When dealing with aging elders’ difficult behaviors, we will support these types of techniques in place of antipsychotic medications. This presentation will explore the sources of difficulties providing a peaceful, quality of life for our aging elders, both at home and in aging services communities. The principles presented will enable staff to reduce antipsychotic medications while providing care. One of the guiding principles is learning to see and honor their reality. Also, helping them overcome decades of programming by our culture to "go quietly into the night" will be discussed; instead helping them re-discover a sense of purpose and meaning through helping others at whatever level they can. Learning ObjectiveObjectives By the completion of the presentation, attendees will: Explore the sources of difficulties providing a peaceful, quality of life for our aging elders, both at home and in aging services communities. Illuminate the need for caregivers to see and honor elders' realities. Discuss ways to help elders overcome decades of programming by our culture to "go quietly into the night"; instead helping them re-discover a sense of purpose and meaning through helping others at whatever level they can. Identify the unmet needs behind so-called "behaviors", and find an approach that works with the elder to meet that need, rather than try to bring about compliance.
