Tuesday, wrecking the presidential palace, UN Headquarters and other buildings.
The Red Cross says up to three million people have been affected. The cost of
damage is estimated to be in billions.
A number of nations, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, France, Venezuela
and a number of Latin American nations, are gearing up to send aid. The Red
Cross is sending a relief team from Geneva and two UN planes, carrying
emergency food aid to Port-au-Prince. The Inter-American Development Bank has
immediately approved a $200 000 grant for emergency aid.
