Observe the following guidelines when selecting a site and installing the system: 3.1.1 Humidity Use the Sample Transport only in 10-90% relative humidity levels, non-condensing. Rapid changes in humidity can cause interferences by adding trace moisture absorptions to the spectra. In general, lower humidity levels are preferred. Performance Test is somewhat sensitive to changes in ambient humidity, and the Noise Test may fail under conditions of extreme humidity. 3.1.2 General Environment • Minimize exposure of the monochromator to dust. • Inspect the air filter at least monthly; replace the air filter as required. • Do not place the instrument directly near any HVAC duct. The direct flow of heating or cooling air will cause the instrument to exhibit high noise during Performance Test, and may cause non-reproducible sample spectra. 3.1.3 Vibration • Install the Sample Transport Analyzer where it will not be affected by vibration from grinders, blenders, stirrer, or mixers. • Never permit hammering or other physical impact on the bench top supporting the Sample Transport Analyzer or its computer. 3.1.4 Electrical Power • Power should be a single, separate, stable, transient-free filtered AC circuit. • The circuit should have surge protection. • The power supply is self-switching and provides the correct operating voltage to the instrument. 3.1.5 Placement of the Instrument It is advisable to leave a minimum of 76 mm (3”) around the sides and back for airflow and access space. Leave at least 100-125 mm (4-5 inches) in front for the sample loading. NOTE: Although adverse environmental conditions may not be physically damaging to the instrument, variation in these conditions may cause non-reproducible sample spectra. User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 3:1 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 3.2 Installation Instructions Follow this procedure when attaching a new Reflectance-Only Sample Transport Module to a monochromator. List of Parts: • • • • • • Composite Monochromator with reflectance amplifier installed (A) Reflectance-Only Sample Transport Module (B) Sample Dispenser Baseplate (C) Top Shield (D) Thumb screws, quantity 2 (E) 10-24 X 7/8 bolts, quantity 4 (F) Fig. 3:1 3:2 Assembly User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 1. Fig. 3:2 Attachment User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 3:3 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 6. Look at the back panel of the Transport Module and identify the location of the four individual holes corresponding to the four in the reflectance amplifier (see Fig. 3:2). 7. Secure the Transport Module to the Monochromator by installing a 10-24 X 7/8 " bolt (F) with Phillips (cross-recessed) heads into each of the four holes. 8. If you are using an ISI-Bulk Sample Cell (IH-0390), place the Sample Dispenser Baseplate (C) securely on the benchtop such that the short, offset end extends beyond and below the bench top (see Fig. 3:1). 9. Place the Monochromator/Transport assembly on the benchtop (see Fig. 3:1). 10. Place the Top Shield (D) on the top of theTransport Module such that the long panel is vertical and toward the back. 11. Install and tighten the thumbscrews (E) to secure the Shield to the Transport Module. 12. Connect the power cord to the instrument and turn the power on. The cell carriage will gradually rise to the starting, "home" position, and the indicator light will turn green. If the indicator light flashes red/green, use the "Switch for Manual Movement" (Fig. 3:2) to move the cell holder to the top of the track. Switch the power off, wait ten seconds and switch the power "on". Operation Notes • A sample cell must be fitted into the sample carriage prior to perform diagnostic tests on the Monochromator and Reflectance-Only Transport. Without an appropriate cell in place, room light leaking into the sample compartment will adversely impact instrument response and give unreliable results. • The instrument performance and standardization is dependent on maintaining a consistent scan from the ceramic reference. Take care to keep the ceramic as clean as possible. Clean, oil free compressed air can be used to dust off the ceramic. If a more thorough cleaning is necessary, please contact your Foss product specialist for further instructions and possible re-standardization. • If you need to remove the Reflectance-Only Transport, use the Switch for Manual Carriage Operation to lower the carriage into the module housing, making sure that you can access the 4 mounting bolts that hold the transport module to the reflectance detector. ALWAYS turn off the Monochromator power switch and unplug the power cord before removing or installing the ReflectanceOnly Transport module. 3:4 User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ The Reflectance Only Transport is supplied with a small doorstop tab installed in the sample carriage (Fig. 3:3). This doorstop is designed to be used when analyzing samples using the ISI quarter cups. Fig. 3:3 The tab is installed by loosening the thumbscrew until the end of the screw is flush with the inside of the sample carriage (Fig. 3:4). Hold the doorstop in position as shown in the figure and tighten the thumbscrew to hold it securely in place. When the installation is complete, the doorstop will hold the dump door in a proper horizontal position. When using the natural products cell or coarse granular cell, remove the tab and retain for future use, Fig. 3:4 User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 3:5 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 3:6 User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 4 Maintenance It is important to keep the instrument clean and in good repair. This section covers key maintenance items. 4.1 Lamp Replacement Lamp replacement is best performed by turning the instrument on its side. This permits easy access to the lamp. This position provides for better work illumination in most lab settings. Before starting, turn off power to the instrument and remove the AC power cable. Allow the instrument to cool for 10-15 minutes. 1. Remove the two (2) thumbscrews that hold the sample chamber to the Sample Transport Module. Lift the sample chamber off and set it aside. Place the two thumbscrews into the holes in the Sample Transport, if desired, to avoid loss. Do not thread these screws into the holes more than a few turns. Fig. 4:1 2. Carefully turn the instrument onto its side, as shown. Note that this instrument has feet mounted on the right side, as it is used with multiple modules. If your instrument does not have rubber feet, lay it gently onto a towel, mat or resilient surface to avoid marring the finish. Fig. 4:2 User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 4:1 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 3. Use a #2 Phillips screwdriver to remove the four (4) #10-32 screws that hold the top cover on the instrument. Fig. 4:3 4. Carefully lift the cover and locate the multi-colored ribbon cable which goes to the operating LED panel. Lift slowly and gently. Note the position of the cable for later re-attachment. Unplug the cable. Set the cover aside. 5. Loosen the terminal screws that secure the lamp wires to the lamp regulator board. (Do not remove the screws!) Slide the lamp terminals out from under the screws. 6. Remove the large thumbscrew that holds the lamp assembly in place. Slide the lamp assembly upward and out of the instrument. Fig. 4:4 4:2 User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 7. Unpack the new lamp and insert the tab into the mating slot of the instrument. Fig. 4:5 8. Insert and tighten the thumbscrew at top of lamp assembly. 9. Insert the lamp leads under the terminals (one under each) and tighten the terminal screws. There is no polarity requirement for connection. 10. Plug the multicolored ribbon cable into the LED board on the outer cover. 11. Carefully reinstall the outer cover, taking care not to pinch the ribbon cable. 12. Install the four (4) #10-32 Phillips-head screws and tighten. 13. Place the instrument back upright. 14. Re-install the sample chamber on top of the Sample Transport Module and tighten the thumbscrews. 15. Re-install the AC power cord and turn on the AC power switch. 16. Allow 30 minutes warm-up, then run Wavelength Linearization and Performance Test to verify operation. (If running in both Reflectance and Transmission Modes, it is necessary to run Wavelength Linearization in each mode.) 17. Order a new spare lamp from your FOSS Distributor. User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 4:3 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 4.2 Fuse Replacement Fuse failure can be caused by power line surges, spikes, or other transients. The instrument operates from a regulated internal DC power supply, and fuse failure is unusual. It is important to always determine the cause of failure prior to fuse replacement, to avoid wasting fuses. Once the cause is determined, proceed as follows: Be sure instrument power is OFF. Remove the AC power cord to gain access to the fuse compartment. 1. Use a small, straight-bladed screwdriver to pry open the fuse door. There is a slot at the top center of the drawer to make this easy. 2. Lift the blown fuse out of the holder. Discard immediately, if blown. If not visibly blown, it may be checked with an ohm meter to verify contact. Fig. 4:6 3. Take a new fuse from the Accessory Kit, and place it into the holder as shown. Use only the correct fuse – do not substitute any other voltage or amperage rating. Type: T5A-250 Fig. 4:7 4:4 User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 4. Push the fuse holder firmly closed. Fig. 4:8 5. Re-install the AC power cord. 6. Turn on AC power. User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 4:5 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 4.3 Air Filter The air filter should be inspected at least once per month, or more often if operating in a dusty environment. Failure to replace a dirty fan filter may result in instrument overheating, and failure of internal components. This may be expensive, if service is required. Always keep the fan filter clean to assure good operation. If the user becomes aware that the fan is operating continuously, this is one sign that the filter should be checked. Regular visual inspection is the best policy. An extra filter is packed with the accessory kit. When the filter requires replacement, follow these steps. The instrument is shown on its side, as in the lamp replacement section. (Fan filter replacement may be performed in either the vertical or horizontal position.) 1. Turn off the instrument and remove the AC power cord. 2. Lift off the filter flange by reaching behind it with a finger, pushing downward slightly, and pulling outward. The filter holder will pop off easily. Fig. 4:9 3. Open the filter housing to reach the filter material. To open, squeeze the side of the square housing (lower part of photo) and separate it from the flanged part of the housing. Fig. 4:10 4:6 User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 4. Lift the screen and remove the filter media. 5. If the screen is dusty, gently clean it with compressed air or a soft brush. (Do not scrub, or the screen material will be damaged.) 6. Install the new filter material, re-install the screen, snap the housing together, and install the whole fan filter assembly back on the monochromator. Be sure it is oriented correctly as shown in the top photo. Fig. 4:11 7. Reinstall the AC power cord, and turn on the power switch. The filter material is reusable. It may be blown clear with clean compressed air. Do not wash with water! User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 4:7 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 4.4 Sample Window The sample window should be kept as clean as possible. Any dust or dirt on the window will degrade the instrument performance, and may cause imprecision in measurement. Periodically inspect the window. Lower the sample carriage using the manual switch. Remove the transmission aperture, if in place. Wipe the sample window with a clean, lint-free cloth. Remove any remaining lint with a sample brush. Fig. 4:12 When finished, be sure there is no lint or dust on the window. If the dirt cannot be removed by cleaning inside the Sample Transport, it may be removed to clean the back side of the window, closest to the detectors. 4.5 General Cleanliness The instrument should be protected from drips, spills, and accumulated grime. The finish is epoxy paint, and is quite durable. To clean, use a spray cleaner or mild detergent, and wipe gently. While outside appearance does not necessarily affect performance, it is desirable to keep the instrument looking good. Avoid liquid and powder spills inside the Sample Transport Module. The inside is black, to minimize reflections, and any accumulation of material may degrade performance. The sliding rails and bearings are greased for smooth travel, and foreign material will shorten the life of these parts, as well as making rough or bumpy motion in the mechanism. It is therefore important to keep the sample materials from spilling into the mechanism. If spills occur, wipe them up as quickly as possible after analysis. Do not use abrasive cleansers on the instrument, either inside or out. 4:8 User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ 5 Troubleshooting Problem Solution No communication Verify correct communication port is selected in the software. User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 5:1 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ The following Spectral plots are some examples of spectral plots which can be indicative of possible problems. All plots were generated using NSAS. Fig. 5:1 Noise Plot: High Bias during Warm-up High Bias on Warm-up. Shows normal noise levels, but very high bias due to cold startup. As the instrument reached operating temperature, the bias settled near the zero line and became quite consistent. Fig. 5:2 Noise Plot: Extreme Humidity Extreme Humidity. Shows effects of extreme humidity, or humidity changes, near the instrument. Note the high noise between 1350-1450 nm, and at 1800-1950 nm. A very humid laboratory will produce high noise peaks in these same areas, which may be less well-defined. The solution is air-conditioning to reduce atmospheric moisture. (Note that air conditioning with a pronounced "cycle" may create more problems than it solves, creating constant changes in temperature and humidity.) 5:2 User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ Fig. 5:3 Noise Plot: Order Sorter Misalignment This plot shows periodic noise starting just under 1900 nm, which indicates misalignment of the order sorter. Another type of order sorter misalignment (not shown) may appear at 1102- 1104 nm. Fig. 5:4 Noise Plot: Lamp Bias This plot shows unstable bias due to a failing lamp in instrument. This may be caused by a breakdown of the tungsten halogen cycle in the lamp. The lamp should be replaced immediately. User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 5:3 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ Fig. 5:5 Noise Plot: Severe Lamp Bias This plot shows severe bias, taken in the 400-1100 area. This lamp went from a very bias positive bias to a very high negative bias, with a few good scans in between. The lamp should be replaced immediately if you see results like this. Fig. 5:6 Noise Plot: Consistent Positive Lamp Bias This plot shows consistent positive bias, which did not settle down to zero as the instrument warmed up. Replace lamp. 5:4 User Manual 6003 1420 / Rev. 2 Sample Transport Reflectance Only™ Fig. 5:7 Noise Plot: Light Leak in Sampling Area This was taken with a loose reflectance detector module, which let light into the sample area. In this case, fluorescent light running at 60Hz, accounts for the periodic wave super-imposed on the spectrum. Note the plot is from 4002500 nm. When plotted from 1100-2500 nm, this appears much more pronounced. Fig. 5:8 Noise Plot: Mechanical Noise in the Visible Region Mechanical noise in visible region.
