Tides - CBSD.org

Homework
 Continue working on unit review
– due Friday
 Practice measuring waves
Learning Targets
 I can utilize wave characteristics to calculate
wavelength, amplitude, height, and speed.
 I can describe tides and explain the difference
between the different kinds of tides.
Review: on the dry erase…
Draw and Label the following parts of a wave:
 Crest
 Amplitude
 Wave Height
 Trough
 Wavelength
Speed of Waves
Measuring Waves
Tides
 While watching, answer the following questions:
1. What causes tides?
2. Does the sun or moon have a greater
influence on the Earth’s oceans?
3. What are the two different types of
tides?
Tides
 Tides: daily
changes in the
level of the ocean
water
 Created by the
interaction
between the
earth, sun, and
moon
Tides
HIGH: When part of the ocean is
directly facing the moon, water
is pulled in that direction.
 At the same time, water on
the opposite side of the earth
bulges as well because of the
speed the earth is spinning
 This causes high tides
LOW: When a high tide occurs,
water is drawn away from other
areas on earth causing a low
tide
Types of Tides
 Spring Tide- occurs twice a month at full and new moon
 Causes highest high tide and lowest low tide
Types of Tides
 Neap Tide- occurs twice a month at first and third quarter
 Causes low high tide and high low tide
Homework
 We will be going over the unit review
tomorrow
 Finish station activities
Learning Targets
 I can describe tides and explain the difference
between the different kinds of tides.
 I can chart and analyze high and low tides in a given
area.
Neap and Spring Tides
Use page 98 in your textbook to
complete the chart on the bottom
of your tides notes in your ISN.
Graphing Tides
Wave Height
Graphing Tides
High and Low Tide Times
Graphing Tides
 Add to graph
 Title
 Axis Labels
 Missing bars
 Color bars – one color for high tide, one
color for low tide: make sure to make a key!
Stations
 Work your way around the room to complete all eight
stations.
 You will need your packet, tide graph, and ISN
 Try to answer the questions without the ISN first
 No more than 4 people at each station!
Exit Ticket
Answer the following questions on your
exit ticket..
1. Which factor has the greatest
influence on climate in Boulder, CO?
2. The current moon phase is a new
moon? What type of tide will we see?
