DECA
West DECA members have once again successfully
completed another Central Regions Leadership
Conference, this year located in Minneapolis,
Minnesota. We took with us 13 students, and all
who attended received the conference completion
certificate. We hope all will consider competing in
the New Year because they’ve showed such
incredible leadership skills!
DECA would like to congratulate all who came and
participated in the Mini Districts held on December
16th; every member did very well and were able to
learn a general idea about the procedure and feel
of actual competition. Competitions are just around
the corner and many members are already
preparing themselves for Districts. If you missed
Mini Districts, you can still compete! Talk to Ms.
Stuckey or one of the officers and we will inform
you on upcoming study sessions and any questions
you may have regarding competition.
SCHOOL STORE
December’s Moose Head Shedd employee of the
month is Montse Torres. She was chosen because
of her hard work and dedication to the school
store. Montse is willing to step up to the plate and
work for others and help out in the school store
when needed. In addition, she is always on time to
her shift and does her job well. Stop by the school
store before school from 7:45-8:00 or at lunch
from 11:54-12:30 and check out what the school
store has for you.
Exam Pack
If you are interested in purchasing an exam pack
for your student, please stop by the school store
the week of January 11th-15th. An exam pack will
include two pencils, note cards, a stress ball, a
healthy snack and drink, and a few more fun items
to help your student make it through their exams!
For more information on the exam packs contact
Nicole Stuckey at [email protected]
We’d like to thank the volunteers who helped judge
our students in their performance; we would love
to have you join DECA again by judging for
upcoming competitions such as Districts and State.
Please contact Ms. Stuckey at 204-3201 for more
information. The DECA team is very excited for the
upcoming competition season and we hope to see
you all at Districts on January 16th!

CAN YOU HELP MATCH THIS GENEROUS
GRANT?
STUDENT SUPPORT FOUNDATION –
MADISON WEST
West has received a $500 grant to purchase
student digital cameras for students enrolled in our
new photography course, Digital Imaging and
Photography. The Art Department has started a
program whereby students can check out a camera
for a few days to complete out of class
assignments. We currently need 15 more cameras
to meet student needs. The grantor will match cash
contributions to the Art Department to help
purchase these cameras for student use.
Contributions of all digital cameras are also
gratefully accepted. All cash and camera
contributions are tax deductible! Students must
have access to a digital camera for the semester,
but West has many students who cannot afford a
camera. Please keep the Art Department in mind
when considering end-of-the year charitable
donations. Cameras and donations can be sent to
Holly Everill in Room 009 and Jennifer Engelbart in
Room 274. Questions? Email Holly Everill:
[email protected]. Thank you!
Student Support Foundation is a club at West High
School whose mission is to assist the student body
by providing grants of money to student programs
and faculty at West High School. The club receives
a donation from a private foundation in order to
achieve its mission. SSF-MW meets every Tuesday
in room 003. All grants, whether from clubs,
teachers, or students are welcome. They should be
submitted to Heather Lott or Susan Gevelber, both
SSF-MW advisors.
SCIENCE NEWS
Congratulations to four of our dedicated Science
teachers who have completed the National Board
Certification process and are now nationally Board
Certified.
This National program was created by the Carnegie
Forum on Education and the Economy’s Task Force
on Teaching when they released A Nation
Prepared: Teachers for the 21st Century.
Each teacher has passed the rigorous national
exams and has demonstrated they have the skills
and experience to complete the lengthy
certification process.
These Accomplished Teachers include: Betsy
Barnard, Eric Gettrust, Tim Thompson, Kirk
Mefford, and Dominic Johann-Berkel (also teaches
math).
Earth Science has received a $10,000 Toyota
Tapestry grant to study Solar Energy. Solar
experiments will begin next semester.
Grants are prioritized based on the following
criteria: serving a wide and diverse group of
students; creating a long-term, measurable impact
on the West High School Community; and
addressing a real need within this Community. In
addition, grants from student-led organizations are
prioritized, as to reflect SSF-MW’s commitment to
fostering student leadership. (However, faculty
members are also welcome to apply for grants that
serve West students.) SSF-MW supports the West
High School Community by funding the projects
and programs that best enhance the educational
experience at West High School.
For more information, please call 204-3067.
WEST HIGH MATH TEAM
Congratulations to the West High Math Team for an
excellent performance at the LaFollette math meet
last October. With seventeen area schools
competing, our Varsity 1 team took 1st place.
West had many outstanding individual scores and
nine students placed in the top 5.
West High is currently tied for first place (out of 23
schools) in the Wisconsin Math League competition,
and is currently ranked 10th in the nation in the
Mandelbrot Competition. The math team's next
competition is at Madison Memorial on December
9th.

PARENT NEWS
PERMISSION TO LEAVE SCHOOL
Parents! Remember that students may not leave
school without a pass from the office. If your
student has an appointment he or she must check
out in their SLC office. If your student is ill, he or
she MUST go to the nurse's office. Proper parent
notification and check out will happen at that time.
Students who leave school without a pass
will be marked unexcused.
HABITAT FOR HUMANITY SOUPERBOWL
COMING FEB. 6TH
The UW-Madison campus chapter of Habitat for
Humanity will host its Annual Souper Bowl on
Saturday February 6th in West High School’s
cafenasium from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. This annual
fundraiser traditionally held on the Saturday before
the NFL Super Bowl, supports the building efforts
of the UW-Madison campus chapter of Habitat for
Humanity. Students from various area high schools
along with professional artists create high quality
ceramic bowls that sell for $15 a piece and include
soup, bread, dessert and beverage. The Souper
Bowl is an evening of food, art, and entertainment,
bringing the Madison community together to
support a great cause. Larger and more decorative
bowls are sold in the silent Pro Bowl auction. The
evening is packed with entertainment, celebrities,
great food, and door prizes. Be sure to mark your
calendars!

SEMESTER
Reminder regarding second semester schedules:
There will be no schedule changes at semester per
our schedule change policy except for schedule
adjustments needed for the reasons indicated
below:
1. A student did not pass a class that was
required and/or the student’s schedule does
not meet grade level or graduation
requirements (seniors).
2. A student did not pass a class that was a
prerequisite for another class.
3. A student’s Youth Options course or other
approved MMSD course conflicts with the
student’s schedule.
4. A year-long class is dropped – in which case
a new class for second semester may be
added in the same period as the dropped
class.

An Appeal Form must be submitted to the
counselor for all other requests during the first
week of the new semester. Appeal Forms can be
requested in the Highland Office – Room 211.

YOUTH OPTIONS PROGRAM
The Youth Options Program was established to
allow 11th and 12th grade pupils to enroll at an
institution of higher education in Wisconsin to take
courses that lead to credit granted toward high
school graduation. MMSD is required to pay for a
course taken by a high school student at a
secondary institute if a comparable course is not
offered in the school district. Applications may be
obtained in the Counseling Office.
By MARCH 1 for the fall semester, and October 1
for the spring semester, students must notify the
school board of their intention to participate in
YOP. The application for participation must arrive
in the office of the Director of Alternative Programs
by the deadline dates. NO EXCEPTIONS to the
deadline dates will be granted. A separate
application must be processed for each semester
that a student applies to participate in YOP. The
YOP does not apply to summer school or to
Independent Study. See the YOP application (for
either the University of Wisconsin-Madison or
MATC) for requirements and other information.

COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS
TEST SCORES
Juniors - We recommend that juniors register to
take the ACT and/or SAT sometime in the spring of
their junior year if they plan to apply to college.
Both the SAT and ACT are standardized college
admissions tests. Your score on these tests can be
a major part of the college admissions process.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison and all the
UW System Schools accept either the ACT or the
SAT. If you have specific colleges in mind, find
out from the college which exam they require.
BECAUSE COLLEGES TYPICALLY ACCEPT YOUR
HIGHEST SCORE, PREPARE EARLY AND TAKE THE
TEST MORE THAN ONCE.
Students may elect to have their test scores sent
directly to the colleges of their choice when they
register for the test. However, if a student is
applying to a college or university that accepts
either the ACT or SAT, the student may elect to
compare their test results first, then have only the
better score sent (there is a nominal additional fee
for this strategy). Also, a student may take the
ACT as often as they wish, and not send the scores
anywhere, and then later select the best score to
report to colleges. Then colleges receive only the
best test performance results. SAT also gives you
the option to choose which scores are sent to the
colleges of your choice – by test date for the SAT
and by individual test for the SAT Subject Tests.
More detailed information is available in the ACT
and SAT registration packets in the Counseling
Office, or go online.
The UW-Madison is the only university within
the Wisconsin System which requires the
Writing Test.

The FAFSA – Free Application for Federal
Student Aid – is available online at
www.fafsa.ed.gov.
The FAFSA is the federally required form for
students seeking financial aid, such as grants and
loans. The federal student assistance program can
help you pay for most kinds of education after high
school. The aid is available if you are attending a
college, a professional school, or a vocational or
technical school. The FAFSA application must
be completed online. FAFSA worksheets are
available in the Counseling Office.
WISCONSIN ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE
SCHOLARSHIP
College Goal Sunday is a national event that
provides free information and assistance to families
who are filling out the FAFSA. Completing the FAFSA
is the first and most important step in qualifying for
aid. In Madison, this event will take place on two
dates:
The State of Wisconsin awards scholarships to the
top seniors in high schools across the state who
plan to attend a public or private university,
college, or VTAE post-secondary institution located
in the State of Wisconsin. Every year, five West
seniors have been awarded this scholarship.
Saturday, February 20, 2:00 p.m. – at Edgewood
College
The scholarship awards are $2,250 per year
renewable for up to four years.
Sunday, February 21, 2:00 p.m. – at MATC Truax
Campus
Requirements:
High school graduate planning to attend an
institution of higher learning in the State of
Wisconsin. Student must be a legal resident of
Wisconsin and a U.S. citizen or an alien lawfully
admitted for permanent residence.
For more information, visit
www.wiscollegegoalsunday.org.
*Refer to the FAFSA website for a list of the
specific materials to bring to this event:
www.fafsa.ed.gov. Independent students may
bring their own income and asset information.
Criteria:
Highest cumulative GPA for 7 semesters of work.
SCHOLARSHIP & FINANCIAL AID NEWS
ALL-STATE/BYRD SCHOLARSHIP
West High School may nominate three outstanding
seniors. Last year, 663 seniors were nominated
throughout the state, and 138 students received
scholarships. The scholarship awards are $1,500
per year renewable for up to four years.
Requirements:
High school senior accepted for enrollment in any
institution of higher learning, public or private, in
the U.S. Student must be a legal resident of
Wisconsin and a U.S. citizen or national or provide
evidence that he/she is a permanent resident of
the U.S.
Criteria:
• Highest cumulative GPA for 7 semesters of
work.
• Highest ACT score or converted SAT score
(on tests
• Taken no later than December of the senior
year).
MMSD Tie Breaking Procedure for the
Academic Excellence and Wisconsin All
State/Byrd Scholarships
Often, schools will have 20 or more students tied
for the number one rank, all with cumulative GPAs
of 4.0. Top rank for those with 4.0 GPAs will be
determined by using the highest composite ACT
score (or highest converted SAT score), from a
student’s best single test date (tests taken no later
than December of senior year). If, after using this
test score approach, a tie still exists (eg. six 4.0
students all have composite ACT scores of “35”),
our Scholarship Committee declares that a
deadlock exists. In this event, there is no further
method that would fairly and objectively separate
one outstanding candidate from another. At this
point the names of the students tied at each test
score level would be entered into a random lottery
to yield a final rank ordering. The lottery would be
supervised by one of the high school principals.

Dear Families of MMSD Students,
When the weather is bad, the Madison Metropolitan School District follows a set of guidelines for
deciding if school will be open or closed. With the winter season here, I’d like to review these
guidelines with you.
The district must make a decision that is the best for more than 24,000 students. We realize this decision may
not fit with your individual circumstances. Therefore, we encourage and strongly support you in making the
decision that is best for your child(ren). You are always the best judge of your child’s health and safety.
The process for deciding when schools are open or closed due to snow and/or ice
District staff members review the weather conditions beginning early in the morning. They talk with weather
forecasters, the City Streets Department, Madison Police and Dane County Sheriff’s Departments, and school
district staff to see if all buildings are accessible for students and staff.
We also consult with bus companies to see if buses will be able to travel safely to and from school. This is the
primary factor in making our decision. We make the decision whether to close schools by 6:30 a.m. or earlier,
and then communicate this decision to all local news outlets.
How you can find out if schools are closed
On days when the weather is bad, listen to any local radio or television station for information about school
closing. You can also check our web site (www.mmsd.org) or MMSD-TV (Cable Channel 96 or 993) or you can
call (608) 442-2911 – it has a recorded message.
When schools are closed because of extreme cold
When the National Weather Service has a wind chill WARNING for Dane County in effect for the time just
before the school day begins, we will make a decision if our schools should close. It is quite likely we will
make the closing decision on the morning of the day in question. If there is a wind chill ADVISORY (not a
WARNING) for the county, schools will likely be open. (Thresholds from National Weather Service)
When schools are closed, all activities are canceled
When Madison schools are closed for the day, it also means that all activities scheduled in school buildings for
that day are canceled. This includes all MSCR programs and all after school programs.
Why schools are not dismissed early on days when the weather is bad
In many of our families, adults work outside the home and they have no child care arrangements available
before the end of the school day. However, if your schedule allows and if you feel your child(ren) will be safer
at home, you can pick your child(ren) up before the end of the school day. If you do, go to the school office
and request that your child(ren) be dismissed to you.
We try to keep schools open
When schools close, many families have issues with child care. As a result, we try to keep schools open if it’s
safe to do so. However, as we stated at the top of this letter, parents can always make the decision to keep
their child(ren) at home in bad weather.
Why school starts are not delayed on days when the weather is bad but will improve during the
day
In many of our families, adults working outside the home are not able to adjust their work schedules or find
child care to accommodate a later start. If your family transports your child(ren) to school, we appreciate the
extra effort it takes on severe weather days and acknowledge that the students’ arrival might be somewhat
delayed.
When schools are closed for other reasons
If you have a question about whether schools or a particular school will be closed for reasons other than
severe weather, please listen to local radio or television stations, go to our web site or watch MMSD-TV.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation
For every family which is happy that school is in session on days when the weather is bad, there is another
family that feels schools should be closed. The decision to open or close schools during inclement weather
brings out some of the strongest community reactions – no matter which way we go with our weather
decisions.
We appreciate your understanding of the difficulties in making this decision, and your support in helping your
child get to school safely on winter days. Please know that we will use safety considerations in making all of
our weather decisions.
Sincerely,
Daniel A. Nerad
Superintendent of Schools
tiempo.
Atentamente,
Daniel A. Nerad

Regent Drama Club (Facebook): Madison West High School Theater
Now five years old, the Friends of West High Drama (FWHD) organization performs three important roles: we raise funds
to help ensure that West can continue to maintain the quality of its fine theater program; we support theatrical opportunities
through our time and our talents; and we encourage friendships and connections among parents and supporters. Our financial
support, of course, is critically important: we’ve traditionally donated $10,000 each year to the program (and sometimes more,
such as when we helped to fund the new sound system in the auditorium). We thank all of you who have helped us in the past,
and we encourage all who are interested in supporting West drama to step forward with your funds, talents, and time!
BROADWAY WEST IS COMING UP!
February 6, 2010 • 7:00–10:00pm • Alumni Lounge of the UW’s Pyle Center
Plan now to join us for FWHD’s largest fundraiser and social event of the year! It will be a delightful evening of…
• musical and theatrical performances, as well as art exhibits, by our very talented West students
• bidding on some fabulous live-auction items, auctioned by the always-hilarious Tom Farley
• delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts, plus a cash bar with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic options
• socializing with other theater supporters in our casual, but festive lakefront venue, with a 270-degree view of Lake Mendota
We welcome your donations of super auction items: unusual events, irresistible services, exceptional merchandise, original
creations, art objects, delicious edibles, theater or sports tickets, senior-portrait packages, Badger memorabilia, useful objects,
themed baskets, donations from your workplace, resort travel, spa visits, stays at your condo or cabin… You get the idea!
Please contribute to this effort by donating great auction items; attending the evening; and bidding early, often, and high!
And please see the separate page in this issue of the Regent Reporter for a clip-out form that you can use to purchase your
tickets in advance ($30 for one adult, $50 for two adults, and $10 per West student), and/or to alert us about your fabulous
live-auction donation. The earlier we hear from attendees and donors, the better we can plan this great evening. Thank you!
REGENT DRAMA CLUB’S FABULOUS SPRING MUSICAL, GUYS AND DOLLS
Mark your calendars now for one of the greatest American musicals ever: March 5, 6, 12, and 13, 2010
L. Joe Dahl, director • Kelle Adams, choreographer
Auditions were held in December. All cast members and any student who would like to work as part of the stage, costume,
lighting, sound, hair/make-up, administrative, and/or props crews should check the “drama board” (across from Room 272,
next to the Colucci art gallery) every day for up-to-the-minute information on rehearsals, crew meetings, and work sessions.
Students who have not participated in a crew before are absolutely welcome to join up and help!
Synopsis of Guys and Dolls: All the hot gamblers are in town, and they’re all depending on Nathan Detroit to set up this week’s
incarnation of “The Oldest Established Permanent Floating Crap Game in New York.” The only problem is that he needs
$1,000 to get the place. Throw in Sarah Brown, who’s short on sinners at the mission she runs; Sky Masterson, who accepts
Nathan’s $1,000 bet that he can’t get Sarah Brown to go with him to Havana, Cuba; Miss Adelaide, who wants Nathan to
marry her; Police Lieutenant Brannigan, who always seems to appear at the wrong time; and the masterful music and lyrics of
Frank Loesser, and you’ve got quite a musical. Includes the songs “Fugue for Tinhorns,” “Luck Be a Lady,” and “Sit Down,
You’re Rocking the Boat.” Don’t miss it!
FINE ARTS WEEK 2010: Students in the Theater III class, led by Rebecca Jallings, will cast and direct all of the one-act plays
that you’ll be able to enjoy during West’s Fine Arts Week in May 2010.
THANK YOU AGAIN to everyone who made the fall Regent Drama Club production, The Miracle Worker, such an amazing

• Eat, drink, and be merry with other West parents, friends, and students
• Hors d’oeuvres, desserts, and a cash bar will be available,
with both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages
• Bid on great live-auction items, auctioned by the always-hilarious Tom Farley
• Relax in our casual, but festive lakefront venue, with its 270-degree view of Lake Mendota
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
• Donate a tempting auction item: Unusual events, irresistible services, exceptional merchandise, original creations, art
objects, delicious edibles, theater or sports tickets, senior-portrait packages, Badger memorabilia, useful objects, themed baskets,
donations from your workplace, resort travel, spa visits, stays at your condo or cabin… You get the idea! All donors will be
recognized at the event and acknowledged in writing afterward. Contact FWHD at [email protected] to let us
know what you can contribute! We can assist with a pick-up if needed.
• Reserve your tickets to attend Broadway West: $30 for one adult; $50 for two adults; and $10 per West High student. Just fill
out the form below and mail it back to us.
• Make an online donation: If you cannot attend, but would like to support West drama in your absence, consider making a
contribution using the form below or online through the Foundation for Madison’s Public Schools at
https://fmps.org/donate.asp?pt=drama
Thank you for your support — this will undoubtedly be an evening to remember! Questions? Contact us at
[email protected].
