Lessons
from Jonah
This week I have included
an article written by Bonnie
McMaken that I would like to
share.
I encourage all members of our
community to open their bibles this week and read
through the very short chapters of Jonah.
Jonah needed to expand his heart
toward others—we do too.
Bonnie McMaken
Dr. Seuss’s The Grinch is a staple
villain in children’s literature. This ugly
green miser loathes everyone and
everything except his faithful dog, Max.
His hate stems from his dysfunctional
heart that is “two sizes too small,” and
as a consequence he is simply unable
to let any love inside.
The Grinch is a humorous and whimsical character,
so it’s easy to laugh at Seuss’s over-the-top
description. However, we have all let our “inner
Grinch” out of hiding, and when we see glimpses of
this character in ourselves, it’s not so funny.
The good news is that we are not alone in our frail,
human state. The Bible is full of men and women
who, despite their best efforts, suffer from a chronic
lack of love.
Jonah is one of the most striking examples of a heart
in need of expansion. God calls, Jonah runs.
He survives not only being thrown into the raging
ocean but being swallowed whole by a large fish and
housed in its belly for three days. While in the fish,
Jonah prays eloquently to the Lord, thanking him
for his hand of safety. After the three days are up,
the fish promptly vomits Jonah back onto dry land
unscathed.
Faith Lutheran College
Then, Jonah finally does what the Lord asks: He
travels to Nineveh, an enemy of the Israelites, to
proclaim the Lord’s judgment. The Ninevites almost
immediately repent and are shown mercy by the Lord.
The book ends with Jonah brooding over Nineveh,
angry with God for the grace he gave to the people
Jonah so despises.
On the surface, Jonah seems to be about a
melodramatic and fearful man who begrudgingly
obeys God’s will and—in a surprising narrative twist—
is actually angry when he is successful at his task.
To truly understand Jonah’s bitterness and fear,
however, it’s important we understand what Jonah is
facing when God tells him to go to Nineveh.
During this time period, the Ninevites were not only
enemies of the Israelites but had violently oppressed
the nation of Israel. God’s command for Jonah,
therefore, is not just unreasonable. It’s terrifying—and
seemingly impossible.
These cultural realities are most likely a huge part
of why Jonah runs from God’s will. He is naturally
terrified of the enemy. Maybe he’s also afraid of
failure. Proclaiming God’s judgment to an enemy
nation is a daunting task. Perhaps Jonah figures the
odds of the Ninevites heeding God’s command are
too small for him to risk his life and dignity.
At the core of Jonah’s trepidation, though, there is
something even deeper at work: fear of triumph.
Jonah knows that if he succeeds at winning over
the Ninevites to the Lord, they will be shown mercy.
That’s just the kind of God Jonah serves: He shows
his abundant grace to undeserving people. Jonah, on
the other hand, wants his enemies to suffer.
Pastor Tim Keller says before Jonah confronts
the idolatry of the Ninevites, he must first confront
the idolatry in his own heart. Jonah, instead of
confronting his idolatry, runs from it. In fact, he runs
from the very “presence of the Lord” (Jonah 1:3).
Even if Jonah doesn’t confront his own idolatry in the
beginning of the book, he certainly seems to realize
his dislike is there all along. In the beginning of
chapter 4 he gives the Lord a seething “I-told-you-so”
speech: “Didn’t I say before I left home that you would
do this, LORD? That is why I ran away to Tarshish!
I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate
God, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.
You are eager to turn back from destroying people.”
Jonah understands the Lord’s character, his merciful
history. He knows the Lord has been faithful to the
Israelites and to him as an individual. Chapter 2
is an example of Jonah’s knowledge. He has the
right things to say, and he crafts an eloquent prayer
thanking God for his steadfast provision. But his heart
is small. He does not want God to extend the same
love to his enemies.
Like Jonah, we often have the appropriate and
religious words, and even the actions to match those
words. But our hearts can be hard, unwilling to
extend God’s love to others.
Only God can expand our small, fragile hearts.
He has given us his grace through the death and
resurrection of his son, Jesus. Because of Christ
working in us, our capacity to love others—even our
enemies—increases. In fact, God promises this to his
people:

“I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new
spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn
heart and give you a tender, responsive heart”
(Ezekiel 36:26).
When we say “yes” to God and his love for all
people, he will stretch our hearts. This expansion is
unpleasant at times, especially when he asks us to
love people who make us uncomfortable or who have
hurt us, but the challenge will bring our hearts closer
to the heart of God.

As I mentioned in my opening paragraph, I have read
this article so many times and felt great affinity for
what it is was saying to me. I would also hope that
each of you cannot only relate to it, but to see how
these ideas relate to our processes of restorative
practices here at Faith.
We all need to look at the way we are acting and
what prejudices and negative reactions we carry
within us. Jonah is a part of each of us and we need
to identify when we too are acting and holding on
to unreasonable beliefs about others. In this age of
instant communication we so easily say and share
comments that are hurtful and uncaring. If we can all
can seek out God’s will and listen to his voice often
delivered through others, then maybe instead of
running, sometimes we can stand tall and feel proud
of ourselves.
Seek out God’s will in all you do.
Do all the good you can,
By all the means you can,
In all the ways you can,
In all the places you can,
At all the times you can,
To all the people you can,
As long as ever you can.
Prayer for this week
God of love and of life, let us take time to look
deep within ourselves and discover the gifts you
have blessed us with. May we take the time to
direct our lives in a way that best uses our own
unique combination of gifts. May our education
help us discover where our strengths and
interests lie. May our faith guide us in realizing
our gifts. May we always be open to the direction
of the Spirit and never forget the love you have
for each of us.
Give us, O Lord, the perception we need to look
within ourselves and discover the beauty and
gifts we possess. Give us the courage to show
others the talents they have. Help us serve others
in the community and in so doing build up your
kingdom. We ask this through Jesus, our Lord.
Amen.
Yours in Faith

Women in Science
Conference
On Friday and Saturday the 8th and 9th of May Billie
Carkeet, Siobhan Laing, Kayla Leigh, Jenny Baek
and Elsa Matthias went to the Women in Science
Conference hosted by St Aidan’s Girls School in
Brisbane.
There were three keynote speakers and then we each
got to listen to three other speakers of our choice.
The first keynote speaker was Jenny Martin. She is a
protein crystallographer. This means she uses x-rays
and crystals to investigate the chemical make-up of
proteins. From this structure, she and her team are
developing a drug that will replace antibacterial drugs.
This drug should overcome bacterial diseases without
the body developing a resistance to the drug. Jenny
spoke in a very personable manner and was able to
bring her research down to a level where everyone in
the room could understand her. It was really interesting
to learn not only about her research but also to hear
about the history of her field of research also.
Astrophysist, Tamara Davis was our second keynote
speaker. It was absolutely mind blowing to touch even
just the surface of her field of work. She discussed
how she balances her sporting commitments with her
research and her journey to her career in the field
of astronomy. The one and a half hour presentation
featured the LHC – which is a particle collider located
in Europe. This was the first most of us had even
heard of this machine, and she spoke of many other
present-day machines that make her work so much
easier such as the VLT or the Very Large Telescope.
The last key note speaker was Dr. Eve McDonaldMadden, a mathematical ecologist. Dr Eve opened
my mind to a field of science I never knew existed.
Her presentation included some of her current and
past projects involving
some of the world’s
most exotic animals
and calculating their
population, using formulas
I had never even heard
of. She was amazing,
and it made me really
question what I want to
do in my future. Following her presentation she also
spoke with me about the steps to pursue a career in
her field.
We also got the chance to listen to many other
speakers who also worked in many amazing fields
such as chemical, biological, aeronautical and
mechanical engineering, pharmacy, surgery, and
meteorology. There were many other available
sessions, too many to list here.
We loved every minute and learnt so much not just
about career opportunities in science but also about
the path leading to these careers. It was an amazing
weekend.
