JOHN THE BAPTIST CATHOLIC SCHOOL FULLY ACCREDITED BY NAAS (NORTHWEST ASSOCIATION OF ACCREDITED SCHOOLS) 10956 S.E. 25th Avenue Phone: 503-654-0200 Milwaukie, Oregon 97222 Fax: 503-654-8419 Volume 11, Issue 35 www.sjbcatholicschool.org A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL It’s been eight long years --- eight, since SJB has had the Cougar band march in the Junior Rose Festival Parade. SJB Band Director, Mr. Kinkley, led the Cougar Marching Band on a gorgeous day along the parade route playing, “Cougarismo”…composed by Mr. K. Here is: “We’re Saint John the Baptist, where everything’s cool. At Saint John the Baptist we’re true to our school. We’ve got Cougarismo from head to our toes. And we’ll keep a marchin’ with Cougarismo. That’s why we hail to SJB! Huh! Go Cougars! And so we hail to SJB! Huh! Go Cougars! As another highly successful Cougar school year comes to an end, we are busy making preparations to launch into the 2013-2014 school year. Beginning in the fall, middle school students will have the opportunity to choose from the following electives: Art, Band, Choir, Drama/Speech, HTML Web Design, Student Leadership, and Yearbook. Expect more information from your child’s homeroom teacher outlining these exciting and enriching electives. Also for next year, SJB will no longer be using the school management software, MyStudentsProgress.com. Both faculty and parents expressed concerns about how cumbersome the system is to work with. Instead, after researching several venders, we have unanimously elected to move to a much more user-friendly program called, SchoolSpeak. This new school management program offers many more dynamic features that include: homework, grade book, announcements, emails, volunteer sign-up, electronic forms, online ordering and payments, and much more. Please visit www.schoolspeak.com for a sneak preview. Further information about SchoolSpeak will be coming your way in the near future. Lastly, we are pleased to welcome three new faculty members to SJB: Grace Butler (library/media specialist), Jennifer Fargo (middle school language arts and 7th grade homeroom teacher), and John Payne (middle school religion teacher). Welcome aboard! A CALL TO ALL VOLUNTEERS: Tomorrow (Saturday) we will be prepping our playground for the removal and installation of new playground equipment. We are in need of twelve or more volunteers to help dig a small trench (6” deep by 4” wide) for silt fencing that will run along the fence line on the south and east sides of the playground. Remember, we will begin at 9 am…and please bring a shovel. We can knock this out in no time if we have enough Cougar power. Thank you for supporting YOUR St. John the Baptist Catholic School! He and his disciples entered a town called Nain, where they saw the funeral procession of a man who had died. This man was the only son of his mother, who was a widow. Jesus was very sad when he saw this and told the mother not to weep. He then touched the coffin and said, “Young man, I tell you, arise!” And at these words the young man sat up and began to talk. This amazing story quickly spread throughout Judea and the surrounding area. What is a miracle? Do you believe that miracles can still happen in our world? Why or why not?
