How to apply for Undergraduate Need

2017-2018 Need-Based Financial Assistance (Grants, Loans and Work-Study)
All first time need-based aid applicants
Applying for Federal and State Aid? After October 1, 2016 and before your admission deadline:
1. Get your FSA ID now https://fsaid.gov.
2. Complete the 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at: www.fafsa.ed.gov.
Our Title IV school code is (003534).
We strongly encourage you to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) embedded in the FAFSA. Assets must be
reported as of the date you complete the FAFSA and are not subject to update. Household size and number in
college should reflect July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018.
Interested in Sewanee Need-Based Grant funding? After October 1, 2016 and before your admission
deadline:
1. Apply for federal and state financial aid, see above.
2. Complete the 2017-2018 CSS Profile at student.collegeboard.org/profile. Sewanee’s School Code
for the Profile is 1842.
3. Submit a signed copy of the first two pages of the custodial parent(s) federal 2015 tax return and
copies of all IRS Form W-2’s for each source of employment income received by the parent(s) in tax
year 2015. We reserve the right to request additional tax information or other documentation to
determine eligibility for our institutional funds.
Was your FAFSA selected for Verification? By December 1, 2016:
 Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) imbedded in the FAFSA process OR
 Submit a tax transcript and provide all applicable W-2 forms for both parent and student tax filers.
Tax returns cannot be used to complete federal verification but are still required to receive
institutional funding. Transcripts can be requested online at www.irs.gov/Individuals/Get-Transcript.
 Non-tax filers must submit our Non-tax filer form and all 2015 W-2 forms.
 All other required documentation listed on your student portal.
You will be notified of your verification selection on the results of your FAFSA and requirements are listed on
your student portal. All required documents must be submitted to determine your need-based aid eligibility.
Additional items may also be requested based on your verification status or at the discretion of the Financial
Aid Office. Applicants will be notified if other documentation is required.
Payment plan information is available at sewanee.afford.com and all parents are eligible to apply for a Federal
Direct PLUS loan to finance the family’s portion of educational expenses. Prospective undergraduates applying
for need-based assistance from Sewanee must be active candidates for admission. You may begin the financial
aid application process prior to notification of acceptance, but calculation of any financial aid eligibility is only
processed for admitted students.

General Application Tips
Get your FSA ID at https://fsaid.gov, one for the student and one for a parent who provides data on the FAFSA.
File on time or EARLY! The 2017-2018 FAFSA can be completed as early as October 1, 2016 at
www.fafsa.gov. Our Title IV School Code is 003534.
Schools may require forms in addition to the FAFSA. Check their web site. Some schools, like Sewanee, also
require the College Scholarship Service (CSS) Profile to award need-based institutional funds.
Make note of deadlines. Late applications jeopardize your opportunity for funding.
Tennessee residents must file a FAFSA to receive the Tennessee Hope Scholarship. Due to limited state
funding for the Tennessee need-based grant, file the FAFSA prior to October 31, 2016.
Do not leave items blank. If the answer is zero, indicate (0) on the form.
Be certain to submit your forms complete, accurate, and on time. Watch that data entry; an extra zero can
impact your eligibility.
Sign everything and reference the student’s full legal name or ID number on all documents.
Make certain you send clear copies of all documents, especially if they are faxed. Many offices use document
management systems. The clearer the document the better it scans.
As with all important documents, keep copies. With document management systems the copy you submit may
be shredded once it is scanned depending on the procedures in place at that particular school.
Do not fax and mail the same document unless specifically requested to do so. This delays processing as staff
try to determine if they received a copy or revision.
Ask questions! The financial aid staff is here to help. If you don’t understand something let us know.
