I am pleased to introduce Tu Nidito’s 2009 Annual Report. Last year was undoubtedly a challenging
one for our community, which is why all of us at Tu Nidito are grateful for the continued support we
receive. On behalf of all of the children and families served by Tu Nidito, Southern Arizona’s “little nest”
for children impacted by serious illness and grief, I thank Tucsonans for their generosity. Because of
your commitment with your time, talent, and financial support, Tu Nidito was able to continue
providing its much needed support programs to everyone who needs us:
Children, teens, and families who are grieving the death of a loved one.
Children and teens who are diagnosed with a serious medical condition and their families.
Children who have a parent diagnosed with cancer and their families.
Young adults who are grieving the death of a loved one.
At Tu Nidito we strive to grow our support offerings to the Tucson community. None of this would
be possible without our community partnerships with area hospitals, school districts, universities and
other organizations who continue to provide referrals and volunteers. I am pleased to share with you
just a few of our accomplishments in 2009:
We have more than 220 active volunteers in all of our programs who donated more
than 9,000 hours of their time.
We experienced a 33% growth in the number of children in our grief support program.
The Children with a Parent with Cancer program grew by 90% from 2008 to 2009. Nineteen
families and 39 children were able to interact with their peers and learn how to cope with a
devastating diagnosis. Programs of this kind were unavailable until Tu Nidito filled the need.
Tu Nidito helped 223 families through three support programs for children with a serious
medical condition.
More than 91% of every dollar donated to Tu Nidito went to support services that directly
benefitted children and their families.
While we are proud of the continued growth of our programs, we also care about the quality of them.
Our 2009 evaluations indicate that 90% of children reported Tu Nidito’s grief support program
improved their ability to function and integrate their grief in their daily lives, allowing them to
positively participate in their school, home and daily life activities.
That is what we aim to do here at Tu Nidito: help children and their families improve their lives despite
the challenges they face. As I reflect on last year, I am grateful to our volunteers, donors, staff and
Board of Directors for your help, commitment, and support. Thank you for all that you do. You are
improving the lives of children in Tucson during the most difficult of times.

Tu Nidito is the only organization of its kind in Southern Arizona. There is no other
agency that provides ongoing support to children whose lives have been
impacted by serious illness or grief. We provide our free services to children and
their families through seven support programs.
Grief Support
Children to Children Grief Support for Children and Families
Tu Nidito offers ongoing support groups for children and teenagers who are grieving the death of a loved
one. We provide a safe place where grieving children can share their loss experiences in a caring,
supportive environment. Families meet twice a month to take part in age-appropriate support and
activities for children ages 3 ½- 18 years of age. Each evening consists of age specific children’s groups and
concurrent adult groups and are facilitated by trained volunteers and coordinated by a staff member.

One-on-One Support
Tu Nidito provides intensive home, hospital, and community-based support for children diagnosed
with a life-threatening illness. Services are designed to assist each family member through the
difficulty and stress of diagnosis, change in prognosis, and course of treatment. Masters Level Social
Workers, Case Managers, and highly trained volunteers provide individualized support to the seriously
ill child, their siblings, and their families.

Courage Beads
Tu Nidito’s Courage Beads program is designed to document and honor the journey children take
when they are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. The bead program allows children to tell their
story using colorful beads as meaningful symbols of the many steps taken throughout their course
of treatment.

For Families Experiencing the Death of Their Child
Tu Nidito continues to stay with families in the event their child’s life-threatening illness progresses.
Our pediatric professionals assist families in navigating the devastation of a failing prognosis, and when
appropriate offer age-specific support for the diagnosed child to work through the dying process.
Tu Nidito professionals remain present with the family into the most difficult time imaginable,
including the loss of their child, and continue to provide individualized bereavement services to all
family members for a minimum of 18 months.

year, Tu Nidito recognizes five remarkable women for their
contributions to the Tucson Community. On May 16, 2009,
we honored Deanne Gibbons, Beth Walkup, Teena
Sandstrom, Jean Gorman, and Georgeanne Fimbres. The
theme was “Old Hollywood,” featuring celebrity
impersonators of the Rat Pack and Marilyn Monroe.
Every year, the event is a huge success and helps Tu Nidito continue its mission of providing support for
children and their families as they deal with serious illness and death. Thank you to everyone who
sponsored, donated, volunteered, or attended our Remarkable Celebration!
The Tucson Ladies Council’s
Fashion Show is the only event of
its kind in the Tucson community.
For the past five years, Tucsonans
have the opportunity to attend a
high-end fashion show featuring professional models,
all for a great cause. It also gives Tu Nidito children
the chance to strut down the runway! More than 500
fashion and civic-minded community members were in
attendance for last year’s event on September 26, 2009,
both in support of Tu Nidito and to honor the memory
of Cynthia Joy Wool. All of the proceeds from the
Fashion Show benefit Tu Nidito.

El Tour de Tucson
El Tour de Tucson
Riders came out in full-force for the start of the 27th annual El Tour de Tucson,
Saturday, November 21, 2009. More than 8,000 cyclists participated in the 2009
El Tour, raising more than $260,000 for Tu Nidito Children and Family Services. For
the children and families at Tu Nidito, El Tour is much more than a ride. “El Tour is our
livelihood,” said Executive Director Liz McCusker.
Last year marked the second year of
Tu Nidito’s Ride for a Child Program,
giving cyclists the unique opportunity to ride for a
Tu Nidito child. Last year the Ride for a Child program
had a total of 118 cyclists raising more than $104,000
for Tu Nidito.

Our Mission…
The sole mission of Tu Nidito, the Tucson, Arizona 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, is to provide
individual, family and group support through emotional, educational and social services to
children and their families as they deal with serious illness and death.
Our Hi story…
More than 15 years ago, Tu Nidito filled a need in our community by building a successful
nonprofit agency dedicated to supporting children impacted by serious illness and death. Last
year, through programs of individual, family and group support, Tu Nidito cared for 807 children.
Today we remain the only agency in Arizona dedicated to providing a comprehensive continuum
of child-centered care to children whose lives have been impacted by a serious medical condition
or death.
It seems so sensible that children and families would not have to go through these difficult times
alone. But without Tu Nidito, many of our families would. There is no other agency that provides
on-going support to children who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or other loved
one. There is no other agency that provides continued support to children whose parents have
been diagnosed with cancer. There is no other agency that stays with an ill child and their family,
from time of diagnosis, through all of the changes in prognosis and if that child’s illness results in a
death, throughout the grieving process.
