Thank you for taking time to fundraise for the Dublin SPCA. It is
motivated students like you that really make a difference to the
lives of animals.
Why fundraise for the Dublin SPCA?
The Dublin SPCA is a non-government charity which depends
almost entirely on donations and support from the community. It
costs over €2 million to operate the Dublin SPCA each year and
we only receive 3% government grant.
Donations to the Dublin SPCA support the work of our animal
shelter, ambulance drivers and Inspectors, provides community
education on responsible pet ownership, works towards
improving animal welfare legislation, and helps pay for the
running of our subsidised mobile veterinary clinics.
Most importantly your donations help look after the daily needs
of Dublin SPCA animals, giving them a second chance of
happiness. So it’s time for Action!
Step 2
Choose your Action For Animals fundraising idea!
D
Dance-a-thon - host a school dance or disco with proceeds going to
help the animals
Darts Tournament – A fun way to raise funds and a great way to get
teachers involved.
Dinner Party – Arrange to have a fancy lunch in school by bringing
in a selection of different foods people can donate money to try.
Donations in lieu of presents – a great thing to think about if you
have a Birthday, Communion approaching or near Christmas.
Dress funny in school day – raise funds by charging €1 or €2 per
person who dresses funny. Give a prize for the best.
Duck race – A safer and easier version can be done using remote
control cars or wind up toys in a school hall.
S
Sponsor a Pet – Sponsor one of the Dublin SPCA resident animals.
Support the Dublin SPCA by becoming a junior Member. Have a
membership drive and get all your friends and school mates to join.
Stalls - sell food, drink, cake and lollies.
Save up coins in your money box or have a money train. Line up all
the collected coins and see how many times the coin train will go
around the hall floor.
Sponsorship - get sponsored by your family and friends to do a
sponsored event such as a sponsored walk, read-athon, silence, etc.
Sale - have a jumble sale or sell good condition clothes, books and
toys.
P
Step 2 continued
Printer Cartridges – Ask if you can set up a collection box with in
the school reception where old printer cartridges and old mobile
phones can be gathered. When the box is full it can be collected free
of charge by contacting www.recyclingappeal.ie/dublinspca.
Photo day - organise a photo day at your school – photos could be of
you or your teachers as a baby or of your pets. Charge and entrance
fee and get prizes for the best and worst photos.
Projects - raise awareness by doing projects about the work of the
Dublin SPCA. Arrange for a guest speaker or a visit to the Dublin
SPCA centre in Rathfarnham.
Party - Hold a Dublin SPCA themed birthday party. Ask guests to
make a donation to the Dublin SPCA instead of bringing presents.
C
Casual clothes day - charge a €1 donation for wearing casual clothes
to school for a day.
Cupcake Day - bake some delicious cupcakes to sell to friends,
teachers and family.
Concert - organise a wonderful school concert, a play or a comedy
evening in aid of the Dublin SPCA.
A
Animals - Help pass on the message about the work of the Dublin
SPCA microchipping and neutering services.
Appeal - collect items on our Wish List such as old mobile phones,
CD albums, old towels, pet food, newspapers and shredded paper.
Animal Care Day - get everyone at your school to dress up like their
favourite animal or focus on one type of animals and the types of care
it needs.
Step 3
What do I do now?
Now that you have decided on your Student fundraising activity,
talk with a parent or teacher about your idea to see if you need
permission or what help they are willing to give. It is a good idea
to plan how much time you will need, how many people will need
to help and all the items you need – write it down!
Use the fundraising checklist.
Come up with an idea for your event.
Talk to your parents and/or teacher.
Talk to friends and family to get any helpers you need.
Allocate jobs to your helpers.
Set a date for your activity.
Create some advertising materials for your activity.
Send cheque / money order to the Dublin SPCA.
Receive certificate and receipt for your activity!
Send thank you letters to helpers.
Please feel free to use the following information when discussing
the Dublin SPCA:
“Each year the Dublin SPCA receives more than 80,000 phone calls
from the public, responds to more than 10,000 emergency calls and
rescues, rehabilitates, releases and rehomes thousands of animals and
wildlife. The Dublin SPCA is Ireland’s largest animal welfare
organisation and has been serving the public since 1840. We are able
to this because of the generous support from animal lovers just like
you. We rely on your help to meet our nearly €2 million annual
budget. We are not a government agency and receive only 5% of our
total budget in grants from the government.”
How to advertise your event
There are lots of free places to advertise your fundraising event. Here is a
list of just some:
Facebook
Twitter
Blogs
Posters
Local radio stations – most local stations have a free community
notice events announcement slot. Check on their website for more
details.
Word of mouth
Church, school or local supermarket notice boards
How to make a poster to get your event noticed
Your poster should be bright and colourful but not too busy. Keep the text
to a minimum and just give the details that people need to know such as
Events Name, Date, Time, Location, who its in aid of and finally who to
contact if they need more information or want to help.
How to make a good sponsorship form
Keep it simple. You should clearly make what the event is in aid of and
who will receive the money. You should have space for your name and
address as well. You will then need space for the sponsors name, address
and amount given.
After the event
Record your project or event. You will then know if it is worth doing
again next year and how you did it. Get feedback for other people to help
you in the future. It is also very important that you give full details to the
charity so they can correctly record it and recognise your efforts.
After the Event
Well done! Remember - Ever cent helps us to care for sick,
injured and cruelly treated animals rescued by the Dublin SPCA.
Remember to record your project or event. You will then know if
it is worth doing again next year and how you did it. Get
feedback for other people to help you in the future.
Once your fundraising activity has been completed, send your
donation (cheque or money order) to:
Education Department
Dublin SPCA,
Mount Venus Road,
Rathfarnham,
Dublin 16.
Don’t forget to include your contact details so we can send you a
certificate of appreciation, receipt and thank you letter. Make sure
you also take photos and tell us all about your fundraising activity
– you may even be featured on the Dublin SPCA website.
