Bernoulli’s Dimple Inventions
Directions:
Bernoulli’s Principle states that as the speed of a moving fluid increases, pressure
decreases. Dimples on a golf ball allow it to travel long distances because some of the
air, which goes around the ball as it travels, must travel long distances as it goes down,
around, and through each dimple as it spins. Since the air traveling in and out of the
dimples must travel farther in the same amount of time as the air traveling around the
dimples, it must travel faster- thus pressure around the ball is reduced!
1. Title poster BERNOULLI’S DIMPLE INVENTIONS
2. Draw small pictures of as many objects, pieces of equipment, devices, etc. that
would be beneficial to have dimples on, but currently don’t.
-
You draw the pictures of your new inventions as they would look with dimples.
Minimum of 15 new inventions
3. Under each picture on your poster, briefly explain why / how dimples would
improve your device.
4. You will receive 1 extra credit point for each invention that you come up with that
no one else in your class does. (Be creative & keep your ideas to yourself!)
THINGS TO CONSIDER:
Bernoulli’s Principle only applies to objects that move through fluids, not across the
ground. Make sure you are not increasing sliding or rolling friction, by making the
surface rougher.
