Literature 1-31f—Simile Poems Abstract Noun Poem Choose an abstract noun (love, fear, excitement, anger, misery, sleepiness, anticipation, interested, bored, faith, hope, charity, peace, etc.) Write a poem about that feeling using the following formula. Line 1: Line 2: Line 3: Line 4: Line 5: Line 6: Write the word Looks like . . . Feels like . . . Sounds like. . . Tastes like . . . Smells like . . . Finish lines 2 through 6 with comparisons that describe or define the feeling word. Then cross out the words “looks like,” “feels like,” “tastes like,” and “smells like.” Recopy. Variation: Make the first word (on line 1) a holiday. Follow the same process for lines 2-6. I Am Like Write according to the following pattern: I am like (some animal) because . . . I am like (some plant) because . . . I am like (some inanimate object) because . . . Cross out the words “like” and “because” and rewrite your exercise as a poem. You may want to write three poems, one for each simile, or a long poem about yourself. © 2012 American Heritage Schools, Inc. All rights reserved.
