County, municipality
These are the official ad m inistrative
d ivisions in Sw ed en. There are 21
cou nties and 290 m u nicip alities.
Urban area (locality)
There are 1 956 u rban areas in Sw ed en
accord ing to m ost recent d ivision from
2010. To be consid ered as an u rban area,
there shou ld be at least 200 inhabitants
and the hou ses shou ld not be m ore than
200 m etres ap art.
Smaller locality
There are 2 920 sm aller localities in
Sw ed en accord ing to the m ost recent
d ivision from 2010. To be consid ered a
sm aller locality, there shou ld be betw een
50 and 199 inhabitants and the hou ses
shou ld not be m ore than 150 m etres ap art.
SAMS area
SAMS stand s for Sm all Areas for Market
Statistics and is a d ivision based on
m u nicip alities su b-d ivisions (N YKO) in
larger m u nicip alities and on electoral
d istricts in the sm aller m u nicip alities.
There are arou nd 9 200 SAMS areas. The
d ivision w as created in Janu ary 1994 and
revised m ost recently in 2003. The SAMS
d ivisions have bou nd aries to m u nicip ality
bord ers.
District
District d ivision is a new d ivision that is
introd u ced into the p op u lation
registration d atabase 1 Janu ary 2016.
The d istrict d ivision w ill be based on an
ad ju sted version of the congregation
classification in force on 31 Decem ber
1999.
N o ad ju stm ent to tod ay's m u nicip al and /
or p rop erty bou nd ary is m ad e.
The d istrict d ivision w ill be stable in the
sense that it w ill not change in the fu tu re.
District bou nd aries d o not follow either
the p rop erty or m u nicip al bou nd aries.
Electoral district
An electoral d istrict is a d ivision that is
revised in conju nction w ith general
elections. There are arou nd 6 100 electoral
d istricts accord ing to the d ivision from
2006.
Postal code area
A d ivision created by Statistics Sw ed en
from the ad d ress p ostal cod es u sed by the
Sw ed ish Post Office. This is based on
p rop erties and d oes not therefore
corresp ond com p letely w ith the Sw ed ish
Post Office’s d ivisions.
The nu m ber of p ostal cod e areas on the
five-d igit level is rou ghly 9 800. The
d ivision is u p d ated once a year in Ap ril.
Grid frames
The registers u sed in Statistics Sw ed en’s
Market Profiles all have p rop erty as the
sm allest geograp hical u nit. Becau se all
p rop erties have a coord inate for w hich
the N ational Land Su rvey Office is
resp onsible, Statistics Sw ed en can
com p ile statistics for grid s of variou s
sizes.
We often p rod u ce grid statistics, u sing
250 x 250 m grid s for u rban areas and
1 x 1 km grid s for ru ral areas. There are
arou nd 110 000 p op u lated 1km grid s and
350 000 p op u lated 250 m grid s across the
w hole cou ntry.
The grid s are given u sing the official
coord inate system in Sw ed en, also fou nd
on m ap s p rod u ced by the N ational Land
Su rvey Office.
Free choice of areas
It is p ossible to p rod u ce statistics for all
typ es of regional d ivisions if a link can be
m ad e to p rop erties as the sm allest u nit.

bou nd aries for the 9 800 p ostal cod e areas
based on the ad d ress p ostal cod es u sed by
the Sw ed ish Post. Bou nd aries are created
au tom atically u sing register generating
and are therefore not d igitalized from a
base m ap of any kind .
Bou nd aries are based on p rop erty p oints,
in w hich all p rop erty p oints having the
sam e p ostal cod e are enclosed in a
p olygon. Polygons are linked to one
another; the bou nd aries betw een tw o
p olygons go in betw een p rop erties w ith
d ifferent p ostal cod es.
There are rou ghly 9 800 p ostal cod e areas
on a five-d igit level. The bou nd aries are
sold by cou nty or for the w hole cou ntry.
Postal cod e areas can also be rep orted as
p oints. The p oints have been created as
the m ed ian m id d le p oint of the
p op u lation in a p op u lated area.
The total nu m ber of p ostal cod es in the
cou ntry is abou t 16 000 (inclu d ing box

SAMS (Sm all Areas for Market Statistics)
have been created by Statistics Sw ed en,
u sing the ap p rop riate d igital bou nd aries
p rod u ced u sing register generating. The
m ethod is the sam e as that u sed to p rod u ce the p ostcod e bou nd aries as
d escribed above.
The bou nd aries w ere ad ju sted in 2003 to
m atch the m u nicip ality bou nd aries. There
are rou ghly 9 200 SAMS areas, and the
bou nd aries are sold by cou nty or for the
w hole cou ntry.

backgrou nd m ap . There are 1 940 u rban
areas and 2 876 sm aller localities in

Grid statistics are often d elivered u sing
d igital grid s, w hich are inclu d ed in the

taken from a variety of registers w ith
d ifferent tim eliness. This shou ld be taken
into accou nt as changes in the p op u lation
can m ean that the characteristics of a
p op u lation in an area m ay not be the
sam e from one year to the next. In
general, changes are not that d ram atic
and figu res referring to the situ ation in an
area a cou p le of years ago can be assu m ed
to reflect the cu rrent situ ation in the area.

how long it takes for Statistics Sw ed en to
receive the basic m aterial and how m u ch

Presentation of civil statu s is based on
how a p erson is registered in the
p op u lation registration. ‘‘Married ’’
inclu d es registered p artners, ‘‘d ivorced ’’

Households
The official statistics that are p u blished
on hou sehold s for the entire cou ntry,
cou nties and m u nicip alities are based on
registration p er d w elling1 in the Total
Pop u lation Register. These statistics are
generally assessed to be of good qu ality.
Accord ing to the Total Pop u lation
Register, hou sehold s are d efined as
follow s:
A hou sehold consists of all p ersons w ho
are registered at the sam e d w elling.
- The hou sehold size refers to the nu m ber
of p ersons w ho belong to a hou sehold . A
hou sehold consists of at least one p erson.
- Persons w ho are m arried to each
other/ are in a registered p artnership
w ith each other and are registered at the
sam e d w elling are cou nted as cohabiting.
- Persons w ho have child ren together,
w ithou t being m arried to each other or
are registered p artners, and are registered
at the sam e d w elling are cou nted as
cohabiting p ersons in a consensu al u nion.

Country of birth
Details on cou ntry of birth are taken from
the p op u lation registration. For p ersons
im m igrating to Sw ed en, d ata on cou ntry
of birth is registered w hen they arrive. If
bord ers have changed since this tim e, no
change has in general been m ad e in the
p op u lation registration regard ing the
cou ntry of birth noted .
Citizenship
Details of cou ntry of citizenship have
been taken from the p op u lation
registration. Citizenship shou ld in
p rincip le refer to a cu rrently existing
ind ep end ent state. For p ersons w ith d u al
citizenship , the citizenship noted is based
on a sp ecific ord er of p riority, w ith the
N ord ic cou ntries first.
Foreign and Swedish
background
Persons born abroad are consid ered to
have a foreign backgrou nd . The sam e
ap p lies to p ersons born in Sw ed en w hen
both p arents are born abroad . Persons
born in Sw ed en have a Sw ed ish
backgrou nd if at least one of their p arents
is born in Sw ed en.
Age
Refers to the age reached at the end of the
year.
The persons are at least 18 years old.
- The persons are of different sexes.
- The age difference between the persons is
less than 15 years.
- The persons are not close relatives.
- Only one possible consensual union couple

classifications in Sw ed ish bu siness has
been introd u ced . The revision w ork has
inclu d ed a large nu m ber of changes
com p ared to the earlier version SIC 2002.

m od el-based estim ation of the m aterial

betw een the qu estionnaire resp onses on
em p loym ent statu s in the LFS and
register d ata on salary incom e are u sed .
The d efinition of gainfu lly em p loyed in
the LFS is that an ind ivid u al shou ld have
w orked at least one hou r p er w eek d u ring
the m onth of N ovem ber; tem p orary
absence is also cou nted as gainfu lly
em p loyed .
For self-em p loyed p ersons, statem ent of
earnings d ata cannot be u sed so incom e
from active bu siness activities is u sed
instead . If a p erson’s incom e is greater
than zero over the year, this p erson is
alw ays consid ered as gainfu lly em p loyed .
From the beginning of 2004 a new sou rce
has been u sed for d ata on self-em p loyed
p ersons: Stand ard ised accou nting
statem ents. With these sou rces, selfem p loyed p ersons w ho have rep orted a
loss in their bu siness activities can also be
classified as gainfu lly em p loyed selfem p loyed p ersons.

Disposable income
Disp osable incom e is the am ou nt
rem aining for consu m p tion and savings
w hen final taxes have been d ed u cted and
tax-d ed u ctible com p ensations and
benefits (social assistance, hou sing
benefit, child benefit) have been ad d ed to
earned incom e and incom e from cap ital.
Disp osable incom e is a concep t u sed in
the com p lete incom e statistics that,
together w ith the concep t ‘‘p u rchasing
p ow er’’, best reflects the p u rchasing
p ow er and stand ard of living for d ifferent
grou p s in society. H ow ever, d isp osable
incom e is not rep orted on fam ily level,
w hich lead s to som e p roblem s w hen
com p aring m ean valu es. Single p ersons
norm ally have a low er level of d isp osable
incom e than m arried p ersons or those
taxed jointly. Som e regions have a larger
share of single p ersons w hile others have
a larger share of m arried p ersons/ p ersons

m em bers of a fam ily are given d ifferent
consu m p tion w eighting d ep end ing on
how the hou sehold is com p osed .
Low – medium-low – mediumhigh – high income
In several incom e tables, incom e is
rep orted in the categories low , m ed iu m low , and m ed iu m -high, high. These
categories have been created by d ivid ing
the p op u lation or fam ilies into fou r
equ ally-sized grou p s for the w hole
cou ntry. It is also p ossible to p resent
statistics for each incom e category.
Total earned income
Incom e from em p loym ent and incom e
from bu siness activities together form the
total earned incom e. Incom e from cap ital
is therefore not inclu d ed . This incom e
concep t is very sim ilar to the concep t of
incom e from w ork; the m ain d ifferences
are that p ensions and com p ensation from
the u nem p loym ent benefit office are not
inclu d ed in incom e from w ork. There are
other d ifferences bu t these tw o are the
m ost im p ortant. Since incom e from
cap ital is not inclu d ed in total earned
incom e, this incom e concep t is
ap p rop riate for u se w ith regional
com p arisons, p articu larly w hen the
m aterial is broken d ow n into sm all
regional areas. Incom e from cap ital is
often u nevenly d istribu ted and an
ind ivid u al w ith extrem ely high incom e
from cap ital can greatly affect the m ean

valu e for a region that has a sm all

Total earned income and income
from capital
This incom e concep t inclu d es all incom e
exclu d ing tax-d ed u ctible benefits (e.g.
social assistance, child benefit, hou sing
benefit) and ‘‘u ntaxed ’’ incom e. Total
earned incom e and incom e from cap ital
can be u sed if the total incom e is of
interest. H ow ever, it shou ld be noted that
the average incom e w ill be fairly low
becau se p art-tim e w orkers, you ng p eop le
w orking d u ring their holid ays and
child ren w ith a sm all am ou nt of incom e
from cap ital are inclu d ed in the
calcu lations. The su m of earned incom e
and incom e from cap ital can therefore not
shed light on w hat a fu ll-tim e em p loyed
ind ivid u al has for incom e.
Net income
Like d isp osable incom e, net incom e
consists of the su m of all taxable and taxfree incom e m inu s taxes and other
negative transfers. The d ifference
betw een net incom e and d isp osable
incom e is that net incom e show s the
ind ivid u al’s incom e, w hile d isp osable
incom e show s the fam ily’s total incom e.
This m eans that if the fam ily consists of
the p ersons X and Y, and Y d oes not have
an incom e, then Y has a net incom e of
SEK 0. H ow ever, the fam ily that Y
belongs to has a d isp osable incom e.
Financial assets
Financial assets consist of bank assets,
shares qu oted on the stock exchange,
m u tu al fu nd s, fu nd s other than m u tu al
fu nd s, bond s and other secu rities and
taxable insu rance.
Material assets
Consisting of one’s ow n hom e,
second ary/ holid ay hom e, agricu ltu ral
p rop erty, rental p rop erty, other
p rop erties and tenant-ow ned d w ellings.

Until 1998, the m od el year w as given for
all new ly-registered cars bu t since then it
has not been necessary to give this
inform ation to the Road Traffic Register.
This has resu lted in a car having either a
m od el year or a m anu factu ring year.
When the m od el year is not given, the
m anu factu ring year is u sed instead .
Ill-health
Rate of sickness
The rate of sickness is the total nu m ber of
d ays w ith sickness benefit, d ays w ith
early retirem ent p ension/ tem p orary
d isability allow ance, d ays w ith
rehabilitation allow ance and d ays w ith
p reventative health allow ance, broken
d ow n into the p op u lation aged 16-64
years. The rate of sickness is a
m easu rem ent in d ays, nu m ber of d ays p er
p erson and all d ays are converted to fu ll
d ays. The early retirem ent p ension is
recalcu lated to d ays d u ring one m onth.
Full-tim e early retirem ent p ension gives
30 d ays p er m onth, half-tim e early
retirem ent p ension gives 15 d ays, and so
on.
N ote that the em p loyer p aid the first 14
d ays of every p eriod of sick leave d u ring
2005. The d ays w ith sickness benefit that
are inclu d ed in the rate of sickness are
only those for w hich sickness benefits are
p aid , after the p eriod w ith sick p ay.
