Latest News:
Our SCIENCE LIVE evening held last Thursday was
amazing! More photos on page 7.
From the Principal
Tena Koutou
MID YEAR CONCERT – The mid-year concerts were held in the school hall
last evening. This was an opportunity for our various cultural groups to
perform before an audience and for parents to see the progress of these
groups and to be entertained. And entertaining it was – I congratulate all
of the groups on their performances and also congratulate students on
the wonderful artwork that was displayed in the hall. I thank the Arts
Committee and the entire staff team for their work in preparation. A wonderful evening – thanks to
all involved.
STAFF CHANGES – Sadly (for us anyway), Kowhai Team Co-Leader Sandra Thurlow will be finishing
tomorrow as she is relocating to Tauranga. Sandra was ‘roped in’ off the tennis courts to teach a
Year 2 class at the school in 2002 when Jenny Lynds took ill and she has been with us ever since.
Page 2
From the Principal continued……..
Sandra has gone on to co-lead Kowhai Syndicate and she has provided leadership across the
school in mathematics, literacy and in the library. Her effective teaching, pragmatic efficiency
and fun loving approach will be sorely missed. We wish Sandra and Brian all the very best with
their new life in Tauranga. Shelley Holmes will teach Room 8 students for the remainder of the year
and Kate Excell will continue to lead Kowhai Syndicate with the assistance of deputies Kristen
Finlayson and Kirstin Toleman.
Lisa Cowley has been teaching in Room 6 this term while Julie Knapp has been on leave. I thank
Lisa for her excellent work and she will return around the middle of next term to start an additional
New Entrant class.
INFORMATION SHARING/REVIEWING INTERVIEWS - Information Sharing/Reviewing Interviews will be
held on the afternoons/evenings of Thursday 4 August and Thursday 11 August. (Weeks 2 & 3 next
term). Mid-Year National Standards Reports will be shared at the interviews. Bookings for the
interviews will open on the first day of Term 3.
END OF TERM – The final full school assembly for the term will be held tomorrow morning. School will
end for the term at the usual time tomorrow and Term 3 will commence on Monday 25 July. Like
all school terms, this one has proved to be very busy with so much going on including cross
country competitions, the introduction of the A.L.L. project, our Science Live focus, Kapiti Island
visits (Hongoeka Synd.), B.o.T. elections, the mid-year concert and a Taupo Syndicate social to be
held tonight - along with all the ‘business as usual’ stuff. I congratulate all students on their work
and progress and thank the staff team for their commitment and dedication. Wishing all a safe
and restful holiday.

HEALTHY KIDS CORNER
HEALTHY KIDS AND HOMEMADE BREAD
Everyone has taken part in Science this term. A fun holiday activity is making fresh homemade
bread. It is so delicious and much healthier than commercially made bread. Homemade
bread has no additives and is a healthy choice for Healthy Kids.
Homemade Bread Recipe
Pre-ferment
85g water
½ teaspoon dried yeast
50g wholemeal flour
50g flour
Final Dough
180g water
2 teaspoons oil
2 teaspoons honey
100g wholemeal flour
200g white flour
Step One
Mix all the ‘pre-ferment’ ingredients together in a bowl, cover and leave for a few hours (or
overnight).
Step Two
Mix all the ‘final dough’ ingredients together and add to the ‘pre-ferment’. Knead the dough by
hand then leave to rise until it is two-three times its size (about two hours).
Step Three
Tip the dough onto a lightly floured bench top. Flatten into a rectangle then fold into thirds.
Flatten and roll the dough to form a log. Place in a greased or lined tin. Cover the bread again
and leave to rise until it has doubled in size (about 45 minutes to 1 hour).
Step Four
Preheat the oven to 200C and bake for 10 minutes then turn the oven down to 180C and bake
for a further 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and tip the loaf onto a cooling rack. Allow to
cool before slicing.
Variations:
Try adding:
sundried tomatoes
cheese and spinach topped
dried fruit

SPORTS NEWS
REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY
Plimmerton School entered 26 runners in the
Regional Cross Country event on July 5th. We
had a series of quality performances, all of
which can be seen here - results. I observed
two special features from our athletes:
comradery and courage. Our support of each
other was first class and our courage to
continue running at top speed when our
bodies were telling us otherwise was obvious to
see. Thank you to the parents and staff that
supported on the day, another lovely
Plimmerton event.
