Among Australia’s greatest rarities…
Australia’s first sovereign, struck at the
nation’s first official mint, the 1855 Sydney
Mint Sovereign Type I is one of the most
revered and sought after coins in Australian
numismatics. Desired by all Australian
collectors, we can offer two examples of this
iconic Australian rarity in the seldom seen
premium grades of good Very Fine and Very
Fine respectively.
Distinguished by the famous ‘wreath’ motif,
with ‘SYDNEY MINT’, ‘AUSTRALIA’ and ‘ONE
SOVEREIGN’ proudly emblazoned upon the
reverse, the 1855 Sydney Mint Sovereign Type I
is an original, important artefact of the Australian
Gold Rush. The creation of the Sydney Mint was
approved by British authorities in 1853 in direct
response to the discovery of gold in eastern
Australia, and in 1855, the Mint struck a total of
502,000 sovereigns.

Naturally enough, a vast number of coins from
that mintage have been lost in the 161 years
since struck, with many also destroyed for
the gold. As a consequence, the 1855 Sydney
Mint Sovereign is rare in any condition. It is
excessively rare when found in the upper
echelons of quality, as seen here.
A vital opportunity for the serious collector,
and the astute investor, we have just one gVF
and one VF example of the 1855 Sydney Mint
Sovereign Type available.

Australia’s first gold coin
Australia’s first gold coin, forming a unique,
powerful link to the 19th century Australian
Gold Rush, the 22-carat 1852 Adelaide Pound
is one of the nation’s most important coins.
An incredible opportunity to become one of
approximately 200 people who can own this
exceptional rarity, we have just one example of
the iconic 1852 Adelaide Pound coin in stock!
Struck by South Australian authorities without
British approval, the 1852 Adelaide Pound was
created in response to a severe coin shortage in
the colony caused by the Gold Rush. Struck from
November 1852 until February 1853, the Adelaide
Pound at one point contained gold worth nearly
two shillings above face value. As a result, a vast
majority of the mintage of 24,648 was melted down
for the intrinsic value. One of the nation’s highest
profile rarities, and a priceless piece of Australian
history, it is thought that approximately 200
examples of Australia’s first gold coin exist today.
Sought after by investors as much as collectors, and
exceedingly rare in any condition, the 1852 Adelaide
Pound is one of the most prestigious acquisitions
you could make. If you have dreamed of owning this
key Gold Rush rarity, this is your chance.
With just the single example in stock – graded
Very Fine – you must act now to become ‘one of
the 200’.

Australia’s first sovereigns in premium grade!
Genuine Gold Rush history you can hold in your hands,
the famous Sydney Mint Sovereign is an essential
component of every Australian collection. Highlighted by
stunning Uncirculated examples of the last of the series,
we have three Sydney Mint Sovereign dates available in
premium grade!
Following the discovery of gold in Australia in the early
1850s, Britain established the first overseas branch of
the Royal Mint in 1853 – the Sydney Mint. Australia’s
first official mint, the Sydney Mint struck Australia’s first
sovereign in mid-1855. Struck from 1855 until 1870,
the ‘Sydney Mint Sovereign’ carried a reverse proudly
emblazoned with the words ‘SYDNEY MINT’, ‘AUSTRALIA’
and ‘ONE SOVEREIGN’.
This design had been specifically chosen by authorities in
London to distinguish the allegedly inferior colonial issues
from British sovereigns. Ironically, it was discovered that
Sydney Mint Sovereigns were actually preferred to their
British counterparts! As a result, the distinctive colonial
designs were replaced in 1871, with the Sydney Mint
directed to strike St George and Shield sovereign types.

Complete Half Sovereign Type Set!
A rich insight into Australia’s Gold Rush heritage,
the 1855-1918 Complete Half Sovereign Type

tremendous overview of one of Australia’s most
important series, this collection comprises an
example of all SEVEN Australian gold Half Sovereign
types!

Australian Half Sovereigns are scarce to rare in any
grade – largely due to the tiny number struck. All seven
types are notable for low mintages, with approximately
one Half Sovereign struck for every ten Sovereigns.
When you also factor in that, as a lower denomination,
Half Sovereigns had a much higher circulation rate, it
is no surprise that these coins are tough-to-find today.
The scarcity is exacerbated by the number melted for
the gold over the years.
A landmark opportunity for a handful of our clients, we
currently have FOUR 7-coin half sovereign type sets
available. Headlined by the rare 1855-56 Sydney Mint
Half Sovereign Type I in G-VG, this set also comprises
the 1857-66 Sydney Mint Type II (VG-F), 1871-87 Young
Head Shield (F), 1887-93 Jubilee (F-VF), 1893-1900
Veiled Head (F-VF), Edward VII (F-VF) and George V

A collector acquisition ‘par excellence’, the 1855-1918

The Complete Edward VII Sydney Mint Half Sovereign Collection
A wonderful opportunity for a handful of collectors, we
have managed to assemble EIGHT utterly complete King
Edward VII Sydney Mint Half Sovereign Sets! With
Edward VII Half Sovereigns particularly scarce, this was
no easy task.
The scarcity of Edward VII Half Sovereigns is in large
part simply due to the numbers struck at the Sydney
branch of the Royal Mint. The Sydney Mint struck the
Half Sovereign denomination in five years – 1902, 1903,
1906, 1908 and 1910 – with the average mintage a
mere 327,000!
As with all gold coins, the Half Sovereign was targeted
by precious metal profiteers, and a significant number of
Edward Half Sovereigns have fallen victim to the melting
pot in the 100+ years since struck. When you also take
into account that the Half Sovereign was subject to a
much higher rate of circulation than the sovereign, it’s
not hard to see why so few exist today.
