SHARING THE CARE SINCE 1976 FRIENDSHIP CENTER ANNUAL 2014-2015 Friendship Center preserves and enriches the quality of life for aging and dependent adults through innovative programs that value the dignity and worth of every person. We provide respite, support and education, enabling families to continue to be engaged in their community, careers and commitments. W DE AR FRIENDS AND SUPPORTERS, We are proud to present this Annual Report for 2014-15, summarizing highlights from this pivotal year for Friendship Center. We focused efforts on growing our center in Goleta, fortifying our Healthy Aging Programs, and forming some exciting new collaborative partnerships, all while concentrating on overall outreach and capacity building to ensure that Friendship Center remains a sustainable organization. Our Goleta center is growing in leaps and bounds! An ever-increasing census, creative use of space, and fresh new activities are adding up to real burst of expansion at our newest center. At both centers, we are proud to offer medical services for our members through our partnership with D.A.S.H. (Doctors Assisting Seniors at Home), providing rapid-response medical care to seniors in their own homes. Once enrolled in the program, our members receive free medical services during their hours of attendance at Friendship Center. With 70,000 unpaid family caregivers in Santa Barbara County, it is crucial to support those caring for loved ones with dementia or other cognitive impairment. To this end, we continue to provide affordable adult day services for aging adults and much needed respite for their caregivers. Last year, only 47% of our operating expenses were covered by participant contributions. For the rest, we rely on donations, grants, special events, and other fundraising efforts. With your support we will continue to provide quality direct respite services for caregivers in our community and ensure that these vital services are available to all. Doing so is our mission, and foremost in our minds and hearts. C O M M U N I T Y E D U C AT I O N Gatekeeper Program In FY14-15, educational presentations were made to a total of 206 community members. Under the direction of Kristen (Kai) Hoye, Friendship Center’s Family Services Director, the Gatekeeper program continues to educate our community about the importance of intervention in situations of elder abuse or neglect. H E A LT H Y A G I N G P R O G R A M S Connections Friendship Center’s innovative weekly class continues at both the Santa Barbara and Goleta locations, providing an excellent opportunity for those in early stages of memory loss to challenge their brains with puzzles, games, and other mentally stimulating activities in a friendly and supportive environment. Brain Fitness for Successful Aging This recurring 6-week series held at the Montecito location is for those of any age interested in understanding the brain and slowing the aging process. Based on leading neuroscientist Dr. Kenneth Kosik’s research on delaying the onset of dementia, the series includes the five key components to brain health: diet, exercise, cognitively stimulating activities, positive social engagement, and stress reduction. K A R O LY N H A N N A Karolyn joined our Board of Directors in 2010. She has served as Secretary for the past two years and took on the role of co-chair of the Events Committee this year. She brings a lot of energy and… well, heart… to everything she does, with her wonderful sense of humor and creativity. A registered nurse, she worked at Cottage Hospital as Director of Nursing Education before taking a faculty position with the Associate Degree Nursing Program at Santa Barbara City College. She retired from full-time teaching at SBCC in June of 2010. ANDRIANA & SOPHIA HOHLBAUCH We first came to know the Hohlbauch sisters when their father attended Friendship Center nearly ten years ago. Nicknamed “The Marshall,” he even had a sheriff’s star that he loved to wear pinned on his shirt while he was here. These two sisters, long after their dad’s passing in 2007, have continued to generously support Friendship Center and to sing our praises far and wide. We are touched by their steadfast and ongoing support, and awed by their unmistakably big hearts. PLANNED GIVIN BIG HEART BIG HEART AWARDS PLANNED GIVING In 2014, Friendship Center was the recipient of a sizeable bequest from Eralda Kogan, whose mother attended Friendship Center in the 80s. As caregiver for her mother, Eralda saw first-hand the services the Center provided to her and was inspired to remember us in her estate plan. We are forever grateful for her generous gift. If you have made provisions in your estate plans to benefit the Friendship Center, please notify us so that we can recognize you as a Friendship Circle Member. To learn more about how you can support Friendship Center, or to become a Friendship Circle Member, please contact Heidi Holly, Executive Director, at (805) 969-0859. “No one has ever become poor by giving.” -A nne Frank FRIENDSHIP CIRCLE 2014-2015 Friendship Circle recognizes donors who name Friendship Center in their wills or trusts and those who make planned gifts to the Center, and includes donors who have made significant lifetime gifts. Gifts may be unrestricted, designated for programs, or designated for our Endowment Fund with only the interest income available for program operating expenses. *John & Dorothy Adams JoAnne Ando Dr. & Mrs. Mounir Ashamalla *Margaret C.
