2015 Festival Pack

18th March 2015
19th PERTH SPEECH &
DRAMA FESTIVAL
Dear Member,
Presented by: SDTAWA
and Australian Music Examinations Board
(AMEB)
The 19th Perth Speech and Drama Festival commences Sunday 7th June and concludes Sunday, 21st
June 2015. The venues this year will include Collier Primary School (Como), Perth College (Mt Lawley), and the
Goatcher Theatre (Wesley College, South Perth).
For the 2015 Festival, competitors will again compete in their school year groups. Entries close for the
non-competitive events on 18th May and for all other events on 25th May 2015. The non-competitive events
on Sunday 7th June will include poetry for Year 3 and Year 4, prose for Year 4/5, show and tell for Year 3, and
storytelling for Year 4/5.
In the competitive events, prizes will include a trophy for the winner(s) and book vouchers or Planet
vouchers for highly commended. The only exception is the Year 5 poetry where there will be no winner, but
some highly commended awards will be given. Cash prizes will also be awarded to winners in Year 7, Year 8,
Year 9, Year 10, Year 11, Year 12 and Open sections. All non-competitive entrants will receive a certificate of
participation. All winners and highly commended recipients will receive a certificate and all participants will
receive a brief report on their performance. Please note that the number of highly commended awards given in
each category will depend on the number of entries. If there are insufficient entries in any category to create a
competition (fewer than 3), then this becomes an exhibition event only.

Guidelines for Teachers
PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU READ THESE GUIDELINES CAREFULLY TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT FOR
YOUR STUDENTS.
GENERAL
 All of the following sections have particular styles and require different skills. Particularly, please note
the difference between performance of prose, poetry and dramatic pieces.
 There will be an official prompt
 Candidates may not receive any verbal or non-verbal coaching while they are performing. This does not
include conducting in Choral Speaking by the teacher if desired
 All candidates should bring along TWO copies of the work to be performed, for adjudication and
prompting purposes
 The work must be clearly marked with the title and the candidate’s name
 Selections, if edited, must be typed and contain only those words that will be performed. This is
essential for prompting purposes and anything else may not be accepted.
 Introductions are not essential, but if required for context in prose, dramatic monologues or duologues,
they must be typed and stapled to the piece for the MC to read. This will not be included in the timing
of the piece.
Poetry
 No costumes are to be worn by candidates
 Movements and gesture to be kept to a minimum and appropriate to the subject matter. Please do not
overdramatise, particularly with lyric poetry
 Lyric poetry should primarily express thoughts and feelings
 Narrative poetry should tell a story
Prose
 No costumes are to be worn by candidates
 If there is dialogue there needs to be sufficient narration to distinguish it from a dramatic monologue
 Movements and gesture should be kept to a minimum and appropriate to the subject matter. Do not
over dramatise
Dramatic Monologues and Duologues
 Costumes are optional
 Any special effects, including lighting are the responsibility of performers and their teachers
 Adapted from a play or novel portraying the thoughts and feelings of one (dramatic monologue) or two
(duologues) characters.
Choral Speaking
 Costumes are optional
 The focus is primarily on the precision of combined voices but movement may be included if
appropriate
 Conducting by teachers is optional and groups will not be judged on this criterion
 Music may be used to compliment the performance
