STUDENT COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP
2016
Rotarians around the world live by the motto “Service Above Self” and demonstrate this through
their organization and participation in many local, country and worldwide community service
projects. As one of its community service projects, the Rotary Club of Ocala Silver Springs is
pleased to announce the availability of scholarship support for students who are classified as
seniors for the current academic year. For the purposes of this scholarship, community service
may be defined as services that one performs for the betterment of mankind. Given this
definition write a 500 to 600 word essay of what “Service Above Self” means to you. Be sure to
include in your essay your most memorable service project including but not limited to local
community projects or those projects that were designed to aid people in other countries.
Scholarship recipients are selected on an objective and competitive basis.
SECTION 1 - SCHOLARSHIP writing requirements:
Please include all of the following topics in order:
1. Write a brief one page autobiographical sketch of yourself including:
a.
Notes about yourself, (highlight important aspects of your life)
b.
Your educational accomplishments,
c.
Your non-academic interests (sports, music, dance, clubs, etc),
d.
Your career goal(s).
e.
Your choice of college or university.
f.

SECTION 2 - SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES:
Applicants must:
-
Be a residents of Marion County,
-
Have been enrolled in either a public or private high school in Marion County
for one academic year immediately preceding their graduation,
-
Have maintained a grade point average of “B” or better (3.0 or above on a 4
point scale) through their junior and senior year to date,
-
Provide evidence that they have been accepted for enrollment (or pre
acceptance) at an accredited college, university, junior college or technical
school,
-
Provide a one page typed autobiographic sketch as outlined above,
-
Provide at minimum a 500-600 word essay (as outlined above) that describes
what “Service Above Self” means to you, (700 maximum word count)
-
Provide a sealed official transcript of high school grades,
-
Be prepared to talk about your essay to a panel of judges. (Dress for all
interviews to be “Smart Casual”)

If chosen as a recipient of this scholarship, be prepared to present your essay
to the Rotary Club at their luncheon meeting. (Dress for luncheon to be
“Smart Casual”)
SECTION 3 – PROCEDURES:

Letters of recommendation – A. Teacher, Guidance Counselor, etc.
B. Other Adult outside of school system

Documented evidence of pre-acceptance or acceptance to an accredited
college, university, junior college or technical school.
Applicants must submit one (1) copy of their official sealed cumulative transcript
of high school grades,

SECTION 6 – SCHOLARSHIP AWARD:

Four $1,000.00 dollar scholarships will be awarded,
Each scholarship winner will receive a commemorative Rotary
Certificate of Academic Achievement
Each scholarship winner will be recognized at a luncheon in their honor
at a regularly scheduled Rotary meeting held at St. Marks Methodist
Church 1839 NE 6th Ave Road, Ocala, at 12:00 Noon, April 7, 2016,
(Dress – “Smart Casual”)
