Welcome to Honors 10
Summer Reading Assignment
Future Honors English 10 Student,
In this course, there will be an abundance of
writing, reading and critical thinking
opportunities to prepare students for college as
well as to build the foundational skills needed
for AP Lang and AP Lit. This course will be
rigorous and challenging. You will not pass if
you do not do the work.
This starts now.
Over the summer, Honors 10 students are
expected to read and annotate the novel
Fahrenheit 451, by Ray Bradbury. Utilize your
best annotation strategies as covered Freshman
year (an English 9 mastery target) The grading
rubric for annotations is on the back of this
page. Students can purchase a used or new
copy of the novel online or at any bookstore for
approximately $5-$7. Buying a personal copy
allows students the freedom to annotate
directly on the text. A student may also elect to
check out a copy of the book from the library
instead. In this case, annotations will need to be
on post-it notes throughout the book and/or
notated with thorough and well developed
external Cornell Notes.
There will be a reading comprehension test for Fahrenheit 451 when we convene for the start of
our class.
Additional texts that are currently slated to be covered in this course include: Animal Farm,
Night, Taming of the Shrew, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Lord of the Flies. (Note this list is subject
to minor changes depending on class size and need).
