Word Section Break Component
Qvidian Proposal Automation (QPA) Quick Reference Guide
Word Section Break Component
The Word Section Break Component is a MS Word document files (.doc or .docx) controlling the page
format, all of the controls available in File | Page Setup (Word 2003) or the Page Layout tab (Word 2007,
2010), plus Headers and Footers.
Word Section Break Components effectively act as “switches” to control the page layout for the
appropriate sections of the document. Common examples and uses are:
 A Letterhead Word Section Break Component to set the letter page to print with the correct letter
heading.
 A Title Page Word Section Break Component to set the format for the title page, including any
watermarks/graphics, logos, etc.
 A Proposal Page Word Section Break Component to set the document pages to print with headers
and footers, page numbering, etc.
In Architecting | Document Types, the Word Section Break Subsection is selected from the Toolkit.
When the required and optional fields are completed and saved, the Subsection then becomes a
Component to be used to control what page format that document section should use.
Where a Style Template controls the text formatting on a page, a Word Section Break Component
controls the layout of the page itself. You will need a Word Section Break Component for each different
page layout in your document, typically one for your title page, one for your continuation pages, plus
one for any other page layouts (letters, appendices, section dividers, etc.).
Different from a Template, a Word Section Break Component is a Word document where the options
you select for Page Layout, plus the content you place in the Header and Footer, will control what the
pages look like in the sections of the document to which they are applied.
Creating and Modifying Word Section Break Components
Simply create your page layout in MS Word as you want it to appear. Set your paper size, margins,
orientation, printing preferences, and any other option available to you in File | Page Setup (Word
2003) or from the Page Layout Tab (Word 2007, 2010). Then add the appropriate content to the
Headers and Footers for that page type and your Section Break is ready to include in your document
architecture.
Adding a Word Section Break Component to your Document
Select Document Types from the Architecting menu, then open the Document Type to which you
want to add your Word Section Break Component.
Click on the Toolkit button to open the Toolkit and double-click or drag-and-drop the Word Section
Break Subsection option onto the appropriate document section.
Use the Move Up or Move Down buttons to make sure the Word Section Break Subsection is in the
correct place. See following example:

Essentially the document structure or architecture is the order in which the items of content will be
built into your document. Therefore, you need to position the Word Section Break Component
above the content items in that document section – ideally the first item in that section. The page
format is set first and then the content can be built onto that page.
Note: You do not need a Word Section Break Component in each section of the document.
Once a Word Section Break Component is included in the document structure, all the content
after that Component prints using that page layout. You only need to put a new Word Section
Break Component into the document structure if the page layout needs to change.
Once you have added the placeholder for the new Word Section Break Component in the document
structure, you need to add the appropriate Section Break document to it. Click on the New Word
Section Break Component:
Change the Name, Display Title, and specify how the section will be Included to identify each Word
Section Break Component (e.g., “Title Page Section Break”) and then Upload the Word Section Break
Component document.
