Camilla has lived in the ward for 14 years, working until recently at nearby Stockport College and is now working as a chef. Camilla Luff Local Election Candidate Camilla Luff has been selected as the Green candidate for Edgeley & Greens act on transport Greens are committed to affordable public transport, run efficiently. Nationally, Green MP Caroline Lucas is leading the way. Having introduced a bill in parliament, which aims to bring rail back into public ownership Caroline said: “ Britain was once a world leader in transport thanks to our hugely successful railways but today’s privatised system – characterised by poor services and some of the most expensive fares in Europe – is ripping off passengers, harming the economy and failing the environment.” A Green government would cut rail and bus fares by 10%, funded by scrapping many new roads. Locally, Stockport Greens joined forces in January with campaigners handing out leaflets at rail stations against fare increases. Camilla says; “I was initially attracted to the Green Party because it is committed to strong environmental policies and enabling a fair and balanced society. I would like to implement such changes for the better for all in Edgeley and Cheadle Heath”. http://stockport.greenparty.org.uk Greens act on speeding traffic Several people have told us about problems with speeding traffic in their area. Stockport Council plans to introduce 20mph zones in much of Edgeley and Cheadle Heath as part of the Town Centre Access Plan. We have passed on your comments during the Council’s consultation. Green Party Councillors in Norwich, Brighton, Leicester and elsewhere have been responsible for the successful introduction of similar schemes, but enforcement is key, so we will monitor closely how the Council implements this. Residents on Bloom Street and many other streets in Edgeley have told us about speeding traffic Green action in brief Our Edgeley team has been busy with stalls and surveys. One issue you have told us about is dog fouling unpleasant to see, smell, and a health risk. Some charities including the RSPCA have raised concerns about the harmful effect sky lanterns can have on wildlife and farm animals. Now, thanks to persistent campaigning by the Green Party, Stockport Council has agreed to a policy of banning sky lantern and organised balloon releases from it’s land. Keep our NHS publicly owned Greens believe in a publicly owned and publicly run NHS, opposing privatisation – a process started by Labour and continued by the coalition government. Green MP Caroline Lucas was the first MP to support the NHS Reinstatement Bill (http:// www.nhsbill2015.org), which is gaining support. Green Party Leader Natalie Bennett said: “The two key principles in the NHS Reinstatement Bill, the removal of the market mechanism and the return/ maintenance of public ownership and operation of NHS services and facilities, are critical to the future of our wonderful, effective NHS. The importation of US companies and ideas – from a country where healthcare costs twice the percentage of GDP as it does here, with poorer results – has to be resisted at every turn. The profit motive has no place in healthcare.” Greens are involved in Stockport NHS Watch (http:// stockportnhswatch.co.uk/), which is opposing attempts to privatise or reduce services locally. Also,The Green Party is against the TTIP; the proposed trade deal between Europe and the USA, which would have a detrimental impact on the NHS and our national businesses. Get involved!
