abilities.
The Talk Test:
How hard should I be exercising?
The Talk Test is a simple way to measure aerobic
fitness which is important for independent function
in daily activities. To maximize the benefits from
exercise it is important to know the right intensity.
• Moderate intensity exercise, you can talk, but not sing while moving
• High intensity vigorous exercise, you should only be able to say a few words
• If you can hear yourself breathe you are at
a good level of aerobic exercise intensity
Moderate Intensity exercise include: brisk walking, bicycling, water aerobics, and chair exercises.
High Intensity exercise include: swimming, jogging, cross country skiing and stair climbing.
