How to make a NO SEW Cape
What you will need:
★ Fleece
One yard of BLIZZARD (thick) fleece will make 2 capes. ½ of a
yard will not make one! The thicker the better!
The thicker fleece is MUCH easier to cut in a straight line. At
JoAnn, it is called Blizzard Fleece this fleece is on sale much of
the time for 50% off. Some of the other fleece is thick as well,
just stay clear of the thin fleece!
★ Scissors
Invest in a good pair. JoAnn, Hobby Lobby & Michaels all have
40% off coupons on their websites. Before you cut into your
fleece, lay it out and make sure you can get 2 capes out of one
yard of fleece.
★ Velcro
Purchase the self-adhesive Velcro squares. For super security,
adhere with a dot of hot glue if you have it available.
★ Heat n Bond ULTRA
Use Heat n Bond ULTRA, just follow the instructions on the
package. We will admit we were intimidated at first, but it was
very easy. Walmart had the best price in town.
JoAnn’s does not carry, Heat n Bond ULTRA they carry
something that comes in strips (like tape), it does not work
very well.
You will use Heat n Bond ULTRA to make t in e appliqués
(stars, flash/bolts, hearts, soccer ball, gators, cats, flowers etc.)
The patients will be able to choose what appliqués they want to
have on their capes.
★ Felt
Use different colors of felt for your appliqués.
Now for the FUN!
Difficulty Level: ★ (1out of 5)
Time Commitment: approximately 30 minutes
Step 1: Cut a piece of fleece into a 20" x 28" rectangle.
You can always adjust the length depending on the height of
your little hero. You will get 2 capes this size from a yard of
fleece – maybe more. Cut off selvage edge.
Step 2: Print the cape template document included and cut out
the template. Fold your fleece rectangle in half (long way) with
the fold to the right and the two open edges to the left. The
length of the fold will measure 28”. Place template on the fleece
and trace lightly along the curved edges ONLY. Do Not trace
the entire template.
Cut along the curved edges and extend your cut to the fold on
the right, (check out photo)
Step 3: Open your cape, add Velcro squares to create the neck
band.
Step 4: For appliqués choose symbols you think children would
like - we found Google images, make this very easy.
Have your appliqués printed on card stock and cut out so you
can simply trace them to create your template.
Iron the Heat n Bond to the felt, allow it to cool. Next, cut out
your shape. Take care with LETTERS and some symbols, you
need to reverse them (flip over) and trace on the white side not
the felt side, so they will be the right way round when they are
attached to the cape.
