June 2017 The Messenger Volume 82, Issue 6 What’s Inside From Our Pastor New and Noted: Transition and Call Process update Summer Worship Summer Hymn Sings Summer Congregation Meeting Messenger Deadline Synod Assembly Graduates Reception Meet Our Graduates Lutherlyn Camperships Thrivent Grant ELCA Good Gift Freed and Renewed in Christ Dear Holy Trinity Brothers and Sisters in Christ, As the time now comes for us to say good-bye, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to our Lord and to all of you. I thank God for all that we have been given as we have shared life and ministry together over the past six and a third years. I believe that we have strived to serve Christ faithfully as a community of disciples. We have witnessed to the good news of Jesus in worship, learning, mutual care for one another, service to neighbors in Greenville and far off. Together we have known times of great blessing and joyful celebration and also times of sadness and struggle. In and through it all, we have always seen God’s faithfulness and loving care. For this reason let our good-bye be filled with a sense of thanksgiving. For all of us there is hopeful expectation as we look to the future. That is the product of faith that the Holy Spirit gives to us. In the Spirit’s leading, I firmly believe that our Lord is calling me to new paths in life and possible new ways of serving in retirement from active pastoral ministry. Your hopefulness for life and service lies in the assurance that Christ is continuing to call you to serve here. You can trust that all the gifts and strength that you will need for your ministry together will be given you. Some things now change in our relationship. I am no longer your pastor. I cannot and must not continue any pastoral actions or care with you. To do that would only cause confusion and undermine the authority of the ministry of your interim pastor and eventually your new regularly called pastor whom the Holy Spirit will lead to you. How wise our church is in recognizing this in its pastoral ethics guidelines and constitutions. You can trust that your interim pastor and future pastor will be committed to you in every way. My love for you in Christ will remain and continue. We have a common bond of baptismal faith and relationship with our Lord and with one another that goes on. We share the same vows of living among God’s people, hearing the Word and sharing the Supper, daily giving testimony by our lives to God’s love, mercy, and forgiveness these remain our common life even though we are apart. Thank you for all your well-wishes, expressions of support, kind words, and notes of thanks and care for me and Marilyn over the past weeks. As we part, let our prayer for one another be what unites us. Pray for us in this time of change and new beginnings. We pray for you. The peace of the Lord be with you always. It is important that they intentionally listen and are sensitive to the needs of the Congregation such as new members or issues that could become a problem. The Bishop is the resource for these needs. At the May 16 Congregation Council meeting, the following six members were asked and agreed to serve on the Transition Team: Bob Massing (Convener, who was appointed by Council, will call the Transition Team together for meetings), Carol McQueen, Ruth Heil, Mike Bradley, Jim Martin, and Marj Stubert. The Transition Team will meet with Bishop Ralph Jones on June 1 at 7:00 p.m. Watch upcoming Messengers for more information on the process. Congregation Makes A Change for Summer Sunday Worship Again This Year Beginning June 11 By a nearly unanimous vote, our congregation, at its January winter Congregation Meeting approved the Council Resolution on Summer Sunday Worship in 2017: That a single Sunday worship service be scheduled for 9:30 a.m. dur ing the months of June, July, and August of 2017. Come, lift your voice in praise. All voting members (those who have given a contribution of record and communed during the past year) should attend. The reports of various committees, Council, pastor, and staff will be accepted. Bishop Ralph Jones of our Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod will be our speaker. Plan to attend. 2 Please Note: Messenger Deadline With the retirement of Pastor Penvose and the arrival of Supply and/or Interim pastors, the office is asking for your help in adhering to the Messenger article deadline that is posted in the bulletin announcement inserts. This deadline is important as it drives when the newsletter can be proofed, folded, labeled, and mailed. The deadline is usually the third or fourth Monday of the month (depending on how many weeks are in the month). By Wednesday of that week the office volunteer will be prepared to come in and proof the pages. It will be run on Thursday and mailed on Friday to arrive at your home by Saturday or Monday. If you know there will be a problem hitting the deadline, please call the office and arrangements will try to be made. Thank you for your cooperation with this. It is greatly appreciated. On Pentecost, fifty days after Easter and the first of the last three feasts days of the liturgical year, one service is scheduled at 10:45 a.m. at which the congregation will be joined by Warren Brass Ensemble for preparation (music by brass and music for brass and organ) as well as accompaniment on hymns and acclamations. Tim Carlson has assumed the leadership role in the quintet and other instrumentalists include Derrick Kittle, Jeff Bickel, John Shamp, and Wes O’Connor. They’ve been invited to join the congregation after church for the pot-luck luncheon observing Pastor Penvose’s retirement. The quintet will be with us again in October for Reformation. The second of the last three feast days of the liturgical year is Trinity Sunday on June 11, 2017. On the second Sunday in June Richard Sesco has been invited to premiere, at least in Greenville, a work for trumpet and organ entitled Credo a three-sectioned exposition of the Nicene Creed, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit composed by Wayne Wold. This piece is preparation for that day beginning at 9:15 am. Mr. Sesco will accompany hymns and acclamations also. On April 30, 2017 a concert in observance of the 500th of the Reformation was cosponsored by Friends of Music and the Northwestern Pennsylvania Synod. Ann Labounsky, an organist of international fame and an author, was the featured musician who performed organ music of the Reformation. The afternoon concert was followed by a lovely reception. The steering committee of Friends of Music would like to publicly thank the following: first, Carol Koehler who graciously yet efficiently organized this event; Pastor Martin Roth, Synod liaison, Pastor Lee Penvose, FOMSC liaison, Tammy Williams who organized the program several times and the following people who served or prepared food or set up Trinity Hall: Susan Achenbach, Linda Armstrong, Michael Bray, Paul and Susan Bittler, Mary Beth Bradley, Billie and Dave Hollenbaugh, Betty K. Junk, Rae Johnson, Chuck and Sheryl Lanning, Elizabeth Loughan, Olivia Martin-Call, Jim Martin, Bob Massing, Bonnie Massing, Karen McKay, Richard Meeker, Mary Moore, Jason Oros, Krista Oros, Ryan Oros, Kelly Oros, Marilyn Penvose, Marie Riley, Linda Saverino, Anna-Marie Shears, Marj Stubert, Gloria Spargo, Barbara Swartz, Kathy Thompson, and Nancy Ullstrom. Some people did double-duty, i.e. donated food then ushered. The afternoon of April 30th was a prime demonstration of the solidarity of the people of Holy Trinity and the residents of Greenville. Maidene Hackett, Director of Music Lutherlyn Camperships Once again our congregation will offer camperships to our members whose children decide to attend a camp or program at Camp Lutherlyn. Church Camp is a wonderful and fun way to interact with other Christians for summer activities including Bible Study, swimming, horseback riding, etc. The church will provide a campership of $250.00 for the children of our parish. Pick up your Lutherlyn brochure today outside the church office, or visit www.lutherlyn.com to register online. For information, contact Alecia Eppley at 724-588-0910. Alecia Eppley, Parish Education Committee 5 Thrivent Grant Using a Thrivent Financial for Lutherans grant of $250 Holy Trinity members and Good Shepherd volunteers purchased, delivered and stocked shelves with bathroom tissue. Good Shepherd doesn’t purchase non food items, so by providing this necessary item we can aid their clients. Pictured are Paul and Sue Bittler, Bonnie Massing and Brian Williams. Give An ELCA Good Gift If you need to give a gift to somebody who “has it all”, an ELCA Good Gift goat or flock of chicks or piglet could be your answer. Through this program needy people all over the world are trained in caring for the particular animal, and then are given the animal with the understanding that the first offspring will be given to a neighbor who also is trained. In this way the people can improve their nutrition and sell extra products to pay for health care, better housing, and school fees. Whole villages are helped through this project. Last year $5,471,479 was raised to help in this way. Your person receives a greeting card announcing the gift. Contact ELCA.org/goodgifts Bonnie Massing Social Ministry Thank You Almost 100 people were served on May 1 at the Good Shepherd Community Dinner sponsored by Holy Trinity. We wish to thank the following people who participated in the dinner by cooking the dinner, preparing salads and deserts, delivering take-out dinners, and cleaning up the dining hall: Fran Black, Darlene Ferguson, Kelly Jones, Marilyn Penvose, Judy Leary, Dick Meeker, Mary and John Moore, Linda and Barry Oman, Marie Riley, Linda Saverino, Marj Stubert, Darla and Wayne Swift, and Sue Bittler. Thanking you for helping our neighbors. Social Ministry/Service Committee Produce Table This year’s season of enjoying the Produce Table has begun. This co-op is available to anyone, whether you are the farmer, the baker, or the enjoyer of the delights of fresh flowers, produce, and baked goods. We are asking our gardeners to consider “planting a row for the church.” Surplus produce and flowers will be placed on the table in the narthex for those who wish to have them. This is a great way for us to enjoy and appreciate the other members of our congregation. If you wish to give as you’ve received, World Hunger envelopes will be available for donations to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. 6 Good Shepherd Request for June The Good Shepherd Center is our church community social service agency that supports the needs of many in the area. The Good Shepherd Center's request for Holy Trinity for June is canned or boxed meals. Donations may be placed in the marked box in the cloister. The Good Shepherd Thrift Store is now open at 10 N. Water Street in Greenville (at the corner of Water and Shenango; in the former Gibson Furniture building)). Hours of operation are 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Second Mile Giving for June Karagwe Diocese Girl’s School Scholarships Each month, we offer the opportunity for our members to reach out into the greater community to those who are seeking to minister to people with specific needs, through our Second Mile Giving – our financial gifts beyond our regular offerings. The Karagwe Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania is the companion synod to our Northwestern PA Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The ELCA received word from the Karagwe Diocese that the school fees at the Bweranyange Girl’s Secondary School have been increased to $800.00 per student, per year. Our Synod congregations have committed to 10 scholarships per year. The money is sent via bank-to-bank wire transfer in January. The school motto “it takes a woman to raise a nation” guides the school. In total there are 316 girls taught by 15 teachers in the general subjects of Biology, Chemistry, Civics, the English language, Geography, History, Kiswahilli, Mathematics, and Physics. Twelve staff members belong to the non-teaching staff and care about the administration and catering of the boarding school. Since the start of the school in 2007, the number of students have increased every year. The good results of the students at national exams are the best advertisement for the school. Second Mile envelopes can be found in the pew racks, or you may mail your contribution to the church office in an envelope clearly marked, “Second Mile Giving.” All Second Mile contributions received during the month of June will be given to the designated cause. 7 8 Financial Update - Year-To-Date as of April 2017 Envelope – Planned and Unplanned Giving Budget $ 100,661 Received $ 94,905 Deficit $ (5,756) Budget Disbursed Surplus Spending $ 130,912 $ 120,613 $ 10,300 Congregational Growth Fund 2017 Budget $ 21,000 Received $ 4,023 % Annual Goal 19.16% Loan Payment 2017 Budget $ 10,000 Received $ 1,825 % Annual Goal 18.25% You are invited to direct questions to the Treasurer, John Weaver at 724.699.3231, or either of the Co- Chairs of the Finance Committee, Bob Massing at 724.253.2932 or Barbara Swartz at 724.651.5496.
