OIL PAINTING
WATERCOLOR
Oil painting for the beginner and intermediate
painter. The understanding of color is emphasized,
relating color from the tube name to the color wheel,
and giving a foundation for color theory. This
simplification of tube names to the related basic
color will avoid the confusion that many novice
painters experience. This leads to better color
mixing, understanding of the painting process, and
therefore is a step toward improved painting skills.
Learn the techniques of transparent watercolor and
using different papers while emphasizing the use
and knowledge of color. Includes discussions of
other water-based mediums, such as gouache,
acrylic and airbrush, as well as framing of the
finished painting.

VISUAL JOURNALING
This class begins where scrapbooking leaves off.
Students will use a variety of materials and
processes to communicate a personal narrative,
including a digital camera, document scanner,
image editing software, pigment, found objects,
memorabilia and handwriting. Both digital and hand
cutting and pasting montage techniques will be
employed. The course will be structured as a series
of weekly “page” assignments which will culminate
in the assembly of an artist’s book. Some
knowledge of using a digital camera and basic
image editing software would be helpful.
OIL PAINTING FOR BEGINNERS
A painting experience for the first-time painter or for
one who long ago enjoyed the exhilaration of selfexpression through oil painting but has not made
time to practice it in years. The instructor will
demonstrate on the first night of class and provide a
suggested list of supplies and where to purchase
them for subsequent classes.

ARAN KNITTING
Learn to make that intricate-looking Aran fisherman
knit sweater you never thought possible! If you can
knit and purl, you are already on your way to
making a beautiful sweater. Students will become
familiar with Aran knitting techniques by completing
a baby- or child-size sweater and then progress to
an adult version of their own choosing. Bring size 7
knitting needles (straight or circular), two 3 1/2- to
4-ounce skeins of machine washable worsted
weight yarn, stitch markers, cable needle and a
size F crochet hook.
This course is intended for the beginner with an
interest in the creative use of black-and-white and
color photography. Learn the techniques you need
to communicate with your camera and learn to take
strong, effective photographs. Using your own
camera with computer equipment at Braintree High
School, we will photograph in class; learn
fundamental equivalents to darkroom manipulations
through software; consider other means of acquiring
images; and investigate methods for storing and
managing files.
Maureen O’Reilly has been a student and collector
of Aran patterns since becoming intrigued with Aran
sweaters after a visit to the West coast of Ireland in
the seventies. She is also an experienced
seamstress who has taught home decoration

The Vietnam Conflict ended for the United States in
1975. In the 30 years since, its significance has
been analyzed and reanalyzed as historians
continue to chronicle the conflict and its aftermath.
This four-session class promises a stimulating
discussion of various topics, including a brief
history of the land and American involvement in the
conflict. What were the lessons of Vietnam? Why
was our military force unable to defeat a “peasant
army”? How have movies from the late 1960s
onward shaped our perceptions of those events?
How has our Vietnam experience shaped our
foreign policy since the 1970s?

REVERSE MORTGAGE WORKSHOP
MAXIMIZE YOUR COLLEGE
FINANCIAL AID
This workshop will discuss what a reverse mortgage
is, what programs are currently available, who
qualifies for this type of mortgage and what properties are eligible. These questions and more will be
answered: How much money can I receive? How is
the money taxed? How long does the process
take? Can I still do a reverse mortgage if my home
is in foreclosure? How long will the money last?
When do I have to pay the loan back? Does the
bank take over my home? What happens to my
Social Security or Medicare if I take out a reverse
mortgage? Do my children have any liability?
This one-night workshop is a must for all parents of
college-bound high school students, including
freshmen and sophomores. We will demystify the
college financial aid process and teach you how to
access the more than $90 billion in financial aid
dollars, monies that are available even to “high
income” families and business owners. Strategies
will be presented that will help you protect your
assets by maximizing your eligibility for aid,
effectively lowering your college costs. You will
learn the optimum time to set the strategies in
place (hint, best before junior year) and why if you
wait until the financial aid deadline to file your
forms, you may miss out on the full amount of aid
you qualify for. You will also learn how to protect the
equity in your home and enhance your retirement
savings as you educate your child. Bring a calculator and a basic knowledge of your income, taxes
and assets. A free comprehensive analysis will be
provided for those attending the class.

SAT ENGLISH
The SAT exam is a comprehensive test comprised
of objective questions designed to measure a high
school student's ability to succeed in college work.
The math questions test students' ability to solve
word problems and questions involving arithmetic,
algebra, and geometry. This course will include
advice on exam-taking techniques.
The newly revised examination features a critical
reading section which tests a student's vocabulary,
verbal understanding and reading comprehension
through sentence-completion questions and
passage-based readings taken from different fields.
Also included is a writing section which measures a
student's ability to effectively communicate ideas
clearly.
SAT MATH 550
SAT ENGLISH 550
For those students who wish to raise their score
above a previously reached 550, this advanced
class will concentrate on plain and solid geometry,
word problems, probability, and some aspects of
Algebra II.
For students with PSAT scores of 550 or better, this
prep course will push their next exam total higher.
The vocabulary and verbal skills of the student are
already substantial and reading comprehension
ability is of high quality. Class time will focus on
more precision time testing, varying sequence of
testing, exposure to more difficult reading
comprehension segments, evaluation of scores, and
analysis of personal weak areas.
