Ian Strickland, Research Scientist, MedImmune
I gained my PhD from the University of Liverpool, characterising the role of bacterial superantigens in driving atopic
dermatitis. Part of my early career took me to National Jewish Medical and Research Centre, Denver, Colorado, USA
where I worked with Dr Donald Leung, one of the world’s leading experts on atopic dermatitis. I worked primarily
on immune mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of atopic dermatitis and also potential mechanisms of steroid
resistance, a significant problem encountered in asthma control. More recently I completed post-doctoral studies at
the Department of Immunobiology, Yale University, USA under the guidance of Professor Sankar Ghosh, a world
leader on NFkB biology. Work focussed on understanding the interaction of IKK-beta and IKK-gamma, a key step in
the classical NF-kappa B activation pathway.
I am Senior Scientist within the Respiratory, Inflammation and AutoImmune group at MedImmune, Cambridge
(moved to Cambridge in 2009). I lead research aimed both at supporting our current clinical atopic dermatitis
program and at better understanding the biology of this disease. It is hoped this work will lead to new approaches
to treat this disease.
