HPISD FLES Curriculum – First Grade UNIT NAME UNIT 7: VAMOS A VIAJAR ESTIMATED DURATION (AP Theme: Contemporary Life: Travel and Leisure) 4 WEEKS 9 WEEK PERIOD 1 2 3 4 Unit Overview In this unit, students prepare to travel and explore famous landmarks and landforms of Mexico. They name various modes of transportation available for their travels and classify them as land, air, or water transportation. As a class, the weather is researched and appropriate clothing is selected for specific locations. Students communicate with others on where and how they travel. They expand their knowledge of the calendar and math skills with various activities. Students continue skip counting by up to 120 and ask and tell the date. They continue identifying characteristics of the seasons and relate it to choices of when to travel. Data is also collected, represented, and interpreted using graphs. Enduring Understandings The student will understand that: Learning another language facilitates communication across cultures when traveling. The study of languages enriches knowledge in other disciplines such as math and social studies. Language is a tool to develop an understanding the cultural meaning of landmarks.
