Castle Tidings Newsletter Castle Golf Club August/September 2015 Welcome to the August/September issue of Castle Tidings. Dear Members With Autumn upon us we leave behind a wonderful Summer of golf on what is undoubtedly one the of the best Parkland courses in Ireland. Our warmest congratulations to our Lady Golfer of the Year Suzanne Elliott with the Men's Golfer of the Year to be announced at The Captains Dinner and to the various winners of the Club Matchplay Finals. On the team front the last few weeks have been very exciting with a wonderful haul of 5 Pennants. Our Ladies had a fantastic win to retain the Bloom Trophy after a thrilling and exhausting Sunday afternoon in Castle. The Ladies Senior Foursomes are the AIG All Ireland Champions having beaten Mallow in the AIG Ladies Cups and Shields National Finals on Friday 25th September in Knightsbrook. On the men's front there was success in the Straffan Cup in a rain sodden K Club while warm sunshine rained down on Clontarf as Castle won the Barton Cup for the first time since 1941. We offer a warm thanks to the players, managers and supporters of all teamsnot just the victors - who represented the Club this year. There was a very busy social calendar over the past few months and the highlight was a memorable evening to mark Club Professional David Kinsella's 50 years with the club. Happy Golfing, Captain Derry & Lady Captain Margaret. Captain's (Derry Byrne) Prize Week It was certainly a Captain's week to remember when Captain Derry launched proceedings with the Valley Cup on the Thursday. It only took young Adam McEvoy 11 shots to complete the course and grab the first Silver of the week. Thursday also saw the big day for the Good Companions. Friday morning saw the scurry of players making it to the first tee in hopeful expectation of making a good qualifying score in very pleasing weather conditions. Shane Taggart (9) - 39pts with Brian O'Meara (21) - 37 Pts and Noel Hughes (18) - 37 Pts, set the pace as 38% of the field achieved 30 pts or better. There were 19 two's including an eagle from Greg Dilger on the 12 th. Day 2 of the qualifying had to wait until Sunday due to the Barton Cup final first leg and players were treated to a day of wet conditions. However this poor weather did not deter the keen competitors with many great scores being achieved. Jim Mulready (0) with a gross 66 and 40 points had Harry Gleeson and Peadar Walsh in Ladbrokes corner making frantic calls to Paddy Power to see if they could complete a merger before pay out day. Richard Sheehan (7) - 39 Points, Brian Kane Jnr (7) - 38 points and Barry Keely (18) - 38 points were his closest rivals while a host of players rested on 37 points including Ross Kinsella (4), Colm Gleeson (16), Dermot O'Dwyer (22), Nigel Lynch (7) and John Barron (9). Jim Mulready topped his great round off with a hole in one on the 3 rd. A week of sleepless night's lay ahead for the anxious Top 30. Captain Derry with Lady Captain Margaret, Vice-Captain Paul and David Kinsella enjoying some champagne during Captain's week. On Monday the club hosted an Open Senior's event with EJ Bourke (11) coming through victorious. Our Club President, Ronan Murphy finished second with 39 points. Captain Derry was not going to be out done during his week finishing with a great score of 37 points. On Tuesday, the ladies gathered in their numbers to compete for the Captain's prize and in the final furlong it took the last six holes to separate the winners with Suzanne Elliot winning from Sarah Harkin with both achieving 41 Points. Wednesday saw the club hosting the open invitation and it was hugely successful with 184 competitors taking part. The team consisting of Cathal O'Leary, Mark Keating, Cormac Egan and Paul Hennessy proved too strong for the rest of the field. The course was in marvellous condition on Saturday for the Captain's Prize final day and the top 150 golfers arrived full to the brim with enthusiasm and colour. Most scores of 27 had made the cut from the qualifying rounds when the axe finally dropped. William McAuliffe and Karl Devenney had the screen in focus for the hot scoring expected from the Top 30 with an enthusiastic bunch of juvenile members volunteering to be the message senders. Well done to all! It was nip and tuck all afternoon with various players creeping up the leader board with pars and birdies only to fall back down again as bogey's damaged the card. A truly epic performance from Jim Mulready on the day with a gross 69 and 37 points saw Jim finally take the victory parade down the 18th fairway as he won Captain Derry's prize.A great evening was had by all and as the presentation of prizes flowed it became very clear to all that Jim Mulready was a most popular winner on the day. Mother & Daughter 2015 The Mothers and Daughter Trophy is retained at Castle Golf Club The 7th All Ireland Mother & Daughter Foursomes Open competition got underway in Castle Golf Club on Monday 17th August 2015. A glorious day weather wise helped to get the shotgun started promptly. It was great to see so many familiar pairings from previous years and we were delighted to welcome all the new mothers and daughters to Castle. The weather obviously contributed to the great scores. This year we welcomed CPL, the global provider of recruitment, staffing and outsourcing services as our main sponsor. The competition is also supported by Medipharm who provided the most wonderful skin care hampers which were presented to all winners. We had over 100 competitors from 20 clubs from all over Ireland. Our lady captain, Margaret McConville gave us a wonderful quote from Oscar Wilde which reminded us of how we are shaped by our mothers: "Most women become their Mothers, that is their tragedy..... No Man does, that is his........." Castle Golf Club is also the home of the prestigious All Ireland Father and Son competition which attracts over 500 competitors and is now in its 54th year. Shane Lowry Wins WGC Bridgestone Invitational At Firestone Shane Lowry held off the challenge of three major champions to claim the biggest victory of his career in brilliant fashion at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. Shane carded a flawless final round of 66 at Firestone Country Club to finish 11 under par, two shots ahead of double Masters champion Bubba Watson, with Justin Rose and Jim Furyk another two shots back. "It's hard to believe but I played good today," Shane said after his round. "I felt quite nervous out there towards the end but made a lot of good decisions, hit the ball well and got a bit of luck as well which was nice. It's great to be able to pull something off. I was doubting myself a little this year, things haven't being going my way but when you come out the other end it's always nice. I played as good a golf as I've ever played the last four days," he added. Shane jumped to number 19 in the world after his first PGA Tour victory. Onward and Upwards for Shane! - he has no shortage of supporters in Castle Golf Club ILGU NEWS ............... TEAMS Tuesday 25 August saw a full time sheet of eager golfers playing in the last major of the year- Captain Derry's Prize to the ladies. Suzanne Elliott was victorious on the day with a great score 41 points. Suzanne, who lost 7 shots this year, went on to win Golfer of the year which was a great achievement as she had a hand injury early in the year and only got back to golf in late April. Sarah Harkin (also 41points) who was runner up on the day was also runner up in the Lady Captains prize in June. Castle Ladies Teams have had the best year in a long time in ILGU competitions. The Senior Foursomes and Junior Foursomes teams played in the East Leinster final in Blackbush on Saturday 30 August. A special word of thanks to Siobhan McCarthy overall Team Manager and coordinator, managers Avril Haughton and Claire O'Donoghue of Senior Foursomes, Anne Thornton and Therese O'Brien of Junior Foursomes for all the time and work they have put into organising the teams . Unfortunately the Junior Foursomes were narrowly beaten. Senior Foursomes The Ladies Senior Foursomes are the AIG All Ireland Champions having beaten Mallow in the AIG Ladies Cups and Shields National Final on Friday 25th September in Knightsbrook. They were successful against Roscommon in the quarter final on Wednesday and against Enniscorthy in the semi final on Thursday 24th, in all they had 3 days of superb golf. Bloom Trophy Our passage to the Bloom Trophy 2015 was nothing but nail biting and exciting. The first round against Stackstown was very good with three good wins at home and followed up with a comfortable win away. That is where the 'comfortable' ends! The next round was against Newlands and we won one match in Newlands away. On the return match we lost one match and won two coming from behind! Donna Reddy and Catriona Mooney had to go up the 19 th where Catriona Mooney had a par to win the match. On we went and met Milltown, with our first leg at home. We won the three matches in the lashings of rain and two of them on the 18th. We then went to Milltown looking for a rainless day but not to be. It was appalling weather and never stopped raining for 6 hours. We subsequently lost the three matches and had to go up the 19th. Donna Reddy and Anna Mellotte were the last match alive so off we went again. After halving the first playoff hole we headed for the second! Donna Reddy won the match with a par and a marvelous downhill 15 foot putt. We were really not letting this Trophy out of our hands easily! Elm Park for the final 1st leg and the sun shone. We came away with a half from there, a little perturbed but all to play for as we knew we could win three at home. On September the 6th, the final leg of our journey to the Bloom Trophy 2015 the sun did not shine but at least it was not raining. We won two of our matches and the last match came back from 4 down to half the match on the 18th. It was a heroic effort by Blanaid Nally and Catriona Mooney. On the 19th (again) Blanaid Nally played the hole perfectly and had a tap in to win the Trophy again. Congratulations to the whole panel who each contributed a huge amount to a great win to retain the Bloom Trophy. A special word of thanks to managers Edwina Jennings and Nicola Doyle for all their hard work which resulted in Castle retaining the Bloom Trophy for 2015. Juvenile News The juvenile members' fun day, the highlight of their season, took place on Sunday, August 30th, to coincide with O'Meara Cup and Mary Walsh Trophy competitions. The timesheet ran from early morning to accommodate the many boys and girls wishing to play, and a separate competition in the Valley for beginners and improvers. And then the fun really started in the Valley with bouncing castle, longest drive, nearest the pin, snacks and ice cream. The weather was kind and a great day was had by all. The winner of the O'Meara Cup this year was Padraig Johnson and the winner of Mary Walsh Trophy was Aoife Leavy. Also announced at the prize ceremony were golfers of the year Adam McEvoy and Roisin Caffrey. The winners of the Captain's prize to the Juveniles were also called out again - Eoghan Fitzpatrick and Ciara Leavy. The incoming Captains for 2016 are Rob Moran and Emily McCarthy were also announced. Early last month Castle girls were to the fore at the Newlands Girls Trophy event taking the top four places. Congratulations to Emily McCarthy (pictured) on being the overall winner on a score of 45 pts, runner-up Ellen Smyth on 41pts, 3rd place went to Aoife Leavy on 38 pts and 4th place to Ciara Leavy on 37 pts. Elsewhere in August Darragh Smith won the Wicklow Boys competition in Greystones GC. Darragh posted a four round total of 289 to secure the title ahead of a large field of competitors drawn mainly from Wicklow and Dublin clubs. Darragh has been selected to represent Leinster in an international boys match in the UK during September. Other noteworthy performances were Thomas Harte tied 7th in Munster Under 14 Boys plus tied 3rd in Leinster Under 13 Series and Tommy Smyth 20th in Irish Under 16 Boys. And finally, Robert Browne recently shot a course record of 61 gross in Lahinch beating his own previous record of 62! In inter-club competitions Castle is leading the Elm Park Trophy league standings in both boys and girls division; the final round of competition will take place in midSeptember. And in the Dick Walsh Trophy, Castle played Milltown in one of the semifinals but unfortunately lost; the final takes place in Castle on Sunday, September 27th. And, of course, a number of boys and girls continue to represent the Club in senior competitions e.g. Ruth Keating, Donal McAuliffe, Thomas Harte, Tommy Smyth, Jack P. Walsh, Barry Fitzpatrick to name a few. The Castle U15 boys' team was drawn away to Kilkenny GC in the Leinster final in early August. In yet another away match in their long summer campaign the team was unfortunately defeated by a strong Kilkenny team in a closely fought match. But the experience this summer will stand to them for another shot at the trophy next summer. Well done to the panel who played so well to get to the final: Jack P Walsh; Tommy Smyth (Captain), Adam McEvoy, Lee Barron, Thomas Harte, Dylan Smyth, Hugo O'Malley and James Quinn. As you all know our 'travelling pro' Shane Lowry won the Bridgestone Invitational WGC event in August. But did you know that his real fans are in Castle GC, not his home club at Esker Hills? Here he is pictured recently with some of our girls on our practice fairway. Well done, Shane, on a great 2015 so far. Keep up the good work. Respect for the golf course and its environment is an important value to encourage amongst all our members. One morning in August our course superintendent Paul Fitzgerald kindly offered to show juveniles how the course is maintained at such a high standard and demonstrated how they could do their bit to help. The session was great fun for all who attended. David Kinsella's Golf Day & Par Tee...... David's day started early in the morning with Champagne, Strawberries & Cream. The sun shone down on the day as the golf began and then shone again on the winners Sarah Halpin, Michael Neary, Fiona Norris and Leo Norris who had a fantastic score of 94 points. Then it was time to "Par-Tee", the hair was done and the finery was adorned (and that was just the men) all to celebrate one mans achievement of 50 years at Castle, the one and the only David Kinsella!! The night then began in earnest when, after a sumptuous meal the Par Tee really got going and what started early on Saturday morning finished very early on Sunday morning! Message of thanks from David Kinsella We would like to thank most sincerely everyone who took part in the day of golf and night of celebration on 12th September and also to those who could not attend but sent their best wishes. Many people were involved in the planning and preparation of the day to whom we are most grateful. Everyone entered into the spirit of the occasion and made it night that our family will never forget. Thank you, once again, for your support and kindness on this occasion and over the past fifty years. Rules, Rules, Rules !!!!! 1 In an 18 hole Stableford competition a player omitted the last four holes of the round and returned a score for 14 holes; he should be disqualified. False 2 A dropped ball must be re-dropped if it is deflected by the tee peg used to mark the extent of an area in which the ball is to be dropped. False 3 A player may mop up casual water on his line of putt. False 4 A player may stand out of bounds to play a ball within bounds. True 5 During a stroke play competition a player swings at but misses a wrong ball. He incurs a one stroke penalty. * False 6 A player is permitted to mark the position of his ball by placing the toe of his club behind the ball. True 7 In match play, the penalty for dropping a ball in an incorrect manner is loss of hole.* False 8 In a foursomes match, if a player plays when it was her partners turn to play her side lose the hole. True 9 A player whose ball is lost may return to the tee to play a provisional ball.* False 10 A player may only repair a pitch mark if her ball lies on the green. False Question 5. It is a two stroke penalty! The fact that the player missed the ball is irrelevant. He still made a stroke at a wrong ball. Question 7. It is a one stroke penalty not loss of hole. Question 9. Once the ball is lost and the player returns to the tee , that new ball is now the ball in play ,not a provisional ball. Happy Golfing Anne. ILGU Rules Official..
