Halland
– a great place to be!
Halland is a region on the west coast of southern
Sweden. The beautiful nature in the region offers
something for everyone, from long sandy beaches
in the south, to sun-bleached rocky outcrops in the
north. Rolling fields are intertwined with mixed
forest and enchanting inland lakes, and with a little
luck one might see deer, moose or the somewhat
shy wild boar in its natural habitat.
Many people visit Halland to play golf, go sailing or
fish for trout and salmon. The Lagan, Nissan, Ätran
and Viskan rivers run through Halland and provide
the perfect setting for an enjoyable day’s fishing or
a lovely picnic by the river.
So it’s no surprise that the inhabitants of Halland
live longer than other Swedes and are among the
healthiest people in the country.

Halland
– close to everything
Just over 300,000 people live in Halland, which is
divided into six municipalities. The region is small
in size and everything is close at hand, including
the major cities of Gothenburg, Malmö and
Copenhagen.

Since 2011, Halland is a region in its own right,
and the responsibility for a long list of areas
pertaining to the development of Halland lies with
one and the same organisation – Region Halland.
Our mission is to provide a good healthcare
service and to promote growth and development.
This work is made easier by the relatively short
geographical distances in the region.
To travel by train from Laholm in the south
to Kungsbacka in the north only takes around
73 minutes.

as an employer
Everyday life is a puzzle consisting of many different
pieces. Region Halland, together with the local
municipalities, is responsible for many of the pieces
that complete the puzzle, for example healthcare, public
transport, culture and the development of trade and
industry. We are now able to address Halland’s
development in a coordinated manner.
Region Halland’s politicians have prioritised ten
areas for the work that is to be done in the region
between now and 2015 (see the pieces of the puzzle).

Among other things, the region shall strive to
ensure that
• healthcare in Halland is equally available to all and
that Halland is one of the three regions in Sweden
where the inhabitants are in the best health
• the region’s inhabitants have a great deal of
influence over and actively participate in the
development of their healthcare system
• the use of public transport increases and is an
attractive travel alternative
• more young people are able to find work
• all children and young people are given the
opportunity to experience culture.
some facts to be proud of:
• The inhabitants of Halland live longer than anywhere else in Sweden. The average life
expectancy in the region is almost 83 for women and 78 for men.
• Our inhabitants are healthier than the
average Swede. Eight of ten people who live
in Halland also describe their state of health
as good or very good. That is the joint best
result in the country (a position we share
with the inhabitants of Stockholm).
• The inhabitants of Halland are very satisfied
with their healthcare system. They have
a high level of confidence in the healthcare
provided, they feel that they have access to
the healthcare they require, and they feel
that the waiting times are reasonable.
Healthcare – a matter of heart
By far the largest part of Region Halland’s activities revolves around
healthcare. About 92 per cent of the region’s budget is allocated to
healthcare-related issues, and almost 80 per cent of our approximately
7,500 employees work with activities pertaining to healthcare. We
operate, among other things, two emergency care hospitals, 24 local
medical centres and 20 public dental clinics. Furthermore we help to
finance healthcare activities that are carried out by private care givers.
9
• Region Halland is number one in the
country when it comes to providing health care within the time promised.
• We have Sweden’s best obstetric care.
• Our specialist dental care is internationally
renowned. People visit us from all over the
world in order to study and learn from our
system of dental care.

some facts to be proud of:
A region under
constant development
Region Halland has a large responsibility for Halland’s development.
Some of our assignments have been allocated to us directly by the
government, while other activities are such that we have ourselves
chosen to prioritise.
One important area of responsibility is that of public transport, not
least given the fact that almost 30,000 of our region’s inhabitants
commute daily to a workplace outside the region. As the regional
public transport authority and the owner of Hallandstrafiken, it is
the region that makes decisions about and finances the public
transport system in Halland. The goal is to increase the use of public
transport and to ensure that it is an attractive travel alternative.
Another major challenge for the future is to promote the establishment and growth of more businesses in Halland, something that
in turn creates more job opportunities. During the next few years,
the region will be paying particular attention to five sectors:
health, food, bioenergy, cultural and creative enterprises, and a
sector aimed at attracting visitors, investors and new inhabitants
to the region.
• Halland’s population is constantly increasing.
Our more than 300,000 inhabitants make us
Sweden’s seventh largest region.
• The average level of income in the region is high.
The inhabitants of Halland earn more than in any
other region of Sweden.
• Halland had Sweden’s best employment develop ment from 2000 to 2010.
• Halland has many small businesses spread among
a large variety of sectors. This means that trade and
industry in the region is less sensitive to short-term
economic downturns.
• The young people of Halland are more interested in
entrepreneurship and running a business than other
young Swedes are.
one of the largest employers in halland
Region Halland has around 7,500 employees,
encompassing some 370 different professions. Our
employees are among the healthiest in the country’s
county councils and regions, and they stay with us
for many years. We view them as our most important
resource. It is their work and effort that makes
Halland the best place to live.

Halland is a region on the west coast of
southern Sweden that offers beautiful
nature comprising beaches, forest and
lakes. Halland may be small in terms of
size, but it is big in terms of growth.
Region Halland is responsible for
providing a good healthcare service to
everyone who lives or spends time in
Halland. We also work actively within
a number of other areas that affect how
it is to live and work in Halland, such
as trade and industry, culture and
infrastructure. We want Halland to be
the best place to live.
