Interactive non-rigid registration

Interactive non-rigid registration
Abstract
Image registration is the process of transforming images into the same coordinate system. In a
medical setting, volume registration is often required to track treatment effects over time or to combine
information from different modalities. RegistrationShop was developed to improve and ease the
process of volume registration using 3D visualizations and intuitive interactive tools. It supports several
basic visualizations of 3D volumetric data. Interactive rigid and non-rigid transformation tools can be
used to manipulate the volumes and immediate visual feedback for all rigid transformation tools allow
the user to examine the current registration result in real-time.
Clinical acceptance of deformable registration has so far been hindered by lack of trust in the
registration results. Clinicians are not provided with insight into the deformations that were induced by
the registration, and secondly it is difficult to correct for mistakes.
Context
This project is part of an ongoing research collaboration between the Leiden University Medical Center
(dr. Staring), and the TU Delft (dr. Vilanova, ir. Smit). This thesis project is a follow-up to the
RegistrationShop thesis project:

Assignment
In this project, you will be working on finding new ways of visualizing and interacting with non-rigid
registrations. The idea is to show the users in an intuitive way which parts of the volumes are
deformed most by the registration process, in what way they are deformed and how reliable the result
is. This could be performed by visualization of the deformation field and/or the Jacobian map that is
derived from it. We will additionally investigate methods to improve the final result of the registration by
introducing user input in the registration pipeline.
Requirements
Good programming skills and familiarity with areas related to image processing and visualization.
Experience with VTK and elastix is an advantage.
