Many people are very knowledgeable about the pollution we face daily in
our cities from cars, factories, etc. – but, do you realise that there’s a HUGE
amount of pollution to be found in your home? Most people, however, are

The EPA reports that indoor air is from 2 to 5 times more hazardous than
outdoor air and as most people spend more than 90% of their time indoors,
it is generally accepted that indoor air is the number one environmental

Indoor Air Pollution Awareness
The Invisible Threat
According to a study by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, indoor
air contaminants are responsible for or aggravate half of all illnesses.
Chances are that you may be suffering from an illness or sensitivity
due to a host of indoor air pollutants such as cleaning chemicals,
paint fumes, organic fumes, dust, dust mites, pet dander, pollen,
mould spores, tobacco smoke, out-gassing of construction
materials, bacteria, viruses and fungi.
These indoor air pollutants put stress on our immune system, which
can lead to other health problems. The effects of poor indoor air
quality on an individual can vary greatly based on age and relative
health. Children are especially at risk because they breathe faster
than adults; children inhale 50 percent more air per pound of body weight
than adults and are especially sensitive to air quality problems. They
have become more prone to asthma in recent years. Physicians and
researchers conclude that asthma is on the rise for several reasons,
including air pollution and the proliferation of synthetic materials in
our environment.
The Friendly Hazards
We all love our pets, but not the hair or dander they bring into our
homes. Our pets’ dead skin flakes, urine, feces, saliva and hair can
trigger asthma and can cause an allergic reaction.
Hay fever affects more than 115 million people worldwide, according to
the World Health Organization. WHO has suggested urban air pollution
may be one of the reasons the problem is growing. It is recommended
we drink approximately two quarts of clean water each day. By
comparison, we inhale approximately 15,000 quarts of air each day.
Categories of Indoor Pollutants
There are three main categories of indoor pollution:
1. Particulate Matter (Dust, Pollen, Spores, Smoke and Dander)
2. Biological contaminants (Bacteria, Virus, Germs)
3. Volatile Organic Compounds or VOCs (Chemicals and
vapours from paints, dry cleaning, pressed wood furniture,
adhesives, carpets, upholstery, drapes, tobacco smoke, nail
polish removers, air fresheners, perfumes and plastics etc.)

Recommendations:
The EPA suggests three basic methods for improving indoor air quality:
1. Control the source of air pollution
2. Improve ventilation
3. Purchase an air purifier
Whole House Air Filters and Air Exchangers
Whole house air filters are the standard furnace filters found in most
homes today where air is forced through ductwork and passively
drawn back through the return vents. This system is only moderately
effective at mostly filtering larger pollutants such as dust and large
pollen spores. Similarly, air exchanger units exchange stale indoor
air with “fresher” outdoor air. Outdoor “fresher” air is subjective
depending whether you live in the country or in a relatively polluted
city environment.
Poorly designed ductwork, placement of vents and leakage
issues are just few of the many factors that limit the effectiveness.
Drawbacks of air exchangers include significant increases in
heating and cooling costs and increased noise levels even when
installed in the basement.
Room size Air Purifiers - Factors to consider
Most people, for a variety of reasons including improved cleaning
capability, portability, ease of use, installation and cost, opt for a
room size air purifier over a larger whole house system. Here is a list
of factors to consider in making your decision:
1. Types of air purifying technologies
2. Size of area to be covered
3. Cost of the unit and the replaceable parts
4. Power consumption required for maximum performance
5. The types of pollutants to combat
Portable air purifiers may incorporate any combination of the air
purification technologies such as Pre-Filters, Ionization, Germicidal
UV Lamps, HEPA Filters, Carbon Filters, Electrostatic Filters and
TiO2 Filters. Each technology has its own strengths and weaknesses
in terms of removing certain types of toxins. There is no single
technology that can remove every pollutant from the air. An
appropriate air purification technology has to be selected to combat
particular types of pollutants. For example, Germicidal UV light is
more effective against germs and viruses. Air purifiers that offers
multiple built-in technologies usually covers a wider spectrum of
contaminants. Cleaning the indoor air is an ongoing process as the
pollutants keep getting introduced into our breathing space.

Negative Ions – Ionisation
Numerous studies demonstrate that the presence of negative ions is beneficial
for physical and mental health. Indoor air is very low in concentrations of
healthy negative ions. Mountain air, in comparison, contains more than ten times
the negative ions found in city air. Negative ion concentrations often exceed
100,000/cm³, as is the case near the falls in Yosemite Valley in California or
near the world’s largest negative ion generator Niagara Falls, Canada.
Virtually all particles in the air have a positive charge, while negative ions have
a negative charge. In which case, negative ions and particles magnetically
attract to one another causing the particle to become too heavy to remain
airborne. As a result, the particle will fall out of the air, preventing it from being
inhaled into the respiratory tract where it can trigger breathing and health
problems.
According to noted ionisation and health researcher Fred Soyka, in his ground
breaking book “The Ion Effect”, there are over 5,000 scientific documents in
many languages reporting experiments with ionisation, and all support the
conclusion that, generally speaking, an overdose of positive ions is bad for
you while an overdose of negative ions seems to be beneficial. Dr. E.R. Holiday,
a noted researcher, suggests Negative Ions as “the vitamins of the air”.
High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) Filter
In World War II the Atomic Energy Commission needed a filter to
protect researches from radioactive dust particles that might present a
health hazard to them. The HEPA filter was born. HEPA filters are largely
considered the most effective type of air filter for solid particles, such as
dust and other allergens. HEPA filters remove 99.97% of particles down
to 0.3 microns in size, almost 300 times smaller than the width of a
human hair. For this reason HEPA filters are used in environments that
rely on high clean-air standards. Surgical facilities and laboratories are
a few examples of environments that utilize HEPA filters. HEPA filters are
particularly useful for allergy sufferers and are recommended by the U.S.
Dept. of Homeland Security.
Ultra Violet Germicidal Lamp
Ultraviolet light possesses just the right amount of energy to
effectively kill the DNA of micro-organisms including germs, viruses,
bacteria, and mould spores. No other air purification is more effective
at neutralising microorganisms than ultraviolet light radiation. The
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends UV light radiation
to prevent illness and disease.
Activated Carbon Filter
Activated carbon is charcoal that is treated with oxygen in order to open up
millions of tiny microscopic pores between the carbon atoms, resulting in
a highly adsorbent material and form a strong chemical bond to odorous,
gaseous, and liquid contaminates. This is the most absorbent filter available for
volatile chemical fumes, gases, cigarette smoke, and odours. Once captured the
filter does not release contaminates back into the air.

Active Oxygen (Ozone, O3)
Studies show that ozone is safe and effective when occurring
within FDA and OSHA standards of 0.05 ppm (parts per million),
and many have found it to be the best way to reduce or eliminate
odours. Ozone oxidises airborne pollutants, and then reverts back
to oxygen, transforming polluted air to pure and refresh air. Ozone
is found naturally in the air and in low concentrations has a fresh
clover-like smell such as after a lightening storm.
According to American Society of Heating, Refrigeration, and Air
Conditioning (ASHRAE), Ozone controls surface mould on packages
and walls, and reduces scale development and decay. “The presence
of ozone . . . significantly reduces the occurrence of mould.”
And according to Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES):
“Ozone is one of the purest and most powerful oxidants and germicides
known.”
Pre- Filter / Anti-Bacterial Filter
Polluted air first passes through the pre-filter which is designed to filter
larger particles such as dust, pet hair and lint. It prevents clogging and
preserves the life of other filters, so more pores can remain available in the
activated carbon and HEPA air filters for the harder-to-remove pollutants.
Photocatalytic Technology (TiO2)
Photocatalytic technology automatically destroys pollutant gases
and microorganisms. The filter frame houses titanium dioxide in a
non-woven fiber media. An ultra-violet light source in front of the filter
initiates the photocatalytic process.
Harmful gases such as toluene, nitrogen and sulphur dioxides
are eliminated and any micro-organisms trapped by the filter are
destroyed. The selfregeneration of the titanium dioxide by the
photocatalysis process ensures a long system life.
Photocatalytic technology is FDA approved for reducing bacteria in poultry
and pork processing, and is used to cleanse pesticides from fruits and
vegetables.
Metal Collection Plates / Electrostatic Filters
Ionisers work by creating air that is densely packed with charged ions
that cause pollutants to be magnetically attracted to a metal collecting
plates or grid through “electrostatic precipitation”. They can trap ultrafine particles as small as 0.01 microns including bacteria, cigarette
smoke, chemical fumes, viruses and germs. The plates/grid can be
pulled out for periodic cleaning and does not require replacement which can
result in significant savings over a long period of time.

I have never contacted anybody with positive things to say about
anything but I now feel it’s my duty. I am in the environmental
industry dealing with people that have multiple chemical
sensitivity disorder (MCSD). We also deal with mould, asbestos
and hazardous material remediation on the consulting level.
We use commercial iltration units ranging from $1,000.00
thru $4,000.00. Obviously this machine does not compare to
the units costing thousand of dollars but what it does do is take
all of today’s technology and combine it into one machine. If
you bought a separate machine for all of the functions that this
machine provides you could easily spend $500.00 to $700.00
and still not get a unit thats as quality built as this.
