Chew Your Food Better!

your food!” Most of us chew and swallow our food way too fast. Inadequate chewing will shortchange our nutrition because digestion starts
in our mouth. The chewing process (mastication) is actually an extremely important step in digestion, making it easier for your intestines
to absorb nutrients from food particles as they pass through.
How Many Chews Is Enough?
In terms of optimal number of chews, recommendations are all over
the board. Most studies seem to top out at 40 chews per bite. However, Horace Fletcher, aka "The Great Masticator" and founder of the
chewing movement (if you can call it that), preached 100 chews per
bite. This may be excessive for most people, but there's something to
be said for taking your time and chewing as long as you're comfortably
able. I think it makes sense to not obsess over the number of
chews, but simply chew until your food liquefies and loses all texture.
Benefits Of Chewing Your Food:
•
Aids your digestion. When we take large bites of food and swallow them down without chewing we have digestion problems like bloating, gas, heartburn, and burping etc. The more we
chew, the better our food will be broken down (with the help of digestive enzymes released
in our mouth) prior to entering our stomach. Better digestion will give us increased energy.
“Chew before you swallow, stomachs don’t have teeth.”
•
Boost nutrient absorption. We can eat the best nutrient dense, healthy, and organic foods
available, but if we don’t chew them well they won’t be digested and metabolized very efficiently.
•
Control your weight. When you chew your food more consciously, you’ll naturally slow down
how quickly you are eating. When you slow down your eating, you allow yourself the chance
to be aware of your hunger and satiety cues, which can decrease your risk of overeating.
•
Appreciate your food. When you slow down your eating to mindfully chew, you also allow
yourself the time to truly appreciate the meal. Allow yourself the chance to appreciate the
fact that you have food on your plate—that the food is God-given and nourishing. Maybe we
should think about the process the food has gone through from its origin to our plate. Being
totally thankful for God’s provisions. Fostering an environment that emphasizes food appreciation instead of deprivation is the foundation of a healthy relationship with food.

Jill’s Staff Favorite: Almond Meal/Flour
A high-fat food that's good for your health? That's not an oxymoron, its almonds. Almonds are
high in monounsaturated fats, the same type of health-promoting fats as are found in olive oil,
which have been associated with reduced risk of heart disease. In addition to healthy fats and
vitamin E, a quarter-cup of almonds contains 62 mg. of magnesium plus 162 mg. of potassium.
Almond flour is simply skinless, blanched almonds that have been ground. Looking for an alternative flour for baked goods? Almond flour is not only ultra versatile and easy to work with, it is
GLUTEN FREE, VEGAN, PALEO, LOW CARB, HIGH PROTEIN, HIGH FIBER, and DELICIOUS! Almond flour is also appropriate for the Specific Carbohydrate Diet. It does not impart a particularly “almond” flavor to the baked goods and it produces a satisfying firm, but very moist texture. Because almonds are high in healthful fats, recipes require much lower quantities of other
added fat. Try almond flour cookies, muffins, or cakes. I have even made my own pizza crust using almond flour!
You can find Bob’s Red Mill Almond Flour in one pound packages in our gluten-free
grocery aisle, or choose your own quantity from our bulk bin section. We also carry
Paleo and Gluten Free cookbooks loaded with ideas for baking with almond flour in
our book section. You will find this healthy alternative flour produces superior results! -Jill
