General Course Information
New Jersey defensive driving courses are governed and approved by the New Jersey
Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC). The MVC has implemented defensive driving
programs to keep New Jersey roadways safe and to ensure that drivers in the state of
New Jersey are afforded an opportunity to reduce the likelihood of being involved in a
motor vehicle accident. Drivers may choose to take the course in a classroom setting or
online.
Benefits of Completing a New Jersey Defensive Driving Course
The benefits of completing a defensive driving course in New Jersey are:

2 points being removed from a driver’s license. The MVC will only accept courses
offered by approved agencies and a driver must already have at least 2 points of
their driver’s license. The New Jersey defensive driving course may only be
completed once every five (5) years for point reduction.

Insurance reduction. You may qualify for an insurance reduction. You should
contact your insurance company or agent for further information on the amount of
discount provided.
