Stephanie’s Corner
To look out the window now, I
can’t believe how quickly it seems
spring has arrived, bringing the
gifts that bloom with it. April was
a great month and we were so
busy with all the Passover and
Easter festivities, it seems like the
month just flew by. We were also
able to fit in some spring flower
seed planting with our new Green
Thumb Club.
May is going to be another
wonderful month. We have many
reasons to celebrate. Memorial
Day gives Chef Vinnie another
reason to fire up the grill as he
prepares for the annual Memorial
Day BBQ. We hope you join us to
honor those who are so deserving.
Also, please make plans to join
us for our Mother’s Day luncheon
at 11 a.m. in Josephine’s Kitchen.
These are a few fun facts on some
of the women throughout history
who have raised children while
racking up other amazing
accomplishments.
Marie Curie. Physicist, chemist,
wife and mother of two daughters,
Curie is best known for
discovering the elements
polonium and radium. In 1903,
Curie became the first woman to
win a Nobel Prize. She later served
as the first female professor at the
University of Paris.
Grandma Moses. Anna Mary
Moses raised five children on
farms in Virginia and New York.
Creative since childhood, she
began painting in her late 70s and
became known as Grandma
Moses. Her depictions of rural life
are internationally recognized.
One of her pieces hangs in the
White House; another sold for
$1.2 million in 2006. Moses
passed away at age 101 in 1961.
Margaret Thatcher. The first
female prime minister of Great
Britain served three terms, from
1979 to 1991. The mother of
twins also wrote three books.
Sandra Day O’Connor. The first
woman appointed to the U.S.
Supreme Court, O’Connor and
her husband, John, had three
sons. After serving admirably on
the high court for 24 years,
O’Connor retired to spend more
time with John, who had
Alzheimer’s disease. In 2009, she
was honored with the Presidential
Medal of Freedom.

Rukija Hodzic, AL PAL
Congratulations, Rukija!
Rukija Hodzic is May’s
Employee of the Month! Rukija
has been a PAL at Belmont for
four years now and definitely
shown her initiative to do things
when she sees they need to be
done, without being asked. Rukija
is always on the move and making
sure her residents are well
cared for.
Rukija was born in Sarajevo,
Bosnia. She is the mother of
twins. Her son lives here in
Memphis and her daughter lives
in Switzerland.
When Rukija is not working,
one of her pastimes is shopping.
She also loves to stay healthy by
eating lots of fruits and vegetables,
and of course by keeping up to
speed with all of her residents.
Thank you, Rukija, for all that
you do at Belmont Village!
Congratulations!

Dehydration’s Effect on
the Elderly Population
With summer fast approaching,
no time like the present to discuss
the importance of good hydration.
Dehydration is a common
problem and we have all probably
suffered from it at one time or
another in our lives. What many
of us don’t realize is how serious it
can be for an elderly person.
Elderly people have increased risk
factors and often may not be
aware of the severity of the
consequences associated with
dehydration.
Mild dehydration is defined as
a 1.5% loss in the body’s normal
water volume. Our body does not
register thirst until 1-2% of the
water volume is already depleted.
Thus, when you feel thirsty you
are already experiencing slight
dehydration. Older people are at a
greater risk due to physiological
changes in the aging process that
can be further complicated by
their health conditions and
mental/physical state. Age related
changes include a decrease in
thirst sensation. This sensation
can be further compromised if the
person has had a stroke, has
decreased renal function, poorly
controlled diabetes, or Dementia/
Alzheimer’s disease. Dehydration
can also be exacerbated by some
medications, including laxatives,
diuretics, and anti hypertensives.
Common risk factors for
dehydration include being elderly,
living in a care facility, requiring
assistance with food and fluid
intake, incontinence, depression,
and acute illness with
diarrhea/vomiting. Dehydration is
often associated with poor health
outcomes, including increased
hospitalizations, weakness,
dizziness, and increased risk of
falling. Poorly hydrated
individuals are more likely to
develop pressure ulcers, urinary
tract infections, and constipation.
With all of this being said, what
can we do to help prevent
dehydration? The obvious answer
is drinking more water, and
encouraging others to do the
same. For our elderly population
we need to have water readily
available and encourage them to
drink. Have fluids available at all
activities and meals. Offer a glass
of water with all medication
administration. Encourage foods
like Jell-O and Popsicles to aid in
hydration as well. Such a simple
thing as hydration can have a
huge impact on your health, so
drink up!

Happy 100th Birthday
Ms. Priscilla Day!!!
Birthday girl and guests!
Ms. Priscilla Day, in her early 30s
Priscilla and her special friend Nikki.
Turning 100 is THE biggest
milestone birthday.
On March 14th, Priscilla Day
joined the ever growing
population of centenarians and
celebrated her 100th birthday
with family and friends.
Born on March 14, 1917, in
Springfield, Massachusetts,
Priscilla was married for 55 years
and had one son, Tom, one
granddaughter and 5
great-grandchildren.
Ms. Day obtained her BS in
Music with a focus on organ and
piano at Skidmore College in
Saratoga, NY. She was also very
active in the D.A.R. (Daughters of
the American Revolution).
Among the many things
Priscilla enjoys is reading,
crossword puzzles, interactive
discussions, visiting and lectures
(especially historical topics).
As the party continued, Priscilla
and her guests enjoyed cake,
presents and time spent with the
birthday girl.
COF and
NEIGHBORHOOD
DISCOVERIES
Both the COF and
Neighborhood kicked off April
with the time honored tradition of
pranks and jokes that come along
with April Fools’ Day. April Fools’
Day has been celebrated for
several centuries by different
cultures. Some speculate that April
Fools’ Day dates back to 1582,
when France switched from the
Julian calendar to the Gregorian
calendar. People who were slow to
get the news or failed to recognize
that the start of the new year had
moved to January 1 and
continued to celebrate it during
the last week of March through
April 1 became the butt of jokes
and hoaxes. These included
having paper fish placed on their
backs and being referred to as
“poisson d’avril” (April fish), said
to symbolize a young, easily
caught fish and a gullible person.
Others speculate that April
Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal
equinox, or first day of spring in
the Northern Hemisphere, when
Mother Nature fooled people with
changing, unpredictable weather.
April Fools’ Day spread
throughout Britain during the
18th century. In Scotland, the
tradition became a two-day event,
starting with “hunting the gowk,”
in which people were sent on
phony errands (gowk is a word for
cuckoo bird, a symbol for fool)
and followed by Tailie Day, which
involved pranks played on
people’s derrieres, such as pinning
fake tails or “kick me” signs
on them.
Some have gone to great
lengths to create elaborate April
Fools’ Day hoaxes. The media has
participated in the April 1
tradition of reporting outrageous
fictional claims. In 1957, the BBC
reported that Swiss farmers were
experiencing a record spaghetti
crop and showed footage of
people harvesting noodles from
trees. In 1985, Sports
Illustrated tricked many of its
readers when it ran a made-up
article about a rookie pitcher
named Sidd Finch who could
throw a fastball over 168 miles
per hour. In 1996, Taco Bell
duped people when it announced
it had agreed to purchase
Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell and
rename it the Taco Liberty Bell. In
1998, after Burger King advertised
a “Left-Handed Whopper,” scores
of clueless customers requested
the fake sandwich.

Love Your Years
There are some who wish
they could avoid getting older,
but a number of polls and
studies show that with age
comes more happiness. While
researchers can’t point to a
specific reason for this growing
contentment, factors may
include learning to enjoy life’s
simple pleasures and having
time for personal interests.
