PRICEWATERHOUSECOOPERS JOINS JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT IN SUPPORTING
LOCAL SCHOOLS
Earn Your Future is PwC’s signature effort to teach young people Financial
Literacy
Philadelphia, PA. – PricewaterhouseCoopers and Junior Achievement of Delaware
Valley will be providing educational programs through a one-day event in at least
seven schools in Philadelphia on November 1st. Partnering to promote PwC’s Earn
Your Future initiative, the event allows volunteers to present the JA program to
students in one day. On Friday, over 320 PwC volunteers will be teaching over 3,720
students at these schools.
Participating schools will include: Henry H. Houston Elementary, Julia Ward Howe
Elementary, James Logan Elementary, James Lowell Elementary, Samuel
Pennypacker, Thurgood Marshall, and John Wister Schools.
According to research conducted by Junior Achievement USA, 48% of students are not
sure how to manage a credit card. The same survey indicates that 81% of respondents
indicated the best time to learn such concepts is while in school. During the course of
the day, students learn about the responsible use of credit, as well as other aspects of
financial literacy. For example, second graders learn how money moves through a
community, creating jobs and generating tax proceeds that pay for schools, parks and
streets. And in the eighth grade, students explore the intersection of education and
career choices and the impact on future earnings while making difficult decisions
around spending and opportunity costs in their personal budget.
“We are very excited to work with Junior Achievement to help local children increase
their financial literacy. Junior Achievement's mission of promoting work readiness,
entrepreneurship, and financial literacy aligns with PwC’s national and market-wide
focus on developing future leaders, and we are looking forward to building a lasting
connection between our offices and these schools," said Ed Lovelidge, PwC
Philadelphia Managing Partner.
“PwC has a long history of serving clients in the Philadelphia market, and we’re proud
to further our dedication to this community by bringing volunteer hours and financial
support to local youth through an organization like Junior Achievement.”
Through Earn Your Future, PwC is working to help close the educational gap, by
collaborating with schools and community organizations like Junior Achievement to
drive improvement around financial literacy. Through this five-year multimillion dollar
commitment, which aims to impact 2.5 million students and educators, PwC is
leveraging its more than 38,000 people and their core skill set to improve the financial
competency and education of our nation’s youth.
“This exciting collaborative allows volunteers to impact many students in the
Philadelphia community in one day, far more than either organization could reach
individually," commented Paul Kappel, President of Junior Achievement. "This
partnership allows volunteers to educate students about financial literacy,
entrepreneurship, and the free enterprise system in an effective manner. It’s a win-win
situation for both PricewaterhouseCoopers and the schools. Now more than ever, our
children need to learn about the economics of life."
