NOVEMBER 2004
NOTE FROM THE EDITOR: It’s time once again for our annual edition of Alumni News. We publish once a year figuring
that gives you a whole year to do something so compelling that it ends up in this newsletter. Of course we also have to find
out about it which requires us to activate our network of sleuths, spies, gossips, mothers or other alumni who we pump for
information. As always we rarely check our sources so we apologize for any inaccuracies. To get your news in this
newsletter correctly will require you to send it in yourself by email, snail mail or on-line (www.northstarcamp.com).
With this newsletter we are shamelessly promoting ourselves so that you will spread news of North Star to your neighborhood kids, grandkids, your own kids, and other people’s kids, cousins, etc. I think our methods are working because we have
had to find a bigger location for the second generation plaque which is growing. This newsletter also gives us an opportunity to brag about our NSC men, something that we love to do. We use this venue so as to spare our friends and relatives.
If you can’t tell by reading this newsletter, Leb and I are beyond proud to be associated with all of you and our hearts are
warmed that you stay connected and nurture your camp friendships. We also make an assumption that you enjoy reading
about people that you knew when you were 12. We realize that most of you have extremely busy lives, so we appreciate any
amount of time that you spend actually reading this newsletter and hope that it is worth the read. We look forward to our
paths crossing as we travel across the country recruiting campers.
Remembering ‘Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em” Rosenblum
This year we have been in touch with many alumni who called or
wrote to pay tribute to Lou Rosenblum who along with Renee
founded North Star. Lou passed away in February at 88. His
memorial service was a tribute to a life well lived. It was overwhelming and heart warming to see all of those NSC men gathered together singing “All My Life’s A Circle” along with Don
Gibson. Lou would have loved the service composed of some music, humor and stories that Renee and Linda put together for him.
The only thing missing was the council ring. He would have also liked the fact that we lingered too long and needed to be
kicked out of the temple. North Star types can never get enough of one another and Lou loved putting people together.
Lou’s nephew Mort Rosenblum, who is a reporter for the Associated Press in Paris, wrote the following: “Lou was 6 when
his mother, Anna, took her five children away from a Russian revolution gone wrong (costing the death of Lou’s father).
They fled Borisov, near the White Russian border with Poland after a saga of courage and cunning Anna replanted her
family north of Milwaukee. The family scrapbook soon filled with Lou’s exploits. He was a football star, later courted by
the pros. He ran track, swam, played baseball and basketball. Name it, and he did it. On a dare, he entered a boxing ring
with no experience and won a Golden Gloves title. He learned how to ski on a single run by following an unwitting
stranger down a steep slope. At 19, “Rosy” was the youngest athletic director ever at the Milwaukee Jewish Community
Center. “Rock ‘Em Sock “Em”Rosenblum was an all conference halfback at what is now the University of WisconsinMilwaukee. At a roller rink one evening, however he managed to smack into a wall. He spotted a local beauty. Showing
off he kept his eyes on her too long. They were married in June of 1944. Beyond his own skills and athletic prowess, he
felt a strong need to help others. With a degree in education, he started North Star in 1945 as a summer camp for boys.”
All of us at camp have heard the camp lore of what happened next but those of us who remembered Lou at his memorial
will not forget the man. Hugo Melvoine said, “Lou Rosenblum has a lasting and positive impact on countless lives.
Thousands of people have been touched by his humanity and genuine goodness. For many of us in that lucky group, our
memories are rooted in what Lou did and said to us, one on one, at North Star. We all know in our hearts that these few
minutes we devote to him are small drops in the ocean of our affection.” Oscar Hammerstein ll
THE LOU AND RENEE ROSENBLUM
SCHOLARSHIP FUND.........
One of the many legacies that Lou
has left behind is 5 alumni that own
and direct their own summer camps:
TOM ADLER at Chipewa Ranch
Camp, MIKE JAY at Camp Kamaji,
MIKE COHEN at Camp
Timberlane, BARBARA and GABE
CHERNOV at Camp Birch Trail for Girls, and Leb and I at
North Star. The five camps have decided to do something
unprecedented in the world of camping. We are merging
our respective scholarship programs into one Super Fund
with the goal of creating a 3 million dollar endowment.
The Lou and Renee Rosenblum Scholarship Fund will be a
subset of the Camp Kids Foundation. The Fund is a legitimate 501-(C)3 non profit organization and all contributions
are tax deductible. Each camp has special people within
their communities and it is our hope that these people can
be acknowledged in perpetuity through this program. Money
raised and placed into the endowment will be used to continue the efforts of the Camp Kids Foundation, founded with
the help of Mike Jay 9 years ago, to send minority children
to private camps. The beauty of the program is that these
campers will be able to attend “their camp” as long as they
want. Just like all of the other campers they can benefit
from a long term relationship with the camp. The endowment will also continue to fund the programs that the
Rosenblums were active in sending inner city kids to agency
camps i.e. Camp Flambeau.
Rick Fishel (NSC 60’s) has agreed to be the co-chair of this
effort. Carl Simons (father of NSC camper MIKE and PAUL
SIMONS). Ken Doane (NSC 80’s) brings to the board his
expertise as head of a large nonprofit.
Please consider a tax deductible gift made out to the Camp
Kids Foundation to help us realize our goal of 3 million
dollars. We thank all of you who have already made generous gifts to the endowment. They are most appreciated.
THE BEST GIFT IS A GIFT OF OPPORTUNITY
Renee and Linda Rosenblum have been moved
by the out pouring of community since Lou’s
death. Renee has had some health issues, however, her light continues to shine through it all.
She sends her love and gratitude and she
FAMILY CAMP 2004
We love it when alumni come back to
camp for Post Camp. Alumni are low
maintenance and “with the program”. They come equipped with
guitars and camp stories to share
with children. If they don’t like the
program they plan their own. It’s a no brainer family vacation. We do all the work and you have all the fun. Just to
reassure you, we haven’t served beenie weenie or turkey
tetrachloride in over 25 years so it’s safe to come back.
Family Camp is a little like Club Med. The biggest decision one makes in the week is whether to water-ski, climb,
horseback ride, sail, tube down the Namekagon, mountain
bike on the old logging trails, fish, etc. etc. etc. Our families never have to worry about their next meal or entertainment. Our able Post Camp staff see to that. Our tennis pro
not only offers tennis clinics and a tennis tournament but
he is a professional musician. Mike’s band comes up from
Minneapolis to play for our lakeside happy hour. We gather
a fun loving crew of camp counselors from around the world
to help run our programs. By the end of the week the kids
are hooked and demand that they return.
Contact our office for details if your family would like to
attend Family Camp.
DATES FOR POST CAMP 2005: AUG. 13TH -AUG. 20TH

TEN YEAR MEN AT CAMP IN 2004
BRIAN GLICKMAN: We celebrated Brian’s ten years at
camp in the unusual way with roasts and toasts and a cake.
Brian started camp when he was a little guy and told us early
on that he would be a ten year man. Camp is in his blood
being a second generation camper. Over the years we have
seen this quiet little kid become increasingly more confident
to the point where he is now performing his original songs at
campfires and taking a leadership role at camp. His strong
interest in music has led him to work at the University of
Illinois booking concerts on campus. Brian has also introduced his aging camp director to some new music occasionally. We’re very happy that Brian has chose to spend his
summers with us.
All my life’s a circle..... BETH
SHEFCYK JOINS US IN OUR TUCSON OFFICE.
Beth’s history with North Star goes way
back to her childhood. Her father Dennis
Shefcyk was our Program Director for 20
years. Growing up at camp, Beth developed a deep connection to the camp community. When Beth was going to college
she worked in our office and last summer came back to
camp to teach our seniors peer mediation. Having her summer free, she again returned to North Star this time to be
our Program Director following in her Dad’s footsteps. Beth
holds a bachelors degree in Psychology and a masters degree in Education. She has been working as a school counselor and also a peer mediation instructor. We welcome
Beth on board. She will be the friendly voice you hear when
you call our winter office.
