Teachers: Mrs. Cabak & Mrs. Osakwe / Life Science – 7th Grade
Topic: Unit 4 Human Body Systems – Digestive & Urinary System
Inquiry Question: Your goal is to answer this question…
What are the different systems of the body and how do they interact
to fulfill an organism’s needs? Focus on interaction with the digestive
and urinary systems.
1. Please find your assigned seat and put your personal items
under your seat.
2. You will need a book, pen or pencil, colored pencils, this paper,
and your science journal (composition notebook)
3. Start the Bell Ringer below.
4. Complete the Activity, Closing, and if you have time – complete
the advanced learning bonus.
5. Finish any incomplete work graded below 70 and turn it in.
6. Turn this foldable in at the end of class for a grade.
Objectives:
1. Compare mechanical digestion with chemical digestion.
2. Describe the parts and functions of the digestive System
3. Describe the parts and functions of the urinary system
4. Explain how the kidneys filter blood
5. Describe three disorders of the urinary system.
Bell Ringer: Your blood must be cleaned regularly. Without looking in
your textbook, guess how the body cleans the blood. Think about
what organs might be used to clean your blood.

Do you know what medical procedure you must undergo if your body
is no longer able to clean its own blood?

Opening: Review Digestive System
Read the following summary: Digestive System
Underline the following terms: digestive system, mechanical
digestion, chemical digestion, chime, bile, absorbs water
• Your digestive system is a group of organs that work together to
digest food so that the nutrients from food can be used by the body.
• The breaking and mashing of food is called mechanical digestion.
Chemical digestion is the process that breaks large food molecules
into simpler molecules.
• The stomach mixes food with acid and enzymes that break down
nutrients. The mixture is called chyme.
• In the small intestine, pancreatic fluid and bile are mixed with
chyme.
• From the small intestine, nutrients enter the bloodstream and are
circulated to the body’s cells.
• The liver makes bile, stores nutrients, and breaks down toxins.
• The large intestine absorbs water, changing liquid waste into
semisolid stool, or feces.
Match the correct description with the correct term. Write the letter
in the space provided.
_____1. a saclike organ that breaks down food into liquid
_____2. an oval organ that sends fluid into the small intestine to
chemically digest and
neutralize chyme
a. stomach (p.637)
_____3. a narrow tube covered with
b. small intestine (p.638)
nutrient-absorbing villi
_____4. a small, saclike organ that
c. pancreas (p.638)
stores bile
d. liver (p.639)
_____5. an organ that changes
e. large intestine (p.640)
liquid waste into semisolid
f. gallbladder (p.639)
waste
_____6. a large organ that stores nutrients and breaks down toxins
Activity: Read the following summary: Urinary System
Underline the following terms: urinary system, kidneys,
nephrons, urine, ureter, bladder, urethra, disorders
• The urinary system removes liquid waste as urine. The filtering
structures in the kidney are called nephrons.
• Most of the water in the blood is returned to the bloodstream.
 Urine passes through the ureter, into the bladder, and out of the
body through the urethra.
• Disorders of the urinary system include infections, kidney stones,
and kidney disease.
