Catalog Course Description:
Designed to augment the knowledge of the student who has limited background in algebra: fundamental
operations, special products and factors, functions and fractional equations, exponents, radicals,
quadratic equations.
Prerequisite Course(s) Required:
Math 020 with a grade of C or higher or placement exam.
Required Materials:
Text: Intermediate Algebra 4th Edition by Rockswold and Krieger
Methods of Evaluation:
Homework Assignments: 10%
3 Online Quizzes: 25%
2 Paper Tests: 40%
1 Paper Final: 25%
Grading System:
100 – 90 = A
89-80 = B
79 – 70 = C
69 – 60 = D
59 – 0 = F
Assignments: Each student will be responsible for completing graded assignments online throughout the
semester. No assignment will be accepted after the due date. Assignments not completed by the due date will
receive a zero. No make-up assignments will be given.
However, the lowest two homework grades will be dropped at the end of the semester.
Quizzes &Examinations: Three online quizzes, two proctored pencil-and-paper examinations and a comprehensive
final examination will be given. The material covered for each test is posted in the syllabus. If a student fails to
take an online quiz a zero will be recorded. The lowest quiz grade will be dropped at the end of the semester. If a
student fails to take a proctored exam by the end of the time it is available, they may take a make-up exam
provided that they qualify based upon the following guidelines. Only one make up per student per semester will
be given. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor in order to arrange a make-up exam.
Tutoring: Tutoring is available in the Learning Center at each campus. In addition, online tutoring is available
through SMARTHINKING. Go to the Virtual Campus website for registration information.
Other Information:
1. No retests will be given. Test scores will NOT be dropped from the calculation of the course grade. Once the
test is taken, that is the grade that will be counted.
2. I expect the highest level of academic honesty from all of my students. Any incident of academic dishonesty will
result in a zero on the work in question and/or a grade of an F in the course.
3. In order to succeed in this course, students will need to log onto the course website on a regular basis.
Announcements concerning graded homework assignments and tests, as well as material to supplement the text
and discussions will be posted on the website. It is the student’s responsibility to keep pace with the class and to
adhere to all posted deadlines. I recommend spending at least 8-10 hours a week on this class to be successful.
4. Emails from students will normally receive a response within 24 hours. Response time may be longer on
weekends and college holidays and breaks.
5. Withdrawal Information:
*Registered students need to log into the course website on the first day of classes, May 26th.
*Students who have registered for the course but have not logged into the course website by the end of
the first week, May 29th will be dropped from the course as “never attended”.
*No withdrawals will be processed after noon on August 11th .
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:
• Perform the operations of multiplication and synthetic division on polynomials
• Simplify and perform the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division on
rational expressions, radical expressions and complex numbers
• Factor polynomials by substitution and multi-step techniques
• Solve each of the following: absolute value equations, absolute value inequalities, quadratic
equations, rational equations, systems of linear equations in three unknowns, and radical
equations
• Use the laws of exponents to simplify expressions containing rational exponents
• Translate real life applications into mathematical equations, formulate problem solving
strategies, and interpret the solutions
• Determine whether a relation is a function, evaluate functions, interpret functions, and use
function notation
• Graph solution sets for linear and non-linear functions in two unknowns and identify domain and
range of the functions

Proctored Exam #3 –Chapters 2-8 (Available August 10 and August 11 at your regional campus)
We will have three proctored exams, all of which are paper tests. Students will take these tests at the HACC
campus through which they are registered.
Summer Testing Schedule (*Check the Virtual Campus web site for dates and times available at your campus.)
Test 1 June 15 and June 16
Test 2 July 13 and July 14
Test 3 August 10 and August 11
If you cannot come to one of the campus locations to take your proctored paper exam, you will need to make your
instructor aware of this situation and secure a qualified proctor with the instructor's permission. A test proctor
form must be completed and mailed to the Virtual Campus Office for approval two weeks prior to your requested
test date. The form will be forwarded to your instructor for approval.
You can download the guidelines for securing a proctor and a proctor form from the Virtual Campus web site
atwww.hacc.edu/virtualCampus/. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the file. Print out the form and
follow the instructions on the form. If you would like a form mailed to you, contact the Virtual Campus Office.
