Dear Parent or Guardian:
Your child is currently learning to find which numbers are missing
from a sequence of numbers. Here is your chance to help your child
practice this important skill.
In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your
child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening.
Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it
tomorrow.
Remember, parents are a child’s first teacher. Thank you for your
time and energy in making learning fun and exciting for your child.
Sincerely,

FINDING THE MISSING NUMBERS IN A SEQUENCE
Parent Pointer —
Your child is learning how to find a missing number or numbers in a
sequence of numbers. This concept will help your child understand the
order of numbers, a building block to our base ten number system. It
is also the first step in learning algebra. Since numbers are used daily
in our lives, it is important for your child to understand how to find the
missing numbers in a sequence.
Math in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It —
DIRECTIONS: Read and talk about the Find the Missing Number
reference sheet with your child. Help him or her write on the lines
each number that is missing. Make sure to emphasize how important it
is to check the answer by counting on or counting in the opposite
direction. Read the directions on the What’s Missing? activity page to
your child. Later, when he or she is ready, you can make additional
“Don’t Peek” cards or additional number strips to add larger numbers to
this activity. Have fun working with your child to complete the
activity.
Talk about It —
After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to have
your child show what he or she knows.
Now go have some fun with the activity! (

Find the Missing Number
In school, you have been practicing reading your numbers.
But what would you do if a number, or even two numbers, were
missing? Let’s find out!
Look at this set of numbers.
One number is missing.
1, 2, 3, ___, 5, 6, 7
To find the missing number, just say the numbers in
order: 1, 2, 3. . . . Which number comes after 3?
Yes! 4 To make sure you are right, keep counting.
Which number comes after 4? Yes, 5
Write the number 4 on the line.
Let’s try another one. Two numbers are missing this time.
5, 6, 7, 8, ___, ___, 11, 12
Do the same thing. Say the numbers out loud, starting with
the 5. Write the two missing numbers on the lines.
Sometimes, the numbers go backward. You have been
counting backward in class. Start with the 10 and count
down. Which number is missing? To check and see if
you are right, you can start with 1 and count up!
10, 9, 8, 7, ___, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

What’s Missing?
Materials:
Help your child cut out the number strips and “Don’t Peek”
cards from the next page.
You go first. Your child needs to close his or her eyes.
Choose a number strip. You may use one or two “Don’t
Peek” cards. Place your “Don’t Peek” card or cards over
one or two of the numbers on the number strip.
Have your child open his or her eyes.
Ask: “Which number(s) is(are) missing?”
If the answer is correct, it is now your child’s turn.
Now you need to close your eyes while your child chooses a
number strip and one or two “Don’t Peek” cards.
Have fun playing this game with your child!

Talk about It
Parent —
Ask your child the following questions:
9 How can you find the missing number or numbers in a
set of numbers?
9 How can you check to see if your answer is correct?
Write your child’s answers to the above questions on the
reverse side of this page.
OR
Do one of the following activities on the reverse side of
this page:
9 Write a set of numbers going backward with three
numbers missing. The missing numbers should not be
sequential, for example, 15, 13, and 10. Have your
child write the missing numbers. Remember to have
him or her check the answers by counting up.
9 Write your child’s age and then every other number
through 20. Take turns with your child filling in the
missing numbers.
