Texts:
Alfred’s Basic Adult Piano, Book I, published by Alfred (newer version with 6
additional pieces). The Festival Collection – Book 1, Elementary to MidElementary (published by FJH Music).
I will also allow for selected pieces from different books that I or the student may bring
to the class.
Objective: To enjoy playing the piano – AND:
• Play all major and minor 5-finger patterns;
• play all major and minor triads in root position;
• Major scales in two octaves; C, D, E, F, G, A, and B
• Major scales in one octave: Bb, Eb, Ab, Db/C#, Gb/F#
• I-IV-I-V7-I cadences in C, G, D, A, E, B/Cb, F Major
• AND 6 Level II repertoire pieces.
SLO:
(Student Learning Outcome): Play assigned scales and cadences with correct notes, rhythms,
and fingerings AND play assigned repertoire with correct techniques, dynamic, and tempo.
Evaluation:
Evaluation will be based on your completion of the material as stated in
the class Prospectus. You may select from any repertoire pieces on the class prospectus.
Completion of any one box of repertoire equals 252 points. Everyone is required to
compete the technical requirements which totals 238 points. The combined total of repertoire
and technique equals 490 points. So, 440 points equals an A. At least 390 equals a B. At
least 340 points equals a C. At least 290 points equals a D. (That’s roughly 90, 80, 70,
and 60% respectively.) There will be mid term and end term recitals of 3 pieces for each
student. A missed mid-term performance subtracts 50 pts. A missed final performance
subtracts 100 points from your grade. (But you don’t get extra points for performing the
mid-term and final.) There is at least 10 extra points to write a review of your mid-term
performance.
Practice: Around 45 minutes a day. That makes around 5 hours a week. 10,000 hours of practice
(or 3 hours a day for 10 years) will make you and expert! You may use the keyboard lab
to practice but not the practice rooms. You must show your cub card in the music office
to practice. Times will be posted.
Final:
The Final will be Friday, June 2, 2017 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
