Fasting and Abstinence during Lent – Practicing as
the Church instructs is a good beginning. A bodily way to
remind ourselves that we need God above all things, fasting
is also a sacrifice, a gift back to God of our heart’s intent to
depend more completely on God. The interior free desire to
deepen our relationship to God is the essence of a Lenten fast.
*Q: What are the rules about fasting and abstinence?
A: Good Friday is a day of fasting and abstinence.
The law of fasting allows one full meal and two smaller ones.
The law of abstinence prohibits the eating of meat.
Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United
States. The obligation of abstinence begins at age 14. The
law of fasting obliges all between the ages of 18-59.
Graduation Mass & Celebration – Our graduate dinner

Mass at 5:00pm (please be there in your cap and gown at
4:30pm) and a dinner following in the Family Life Center. All
St. Stephen High School Seniors and their families are invited
to attend. We will be celebrating your graduation as we come
together for Mass, food & fellowship. We will also be awarding
the parish scholarships at this event! Please contact Jessica to
RSVP a table for your family by April 28!
LifeTeen News – Thank you to all the hard working teens
who participated in Living Stations of the Cross and made it
so successful! Lexie Shephard, Bessie Sullivan, Maggie Clark,
Jackson Bray, Kender Carroll, Rhys LaChance, Jon Coppick,
Andres Alvarado, Christian Rosales, Artur Kucharewicz,
Aaliyah Garcia, Julianne Rabal, Nicholas LaChance, Adalia
Chavez, Parker Evans, Audrey Dooley, Chase Richard, Mary
Claire Clark, Maeve Penman, Anna Bannister, Emmalee
Evans, Kennedy Ray. We would also like to thank our
costume designers, April Appleby and Karen Coppick.
No LifeTeen next week, April 16 for Easter, we will
have our final Life Night of the year on April 23 at 6:00pm!
Bible Study still happens every Wednesday from 6:308:00pm in the Bosco House.
St. Stephen Benevolent Conference (SSBC) – Today is
Palm Sunday and the beginning of the holiest of Christian
weeks. Let us pray for the grace to take up our cross and
follow Jesus through death to new life. Please support the
SSBC so that together we can help the poor as they carry
their cross of suffering and pain.
Take a Phone and Television Fast – The Diocese of
Little Rock is inviting people to “fast” by turning off their cell
phones and televisions on Good Friday, April 14. Silencing
our phones and televisions for all or part of these Holy Days
will give God a chance to call our hearts, especially if we
couple this with at least an hour spent in silent prayer while
disconnected from the media. Please consider including this
practice in addition to almsgiving, prayer & fasting from
food, which are traditional disciplines the Church observes
during Lent. Since all of these practices involve sacrifice, it
would be beneficial to offer the spiritual fruits of that
sacrifice for some specific cause -- thus giving meaning to the
suffering involved and producing greater spiritual benefit.
The Diocese of Little Rock recommends offering up the
sacrifices of Good Friday for those who are marginalized and
neglected, reflecting on Jesus' parable of the Last Judgment
in Mt. 25:31-46.
The Events of Holy Week:
Holy Week includes the days from Palm Sunday
through Easter.
Palm or Passion Sunday has contrasting names,
one because of Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem (to
the waving palm branches), and the other because this
Sunday begins our focus on Jesus’ days of suffering and
death.
Paschal Triduum, from the Latin for “three days,”
extends from evening Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday.
Maundy (Holy) Thursday gets its name from
Jesus’ “new commandment” (maundatum in Latin) to love
one another, which he spoke during the Passover meal when
he washed his disciples’ feet and instituted the Holy
Eucharist. Typically the Catholic Church now refers to this
day as Holy Thursday.
Good Friday marks the events of Jesus’ trial,
crucifixion, death and burial, sometimes with special Tre Ore
(three hour) observances. The altar is stripped of all
decoration and the church is darkened until Saturday’s
Easter Vigil.
Easter Vigil is celebrated on Holy Saturday
evening after sundown; traditionally a time for baptizing,
confirming, and receiving new members.
Easter, named after an ancient spring festival, is the
“great Sunday,” on which each Sunday Eucharist is modeled.

April is “National Child Abuse Prevention Month,”
which is dedicated to raising awareness of and preventing
child abuse; whether sexual, physical, or emotional. Along
with other educational efforts, please plan to attend our first
annual “Safe Environment Healing Mass,” celebrated by
Bishop Anthony Taylor, with a reception following:
*When: Thursday, April 20, at 6:00pm
*Where: St. John Catholic Center in Little Rock (Morris Hall)
*What: Safe Environment Healing Mass, offered for the
healing of all victims of child abuse and those
impacted by it, with a reception to follow.
Divine Mercy Sunday, April 23 – St. Stephen will
celebrate the Feast of Mercy beginning at 3:00pm (the Hour
of Great Mercy) in the Church. The celebration will last at
least 45 minutes. It will consist of the acknowledgment of this
Feast with reflections about St. Faustina, the Mercy Stations,
and the Chaplet of ther Divine Mercy. All are invited.
Novena to The Divine Mercy – On Good Friday,
1937, Jesus requested that St. Faustina Kowalska, make a
special novena before the Feast of Mercy, from Good Friday
through the following Saturday. He, Himself, dictated the
intentions for each day. By means of a specific prayer she was
to bring to His heart a different group of souls each day and
thus immerse them in the ocean of His mercy, begging the
Father–on the strength of Jesus’ Passion–for graces for them.
(Diary 1209)
This novena will be conducted here at St. Stephen
Church on the nine days requested by Jesus–starting Good
Friday, April 14 through the following Saturday, April 22. The
novena will be held each night in the Chapel at 6:30pm or
immediately following services if any are being held.
Say yes to Life – “Let’s say ‘yes’ to life and ‘no’ to death”
(Pope Francis, January 19, 2014). Catholics believe in the
sanctity of life from conception to natural death. Starting
Easter Monday eight men are scheduled to be executed by
the State of Arkansas. All Catholics are asked to join Bishop
Anthony B. Taylor in doing the following:
- Pray for the victims of the crimes committed by
these men and for the healing of their family and friends. We
cannot know fully the pain their loved ones will feel the rest
of their lives. May they experience the overwhelming mercy
of our God. - Contact Gov. Asa Hutchinson before April 14
at governor.arkansas.gov/contact-info or (501)682-2345
asking him to commute the sentences of these men to life
without parole: Don Davis and Bruce Earl Ward (scheduled
to be executed April 17), Ledelle Lee and Stacey Johnson
(scheduled to be executed April 20), Marcel Williams and
Jack Jones, Jr. (scheduled to be executed April 24), Jason
McGehee and Kenneth Williams (scheduled to be executed
April 27). - Pray to end the death penalty that diminishes
all of us and is not needed to protect society in our country.
The Sisters of St. Scholastica Monastery are holding a
"Novena for Clemency" April 9-17 for eight Arkansan death
row prisoners who will be executed between April 17 and 27.
Please join them as they pray outdoors at the monastery
cemetery each day at 3:00pm. For information, or a copy of
the novena prayer, please call (479)783-4147.
Good Friday Collection – Pope Francis has asked our
parish to support Christians in the Holy Land by returning
your gift in the envelopes provided. Your support means, our
church will provide Catholic education, feed the hungry, build
housing for Christians, maintain shrines and operate refugee
centers in the Holy Land. Like Simon of Cyrene, you can help
carry the cross under very difficult circumstances in the Holy
Land. For information visit myfranciscan.org/good-friday.
