GEOGRAPHY STD V Frigid Zone 1. Where are the Frigid Zones located? Location of the Frigid Zone: Northern hemisphere – between Arctic Circle and North Pole Southern hemisphere : Between Antarctic Circle and South Pole 2. Name any two areas that lie in each of the hemispheres of the Frigid Zone. Areas of the Frigid Zone: Northern Hemisphere - Northern Canada, Alaska, Northern Russia, Northern Scandinavia Southern Hemisphere – Antarctica 3. Describe briefly the climate of the Frigid Zone. The climate of the frigid zone is as follows: a It is the coldest place on the Earth. b.Strong cold winds and blizzards(snow storms) blow in this region. c.They have short summers and very long winters .It is during the short summers that snow melts in small stretches . 4. Give the reasons why this region has six months of day and night. The earth orbits around the sun.during this period when the Northern hemisphere is tilted Towards the sun in June the North pole receives daylight for six months .At this point of time The South Pole which is tilted away from the sun experiences six months of darkness. 5. (i) What is the special name given to the vegetation found in the Frigid zone? Tundra Vegetation. It consists of small stunted plants ,mosses and lichen. (ii)Why do the Polar Regions have no vegetation? Polar Regions do not have any vegetation because it is always frozen here. 1 6. Describe the animal life of the frigid zone in the northern hemisphere. i. The frigid zone of the northern hemisphere has both land and sea animals as well as many insects. ii. Polar bears , reindeer, seals, hares, Arctic fox and the ground squirrel are some animals that live here. iii. There are no reptiles here. iv. Some animals feed on the mosses and other tundra vegetation like the polar bears and Arctic fox are carnivores. POLAR BEAR ARCTIC FOX SEAL REINDEER 7. In what ways are the animals in the southern hemispheres different? i. Animals of the southern hemisphere are different because there are no land animals here. ii. The mammals too are all sea animals. iii. This is because no food can be found on Antarctica so animals have to depend on the sea for their food. iv. Even penguins that live on the land, have to go to the sea for their food. 2 8. Who are the people who live in this zone? Which areas do they live in? INNUITS SLEDGES HARPOONS a.Who are the peolpe shown in the above picture? Tribes who live in the Frigid cold regions-Alaska, North Canada and Northern Russia. b.What is their chief occupation? Hunting or fishing is their main occupation. c. Why is the reindeer a very useful animal to the Eskimos ? Reindeers are a source of meat and milk . d. Draw a comparison in the life of the tribes in earlier times and now at present EARLIER AT PRESENT They led nomadic life. They lead settled life. They used weapons like harpoons. Now they use guns as weapons They lived in tents. Now they live in houses made of wood. Theu used sledges driven by reindeers for Now they move in snow mobiles transport. 3 9. Why do the scientists go to the Antarctic region? Scientists go to Antarctica to study weather and natural resources of the region. 10. What are the dangers that human beings face due to this zone getting warmer? The dangers that human beings face due to warmer temperatures are: i. Melting ice releases water into the seas and oceans which makes their levels rise. This can make low-lying land areas disappear. ii. When the ice melts, poisonous gases that have been trapped in the ice are released into the atmosphere. iii. Animals that belong to this region are adapted to live in cold areas. If the region gets warmer, their existence is threatened. 4
