard to leave the city, with its famed suspended-deck Tyne Bridge, graceful Victorian Central Arcade and charming Grainger Town, the beautiful and historic heart of the city. Amsterdam derives its name from a 13th-century protective dam. It is a beautifully preserved city with quaint architectural styles, priceless art treasures, and welcoming people. Many of its wondrous highlights are located within the five concentric canals that gird the city’s older neighborhoods and business districts. Whether cruising its waterways or visiting its exquisite galleries and museums, you will discover a wealth of fascinating sightseeing opportunities. A short drive away, characteristic towns preserve their traditional Dutch ways with intricate national costumes, sturdy wooden shoes, and purposeful windmills. HOSTED DINNERS Spend a leisurely dinner engaged in delightful dialogue as our speakers host dinners and provide yet another opportunity for us all to get to know one another better and exchange ideas. FAREWELL RECEPTION Celebrate the experience, the new knowledge, and the new friends you have gained at this farewell gettogether. Mingle with your expert presenters and share opinions. Enjoy the fellowship of like-minded theatre enthusiasts, share your cruise experiences, and say goodbye to new and old friends...until next time!
