Sorrento Cathedral is dedicated to the Saints Phillip and James and it is said to be risen on the ruins of an ancient Temple dedicated to Jupiter. The Church houses paintings by artists from the Neapolitan school of the 1700s, an archbishops throne in fine marbles (1573) and a wooden marquetry work of Sorrentine craftsmen of the beginning of the 19th century. In the last chapel on the left an important nativity scene of the Neapolitan tradition is kept. The poet Torquato Tasso, the best known citizen of the town, was baptized in the church's baptistery. DOMINOVA SEAT This is the only remaining testimony of the old noble seats and dates to the XVI century. The 17th century cupola is formed by green and yellow maiolica roof-tiles. THE OLD WALLS A part of the Greek defensive wall still remaining is under the road at the Porta Parsano Nuova and can be viewed close to the same door. CLOISTER A few meters from Piazza Sant’Antonino, where the Basilica dedicated to the patron saint of Sorrento stands, in Piazza Francesco Saverio Gargiulo – in the vicinity of the Villa Comunale – rises a historic triptych set in a volcanic tuff wall known around the Peninsula Area as “conventual complex of San Francesco d’Assisi”. The elements which characterize the triptych are: the Church, the Monastery and the Cloister. During the summer period, the Cloister is transformed and becomes the background for works of art exhibitions and of the Sorrentine Musical Summer, an extraordinary continuation of appointments bound to music with the presence of artists coming from all over the world. POMPEII & HERCULANEUM POMPEII& HERCULANEUM FULL DAY Full day guided excursion by coach, to the famous archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Pompeii holds an intense fascination for visitors today. Following the eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 A.D., Pompeii lay buried and forgotten for hundreds of years. The town is high on the list of the Wonders of the World and the excavations begun in the 18th Century are still being carried out today. Our guide will take you slowly through some of the ancient streets of Pompeii where you can see Baths, Forums and Villas built by the prosperous Romans in the year 80 B.C. Marvel at the fabulously preserved Frescos which adorned the walls and floors of the Villas. When the catastrophe of 79 A.D. occurred Herculaneum was submerged under a torrent of mud and lava that hardened into a soft tufa (a kind of course rock) that preserved many of the wooden parts of houses and household objects which can be seen today. This is the ideal excursion to take while staying in Sorrento. It includes the following itinerary: Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. The Amalfi coast is for sure one of the most striking sceneries existing in southern Italy, and apart from the stunning views one can enjoy all along the drive, it is the road itself to be a real challenge to the steep rocky cliffs overlooking the magnificent emerald colours of the Tyrrhenian sea. When you walk through the historical centre in Positano, you are overwhelmed by the amount of shops selling any sort of stuff, the lemon liqueurs, the candles, the pictures and everywhere, even hanging over balconies the most incredible colours of linen clothes locally called “Moda Positano”. Historically, for sure, the most important town of the area, for the remarkable past as one of the 4 Maritime Republic, and for some of the oldest paper factories in our country; motherland of the presumed inventor of the sea compass, etc. What is left of that glorious past is for sure the most important monument in town, the Duomo, with an impressive façade decorated with gorgeous mosaics at the top and a Moorish lower part. Leaving the coast the drive continues to the top of the mountains to Ravello, situated at 1100 feet above the sea level, the views of the coast below are for sure the most breath-taking scenery. The town of Ravello is for sure the best place where to leave the crowds and where to enjoy the quiet of a village, where most of the historical centre is still untamed, and still recalling the magnificence of the grand private residences once belonging to the most important local noble families. The most famous of them is opened to the public “villa Rufolo”, dating back to 11th century, belonged to the family with the same name and in the 19th century sheltered Richard Wagner, who was inspired by the beauty of its gardens and the views for the composition of the 2nd act of its Parsifal.
