On the Road with the Spiders
During the past seven seasons, the University of Richmond women’s
basketball team has traveled extensively throughout the continental
United States. In addition, the Spiders have journeyed overseas to play.
In this span, Richmond has played games in 13 states, plus the District
of Columbia, and made three trips abroad.
In 2001, the Spiders spent six
days in St. Thomas while
competing in the U.S. Virgin
Islands Paradise Jam. During
the summer of 2000, Richmond
played exhibition games in both
France and England during a
ten-day excursion. In addition
to their on-court action, the
Spiders took time to visit
historical sites including the
Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame
Cathedral and Kensington
Palace.

Community Service
Richmond head coach Joanne Boyle believes
there is more to a player’s college basketball
experience than simply achieving on the
court. As a part of her philosophy, Boyle’s
players actively participate in community
service projects in the Richmond area.
Each team member chooses one project and
is required to volunteer at least one hour a
week at that location. Last season players
worked with a variety of organizations,
including the Boys and Girls Club of
Richmond, the YMCA, Saint Joseph’s Home
for the Elderly and the Richmond Midnight
Basketball League.
In addition, the Spiders are involved with
the GWIS (Girls/Women in Sports) program, conducting assemblies at local elementary and middle schools. As positive
role models, Richmond players share
their experiences with students, often
talking about the hard work and perseverance that is necessary to achieve
one’s goals.
The team also participates in a number of group service projects throughout the year.
Immersing themselves in community service allows the Richmond
Women’s Basketball Team to
become a positive influence in the
community, while simultaneously
giving them a chance to have fun
with those they are helping.
Richmond women’s basketball player Ebony Tanner speaks to students as part of the Spiders’ involvement with GWIS.
