Making the most of your support
The story of the Charterhouse is the story of our nation. Until recently, this story has
been largely unknown and now we are embarking on a new chapter by opening the gates
of the Charterhouse to visitors and, at this auspicious time for the charity, I am inviting
you to become a friend.

Gift Aid regulations require us to declare the commercial value of the benefits we offer
our Friends. Part of your payment will be treated as a subscription for the provision
of membership goods and services, with the excess treated as a donation to the
Charterhouse.
Over its long history the Charterhouse has witnessed many of the events that have
shaped our nation. It began as the largest Carthusian monastery in Europe but with the
dissolution under Henry VIII the Charterhouse became a private mansion. Elizabeth I
convened the Privy Council in the Great Chamber at the beginning of her reign when it
was owned by the fourth Duke of Norfolk. James I followed her example by staying at the
Charterhouse before his coronation. And it was in 1611 that Thomas Sutton established
his charity which has lived here since that time.
Sutton’s will provided for up to 80 Brothers: ‘either decrepit or old captaynes either
at sea or at land, maimed or disabled soldiers, merchants fallen on hard times, those
ruined by shipwreck of other calamity’ as well as Charterhouse school to provide for
impoverished boys. James I retained his connection with the Charterhouse, becoming the
first Royal Governor of Thomas Sutton’s foundation.
Since then, the Charterhouse story has continued. Cromwell, Wellington and Gladstone
have all been Governors. The Charterhouse appears in the writings of Daniel Defoe,
Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackeray. Indeed, Thackeray, Robert BadenPowell and John Wesley attended school here. When the school moved to Godalming in
1872, the Brothers remained at the Charterhouse in Clerkenwell.
The Charterhouse story lives on. Large parts of the buildings were damaged in the Blitz.
Yet it was faithfully restored and nowadays, more than 40 Brothers make their home
here. The Charterhouse still has Royal Governors who, alongside the 16 other Governors,
guide our development well into the future.
