Information for patients and visitors Introduction The aim of this leaflet is to provide families and carers with information regarding the role of the Hospital Play Specialist. Benefits Play is an important part of any child’s development Play in hospital provides children with fun, speeds up recovery, gives support and distraction from procedures and the hospital environment Play can be a good way to help children and young people understand their illness and treatments Play helps to create an environment where stress and anxiety are reduced Play helps a child or young person regain their confidence and self-esteem A HPS can be of benefit to any department within a hospital that deals with children and young people, these may include: Children's Ward (0-16 years) Outpatients Department Emergency Care Centre (ECC), DPoW or Emergency Centre, SGH Radiography Department (X-ray, ultrasound, C.T, M.R.I) Child Development Centre (CDC) Paediatric Assessment and Observation Unit Caring for sick children and young people in the community What is the Role of the Hospital Play Specialist? A HPS has many roles these can include: Play provides an outlet for feelings and emotions Organising daily play and activities both in the playroom and at the bedside Play can aid assessment and diagnosis of a child or young person Providing play to achieve developmental goals Helping children master and cope with their anxieties and feelings Using play to prepare children for hospital procedures Supporting families and siblings Contributing to clinical judgements through play based observations Teaching the value of play for sick children and young people Encouraging peer group friendships to develop Organising parties and special events Risks There are no known risks. A Hospital Play Specialist (HPS) is someone who has qualified as a nursery nurse and has then completed a specialized qualification to become a HPS. Information will only ever be shared with people who have a genuine need for it (e.g. your GP or other professionals from whom you have been receiving care) or if the law requires it, for example, to notify a birth. Please be assured however that anyone who receives information from us is also under a legal duty to keep it confidential. Zero Tolerance - Violent, Threatening and Abusive Behaviour If you have any concerns / queries about any of the services offered by the Trust, in the first instance, please speak to the person providing your care. Moving & Handling The Trust operates a Minimal Lifting Policy, which in essence means patients are only ever lifted by nursing staff in an emergency situation. Patients are always encouraged to help themselves as much as possible when mobilising, and if unable to do so, equipment may be used to assist in their safe transfer. If you have any questions regarding moving and handling of patients within the Trust, please speak to a member of staff in the ward or department you are visiting.
